Procedure for cleaning egr cooler cjaa?

While going over the service manual I downloaded from Erwin (I just replaced my thermostat) I noticed that there was a section on cleaning the egr cooler to get rid of the “egr insufficient flow” (p0401?) code.
Looks like there is some sort of adapter that connects to the pipes on the egr cooler and then runs a cleaning solution through the cooler.

has anyone ever done this? Based on the amount of gunk I cleaned out of the egr valve on the intake, I’m guessing that the egr cooler is probably pretty dirty.

The low side EGR aka EGR Cooler never see soot unless the DPF has failed and some how got pass the EGR Filter mesh between the DPF and the cooler.

Never have I ever seen a P0401 on a CJAA that was not caused by a cracked DPF.

It's the EGR filter that is dirty, but the reason they get dirty is because the DPF is cracked.

Given that I have some soot in the exhaust, it makes sense that the dpf is having issues.

I swapped out the egr filter but that doesn’t seem to have made a difference.

compared to replacing the thermostat, how difficult is doing a dpf?

Did the output test, can hear a squeak coming from that location.

Does said "squeak" sound like it's moving throughout its range?

I think so, I just crawled under and it sounds like the same noise I hear when I move the flap by hand. Also interestingly sounds like the same squeak I hear when I apply throttle while idling. I thought I had a loose heat shield, but maybe not….

A squeak doesn't tell you anything.
Get under it, and watch it move from stop to stop as you do output tests.
If there was nothing wrong, you wouldn't be getting a code for it.

I haven’t had a chance to jack up the car yet, but it looks like it goes maybe a quarter of the way around? But it makes a pretty loud squeak. I tried idling the car and running the test and the pressure went from 10mbar to about 21mbar.
Also randomly the other day the check engine light went out and then came back on when I started the car the next time. Will report back when I have it up on the jack and can look at it more directly.
