Don't jump at me! I read the TDI FAQ but this was not mentioned there!

I found the ventilation thingie, now how do I vent the tank when refilling?

Which one is correct?
1) Push that thing once, let go and fill up?
2) Push thing, keep pushed and while keeping pushed I refill and AFTER refilling I let go?
3) none of the above?

If method is nr.2 then which position is correct (a or b) or it doesn't matter?

Seriously though.. It doesn't matter. As long as the button is pressed, the venting is taking place. I usually put the nozzle on auto (Usually the middle click on the nozzle if it has one) and then once it stops, I hold the vent button in and then fill up from there. Once you do it a few times, you will be able to get it full enough to actually touch the fuel (Not foam).

I have found this to work (slowly):

1. Fill the tank at full blast as usual until the pump clicks off.
2. Hold the nozzle at your position "A" and dribble the fuel in as slowly as possible until you get scared of the foam.
3. Stop and count to ten.
4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 until you see liquid in the filler neck.

Does anyone have a faster way? It usually takes about 15 minutes to fill all the way because I get lots of foam - maybe the Power Service additive adds to this.

Yeah....take the black button out! Its called ventectomy!
All my cars I fill at slowest setting till they click off, then slowly fill the rest....almost 2 gallons on the A4's and 6 gallons on the Passat!

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Could you please describe the procedure?
How do I do it? Can I undo it after?
How difficult? What do I gain? (capacity)
I also have the B4 Wagon and probably identical fuel tank,, how much did you gain?
TNx!

In my experiences with fueling up with diesel fuel, I have always done it SLOWLY. Why? In my experiences with diesel, the faster I've filled up my tank, the more foam I have observed.

Due to these past observations, I've learned to fill up the tank slowly. I haven't done the vent gut extraction and I will not do it. Instead, I choose to fuel slowly and hold the pump on the vent nozzle. Besides, I love the good ol' outdoors!
