So I'm getting codes P1561 and P1562, I pulled the cover off my IP and tried seeing if it would do the sweep. I only came to realize that it was like spaz sweeping. It moved back and forth numerous times before stopping. The QA is not gummed up it looks really clean, the car stutters between rpms 10-20, and the car has shut off a couple times when driving, oh and also my glow plug light is flashing. All the wires look good, I'm a new vw owner and I'm just stumped because I just don't know whats the problem?

PS: Car reads 3.2-3.4 mg/str

So he has a 2002 Jetta which has been sitting for a number of years, he just recently put it on the road. He has put at least one tank of fresh diesel in it , changed the fuel filter checked the fuel tank, it’s clean, and sending unit, also clean. The car is an auto.

He does have vcds and ran a complete scan, the following engine codes showed 17969, 17970, 17978, 16786, 18057.

Also vcds will not connect to the brake module. I had him check fuse #9 and even swap it with no luck. He does have the abs light on. I’m 5 hours away so I’m not where I can actually see what going on. I told him he needed to check with you guys I’m likely missing something obvious.

For the QA codes, I would follow the guidance in the link I posted, starting with checking QA resistance. Logging it might also provide some insight.

Unfortunately the ABS controller is probably dead since the fuse has been checked but it's not communicating with VCDS or the ECU. BTDT.

I told @Tdijarhead I would keep him up to date, and I mentioned it in the mk4 thread, but I would officially say I cured my P1562 QA issues. I wanted to pass along that I have not had any issues in months, in the conditions that caused it most often too, and no more car dying while driving. My conditions were identical to you. It was essentially just the "cage mod" (done to the MAF connector) but for the IP harness, with a healthy amount of sensor kleen in the connectors first. If you are still having that particular issue, I would try it, as it is essentially free. I will also update my other thread about it.

So I did this the other day and the clicking stopped in the pump, I still have codes p1562 for upper limit. I went ahead and advanced the timing and it was about 70 on the graph. Car runs fine doesn’t stutter but the glow plug light is still flashing with CEL. I tried tk clear the codes on VCDS and the code goes away but then comes right back. Not sure what I’m running into, if anyone has anything else please respond. I have a new pump, injectors, wiring is good, glow plug relay, new glow plug harness, glow plugs, and I have ran hotshot diesel additive through it.

Check the wiring to the pump as far back as you can Gabe, that car has been sitting for quite a while, and could very well have had some of your moms favorite house guests move in. Sounds like you’re making solid progress.

Should I take the ecm out and investigate all around it? I have checked the wiring all the way back until it goes up into the where the windshield wipers are.

That plastic rain tray comes off, but do yourself a favor and get a small windshield wiper puller if you don’t have one. If you try and pry the wiper blades off you will crack the windshield. That wiper area is the most likely place to find a mouse condominium.

Here’s a list for the flashing glow plug light.

Has there been any progress since then? My girls car is an 02 ALH with an 01M and I’ve got the same code. Been great for 2 years, daily driven. Changed the fuel filter a week prior to this code coming up.

FYI, I had a QA issue that turned out to be a broken wire to the pump underneath where the wipers are. Unfortunately I went so far as to swap in a QA from another pump (which didn't fix anything) before I discovered the broken wire.

Im still trying to figure it out, im looking to see if it could be the crankshaft sensor or the camshaft sensor. Because I have seen no broken wires. And I’ve replaced the pump and everything I could do try to get the code to go away. I will update you if I can get it fixed, mine was occurring before I changed the fuel filter. Mines an automatic so they may be a little different.

Anecdotal- when I had these codes I found a bad wire in the bundle near the starter under the battery. One of the wires had been scraped from the factory. Took me most of a year to diagnose. It would pass continuity but not carry sufficient amps.

Okay thank you, I will look into it this weekend when I have time to look at it!

Also an automatic, so we’re in the same boat. I’m tempted to take the top off the pump to see if it’s dirty.

Well I’ve been stumped, for right now I have tried almost everything I can. Checked the wiring, brand new pump, new injectors, new fuel filter, new glow plug relay. What I might do is see if all of my timing it right, if it is this may be an ecu problem. I hope it’s not bc I wasn’t looking forward to doing it, they rarely go bad that’s why I haven’t done it yet. First I would try and look at the top of the quantity adjuster, so like you said look at it to see if it’s dirty. Does yours make a like clicking sound whenever you turn the key on before starting?

I’ll have to listen for that noise. I just remembered she doesn’t have a CEL or airbag light on. When you turn the key on, when all lights come on, those 2 lights do not come on…

Yeah check that, cause that was like a main noise I heard everytime before I started the car. Also my car started to like surge/stutter cause of the code.
