Hey everyone. First time poster, but I've been reading the forum for a couple of days now. We're about to purchase a 2011 Jetta TDI with Nav, and I had a quick question that I was hoping someone could answer.

I've read both sides of the arguments on whether the changes made to the Jetta model have been good or not, specifically the rear suspension and the steering system, the latter of which being changed from electrical to hydrolic. But when I look at the specs from VW's website, it says the TDI model has the "electro-mechanical" steering system. I pulled up the specs for the S model, and that one is marked as hydrolic. I didn't pull up the SE or SEL models, but it looks like the TDI at least has the better steering system.

I've been unable to find the answer to this anywhere online.

Can anyone confirm or deny that this is true?

Thanks!

TDI has the Electric steering. It is not an S model, but a TDI model. The steering works great! (on all TDIs since 2005.5 Jettas MKV)

Thanks for the info.

I know the TDI is not the same as the S model(s), but most of the negative complaints about the new Jetta seem to group all of them together, without stipulating that certain trim lines have the better equipment.

It seems like most of the people complaining about the new Jetta don't actually own one, but most of the owners are either very happy, or at leased pleased with it.

I was concerned about the suspension in the new Jetta, but honestly it was more due to reading the negative reviews. When I test drove the car I really couldn't tell the difference.

My main complain is the lack of a full MFD and nicer display for the driver. But mehh, really not a huge deal

Yeah the MFD is a bit small. I would prefer to have it show at least two items at the same time (outside temp and MPG for example).

I also wasn't too happy with the cruise control configuration on the turn signal. While I didn't actually test using it, it looked like it would be awkward to use. Same with the MFD controller. My wife has a 2008 Jetta and I really liked the cruise control stick that it came with and was independent from everything else. I would have preferred if they kept it that way.

So overall, does the TDI trimline (which apparently comes with the better steering system) make up for the majority of the complaints with this years Jetta? I opted for the Nav package, not as much for the Navigation system itself, but for the options it came with (foglights, etc.). The dealer didn't have any in stock, so I wasn't able to see the supposedly enhanced interior design. I was a bit upset that there weren't more options too.

Is anyone concerned about the reported problems with the fuel pump breaking and causing $10-12k in damage to the engine? Is the 2011 Jetta TDI affected by this? It looks like most of the problems are from the earlier models, and I hope they were fixed by now. I guess VW is claiming it's due to bad fuel, so I am wondering where I should buy it. With my gas cars I never really thought about where to get fuel. I would try and stay away from shady/dirty looking places, but would simply go to the nearest/cheapest place I could find (generally Race Trac). Is there a recommended place to go for diesel, or places not to go?

Ok, now I am even more confused. As I mentioned above, according to VW's website, when you're building a Jetta and select the TDI model, and go to the Summary tab and then technical details, it says the steering is electro-mechanical. The other models all show hydraulic on this page. But I was just browsing on their website and came upon this:

http://www.vw.com/en/models/jetta/features_and_specs.s10_trimlevel_comparison.suffix.html/2011_jetta~2Ftdi/model_0=6-speed_manual_transmission/model_1=5-speed_manual_transmission/model_2=5-speed_manual_transmission/tab=techdata/trimlevel_1=2011_jetta~2Fsel/trimlevel_2=2011_jetta~2Fse.html#/tab=ea070ea73b0c0f5bc1d6b897077cb7b1|trimlevel=4794ce36d670163bd0cfe259234a09ab

and all models (S, SE, SEL, TDI) show up as "hydraulic", not electro-mechanical. Looks like they are giving out contradicting information :(.
