Well now that TDIFest 2003 has come and gone (and was apparently a major success!) it's time to plan TDIFest 2004.

How does the proposal process typically work? I assume that proposed location, schedule, activites, and possible vendor/dealer/press support should be included. What's the timeframe? When should proposals be submitted?

I know those of us on the West Coast would like to see a 'fest in these here parts. Someone (gewilli?) suggested concurrent east- and west-coast fests. There are advantages and disadvantages to that idea over having a single 'fest... maybe we should discuss that too.

If the two-fest option is selected, perhaps they should be staggered... east coast in september and west coast sometime late winter/early spring. That way people could attend both, if so desired.

Of course, labeling them east-coast/west-coast excludes our midwestern bretheren.

Personally, I'm inclined to continue the single-fest with geographic rotation concept (wow, that sounds official!)

Let's get the discussion started... only a year to go until the next 'fest!!! /images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I propose a town down south, next to a racetrack so that the "rally" can still take place.

1. Birmingham- New Barber Motor Speedway... 2.5 mi.
2. Atlanta- Atlanta Motor Speedway
3. Orlando- Disney Motor Speedway
4. Ft.Worth (wherever Texas Motor Speedway is)
5. Charlotte- Lowe's Motor Speedway

Just a few thoughts...

You need to get a group together - typically 5-6 people that are committed to seeing it through.

Your proposal should contain a team members, location, proposed agenda (this will more than likely change/morph as time progresses and things are confirmed), proposed fees, sponsors for the event (can help with costs/provide prizes), non-TDI things for the other halves.

The sooner you submit the proposal, the sooner a site can be selected, the sooner you can start collecting registrations and securing the venues. I have suggestions that I would be happy to share with the winning group to help avoid some pitfalls we encountered.
Take a look at the proposal that we submitted in this thread. I can e-mail a copy if anyone wants it for ideas. I figure that if we managed to pull it off with the Iraq war, SARS and the blackout trying to stop the event, you guys will have an easy time of it! /images/graemlins/grin.gif

Yeah - if it's down south we'd better make it a time of year when us hosers in the Great White North can escape the coldness! /images/graemlins/grin.gif /images/graemlins/grin.gif
That'll help the "sell" to my wife on going to TDI Fest too!

yeah the last thing you wanna do is haul the "hosers" down south into a sauna when the weather is finally ideal and the bugs have gone where they live /images/graemlins/wink.gif

Goes for the Trolls and Uuppers here in the states too /images/graemlins/wink.gif

Lets see a simultaneous one - west coast (LA/SF/Portland/Seattle) and East coast - Mid Atlantic (RC's house /images/graemlins/laugh.gif) PA (now talk about an ideal place for a road rally - right outside metalnerd's back door) or N.E. How about maine and a few of the nice roads back near that ski place by the border! THOSE were some roads (oops probably still haven't changed much).

if you do two at the same time then we can "double" our numbers officially and then have some sort of live telepresence webcast meeting hook up (if the facilities picked can handle it).

How will we book a sattelite for that? Does anyone have a connection for that (pun intended)?

Another note, this will mean Fred has to take vacation time for both. Im not sure anyone can handle that much vacation.

What about the Colorado Area , weather is good at the end of the Summer ( Not Too hot or Too Cold ) . Maybe a ride over Trail Ridge road ( highest paved road in North America ) . And remember the speed limit in Colorado 75mph interstates ( actual 80 to 90 mph ) 65mph to 70mph two lane roads , and other states surounding it except Kansas 70mph , ( 74 actual ) are the same . Sound Like fun ??

If not here , maybe the Colgary , Alberta area of the Rocky Mountians .

Just a thought .

Why don't we all go where the money is.

IMO
I think people should start putting out feelers for a venue that will be good for a show.. and vendors in the area that are the highest bidders.I would rather drive an extra 15 hrs for a show with lots of stuff going on and lower cost...than go somewhere close and pay more to see less.

There are plenty of Cellphone companys, auto parts stores, dealerships, and other vendors that would love exposure. Especially if the media can get ahold of it. I work with a few publications in kansas city that would love to make print about a car show ( especially when it is a diesel and out of the norm)

A question.... does thiclub ever have mass road rally's?

Would be great to see a 700 mile road rally... all on 1 tank. Especially if you could put us all on I-70 or another major highway. (Route 66 would be fun too)

There would be a pretty good buzz generated ( in this time of high prices and gas guzzl'n SUV's) if there was an article about 100+ dub's on a 700 mile 1 tank stroll.

?!?

If this is the case, they it should be semi-annual IMO, instead of concurrent. It means more to have Fred at the fest, differentiates it from the garden variety GTG. If it is semi-annual, there really isn't another non-holiday-holiday long weekend to draw on, I don't think, that the Can-US have in common.

I think that would cause something of a stir, maybe even get us on the news, but man, what a boring ride.. I thought I had toughed it out last year 400 miles to Grand Rapids.. then I met GeWilli..

Mind you, wherever the next fest is, we could get a more organized convoy that would achieve the same effect without a dedicated rally event.

I just made a drive from Denver to Detroit 17 1/2 to 18 hours . If I remember 4 hours from Detroit to Toronto correct ??

24 hours to San Fransico to Denver , Denver to Charlotte , Seattle to Denver .

17 hours Denver to Los Angeles .

These are all drives I know well .

If there is anyone that wants to work with me , I'd try to find some sponsors . The Gambling Hotels in Central City , or Black Hawk Colorado might be a good place to start looking for a sponsor . I have a little experience with this kind of thing in Rocky Mountian Dart Ass. . I was on the board of directors for a few years .

I look at it this way , anything that furthers sales & popularity of TDI's I am all for that .

The NB bunch does the caravan thing from a few different areas to Roswell N.M. and from experience I can say that if you get more than a dozen cars or so it can get really unwieldy. Keeping in contact helps with FRS radios (are pretty range challenged) CBs work well too. There is the individual driving styles bugaboo too, comfort levels vary widely. All in all, I'd say caravanning can be enjoyable but it does need some planning.

I personally think regional fests would be more convenient...East, West, and Mid.

Who here has the vacation time to drive cross-country or mid-cross country? Not me.

Bouncing around some idears....I'm thinking about piggy-backing off another show...Say waterfest, H20 BBQ, etc...

It's true, long driving sucks, but it's the only way to get the people you know, and the cars you love, into the same space. Having the Fest move around the continent is supposed to ensure that a Fest comes along for everyone within reasonable distance - but it's up to members in your area to host!

There are just too many to list....
I had a lot of fun last year, but couldn't get my ducks in a row to get up to Canada this year (although Canada in late summer really does sound nice when you are in Missouri /images/graemlins/crazy.gif)

But, I don't resent it being held there...quite a few TDIers up there.

I found this site earlier this year . My hat is really off to it's founder and what he or they have done .

I'm sick a lot of the time , but if I'm able I will try to go to anywhere that it ends up being held .

There is no better libraiy of info in the world on the TDI's , all my praises to the founder & operater of this site . /images/graemlins/grin.gif /images/graemlins/grin.gif /images/graemlins/grin.gif /images/graemlins/grin.gif /images/graemlins/grin.gif /images/graemlins/grin.gif
