Hey guys,

My wait was finally over today and my 6mt came today.
I went to pick it up but before paying for it I test drove it.
Here is what I noticed:
When I put it in 1st gear or reverse as I was letting go of the clutch
The car makes a weired sound that then goes away.
It's hard to describe but it's almost like a V8 engine when you accelerate.
The sales guy said this was normal and said that it's just the clutch being released. What do you guys think?
I want to make sure that it's all normal before I pay for it.

Thanks
TXvw.

Sorry, but I am a lowly DSG owner so cannot respond since I was excluded, even though I might know something about this. :)

Hey newbie, no reason to really limit your request so specifically. Just giving you a hard time for the faux pas of the forum.

Noise

I've got about 6k on my 6m tdi and nothing unusual from the driveline......the whole clutch release is so much smoother than the 2011 golf it replaced. Have you looked at a short shift kit yet?

There probably aren't many (any?) or 6MT 2012 Passats in your area, but I would sure find out. The only way you'll solve this question is with a side-by-side comparison. Even then, some cars make noises that identical cars don't.

For instance, my TDI SEL, at 11.5k miles, has a mild turbo whine/whistle that seems to be benign, although no other similar cars make the sound. It's been VWoA documented, but until it gets worse, there's not a whole lot I can do about it...except continue to whine as well!!

Mine does require a decent amount of accelerator input to get rolling without stalling. Do you notice the RPM dropping below 800 when you ease off the clutch? If so, that sound could be the engine trying not to stall.

I am the dealer again. He'll give me a manual Tdi Jetta
To drive and compare the noise. He thinks it's normal.
The other think I asked him is for a tech to drive it with me
Before I buy it.

It's a new car, parts need to mate and wear in together.

Drive it a bit more, and worry less. My MT6 makes a whine in 3rd gear under slight load on flat ground, from 18 -29 MPH. Do I worry about it? Maybe before 36k miles are on it.

I seriously doubt the car has a problem, but if it does, that's what warranties are for.

What the hell does a V8 sound like? We are talking about a clutch and 1st as well as reverse gears, which is gearbox related, not motor related.

See if the sound goes away if you let the clutch out a little faster. It hardly takes any throttle if at all on mine to get rolling, clutch is fully out, then I give mine throttle on flat ground in 1st gear. Don't slip that clutch. Get it fully engaged then add throttle. It's a diesel, it will do it just fine.

It would be helpful if you could better describe the "weird sound". The only V8 sound I can think of is the rush of air on acceleration on old serpentine driven cooling fans.

Could it be turbo whistle/whine you're hearing?

No sound issues from mine inline driveline.

Finally home and a proud owner of a Passat TDI.
The tech drove the 6mt with me and was surprised to hear the sound I heard.
He said they can take a look at it but for me I didn't want to start with service issues from Day 1.
The dealer had a TDI SE black on black with navi and sunroof. He had ordered it with the spoiler, mats did the tint and had it for an MSRP of 31000K
I negotiated 1K down from that and I was a happy camper.

Now the fun bigins. Where would you guys suggest I get a VCDS? How much are they?

Regards,
TXvw

Well, this is what a diesel V8 sounds like (and a good one at that):

Sorry, I just had to! I absolutely LOVE that sound BTW!:D

Back to the point, I think it would be very useful if the OP would go record a good clip of the sound this car is making and then let the people here listen to it. That would probably give the wise people here the best chance at giving an accurate diagnosis.

Also, as mentioned above, sometimes a certain car will just make a harmless sound that most others don't, but that doesn't mean something is wrong with it. Hell, it just gives it some personality!

That said, it is good to be paying attention to details and avoiding issues, but to a point it is just better to "Drive more, worry less!"

I'm glad the OP was able to negotiate with the dealer. Now I, too, am wondering what the sound was all about.

I agree with, "sometimes a certain car will just make a harmless sound that most others don't, but that doesn't mean something is wrong with it. Hell, it just gives it some personality!"

However: (thread drift) My car's "personality" (turbo whine/whistle) is starting to annoy me to the point that I'm going to have the dealer request the regional VWoA Rep. listen to it the next time he's in the area. I'm not sure it will accomplish much, but at least it will continue to be documented. Is it louder, or am I just paranoid? Probably both.

This I find interesting.... I'd take it to your "practically neighbors" for a professional TDI opinion, as both of them are TDI gurus and have owned or driven in almost every VW TDI model known, and know what a healthy or dying turbo sounds like.
I'm a bit hard of hearing, have no problem hearing the turbo whine on my 2002 jetta tdi reflecting off a slumpstone wall, window up or down, but I run no belly pan currently, with sound dampening. My passat is an exception, I don't think I've ever heard the turbo whine on it before in 4500 miles. I know it's in there, but I haven't heard it yet. YMMV...

Is the car cold when you are doing this? I have noticed that my car make a lot more noise when its cold (a noise they assured me at the dealership is totally normal).
It could just be that. I certainly dont notice any driveline noise when moving in reverse.

We've already heard it and ridden in it. Not really sure what to make of the sound. It definitely makes much different noises than our Passat's turbo.

I'd like to get the car on a lift or at least on ramps and have a look around. It could be an air leak on the suction side - definitely doesn't sound like a boost leak.

TXvw, I have a 2012 Golf 6MT and we may be experiencing the same noise. It only happens in 1st and R, when engaging the clutch from a stop. It is kind of a low frequency rubbing/rumble sound. No vibration. It has always made this noise from day 1, and now I have 1100 miles on it. It makes the noise weather it is warm or cold. It seems to be worse when starting from a stop on an incline, and not as bad when starting on a decline.

It may just be the normal sound of the Dual Mass Flywheel, mated with the rough diesel engine. I test drove a manual 2012 GTI, and didn't notice the sound. The GTI has a DMF as well, but it is a much smoother engine, which may explain the lack of the sound.

I am trying to locate another manual TDI to test drive to confirm. I have searched for hours on this, and I believe it is the DMF that is making the noise, and that there is a decent change it is normal. My friend who had a MK4 TDI with a DMF said he had a similar sound on his car when doing the same thing, and that when he swapped the DMF out for a SMF, it went away.

I won't be satisfied though until I drive another manual TDI and confirm the noise for myself. I have a feeling tough that people that are saying they don't hear the noise, may be because they just aren't sensitive enough to notice it. Anyways, please let me know what you find if you test drive another manual TDI. Congrats on your new car!

Here is the thread I started trying to verify if this noise is normal or not, let me know if it sounds familiar:

Also, FYI, the clutch is considered a "Wear Item" and is only warrantied for 12kmi, so make sure you get it in before that if it really is an issue.

humm sounds a lot like what I heard. the noice does go away after the car takes off. Although I am sure thsi would be a warranty issue if comes down to it but I preferred not to mess with it from day 1.
Driving that manual was a kick in adrenaline for me :) simply put. AWESOME.

The DSG didn't do that noise so I went with it. Very impressed by how fast it shifts.

I've noticed that my boss's '11 Golf TDI makes this noise, too. It has 24,000 miles on it. I think it's normal.
