So the new car (non-nav) is about $800 less than a similarly equipped '10 Jetta TDI and for that $800 you lose: independent rear suspension, 8-speaker stereo, and soft-touch plastics. For that approximately $800 savings, you get a torsion beam rear suspension, 6-speaker stereo, and hard plastics that look decidely "cheaper" than MkV interior plastics (per the '11 Jetta reviews that I've read). Honestly, my advice is for everyone to run to their dealer and pick up a '10 Jetta TDI. The slightly lower MSRP and elongated wheelbase aren't really incentives in my opinion because 1) I don't think the current Jetta TDI is an expensive car, and 2) I don't think that the current Jetta is "too small" in any regard. Just my $.02, which might actually be worth less anyway :p

x2 I'm glad I got mine when I did...if only I had thought to buy one in 2006 when you could still get options on it....

I wonder what the TDI New Mid-Sized Sedan will be bringing to the table?
It is supposed to be offered at a lower price point than the current Passat.

Keep it in perspective. For every 2 or 3 people who complain about the decontenting (typically the prior MY owners who already own their car(?)) there's usually 1 prospective owner who complains the TDI is only available in a loaded trim. You can't please everyone. If I was trying to sell new cars to as many people as possible, who'd you think I would pay more attention to?

I for one think this body is much nicer than the MkV. No more bubbly curves and chrome shield. It's roomier in the back, which matters to a lot of people shopping a mid-size sedan. I assume going with the twist-beam rather than the MLIS in the rear means the trunk can be even bigger than the already huge cavern the V has (I might be wrong on that but we'll see when they're in showrooms). On top of that, it's 300 lbs lighter than the V, which means it's just as heavy as a Golf.

It does look like the TDI Jetta will only come with a sunroof and the MDI/iPod interface, as well as the full bluetooth, so figure that in the price difference along with the updated stylng. Foglights are available with the NAV package.

So, this is the new entry-level TDI in the US. I don't think it's bad at all.

all TDIs have 4 wheel disc brakes

And I can't remember any new car in the last 15 years sold in the US that had drum brakes . I'll believe that one when I see it ...............

Most of the low end toyotas have drums, the prius has them. Drums are more efficient at not braking. They don't drag like disc brakes.

in addition, cars with drum brakes are cheaper to produce - the same mechanicals can be used for the parking/emergency brake, where a wheel set up with a disc brake still needs a drum for parking/emergency brake. More parts, more complexity...more money.

Show me the parking brake drum on your disk brake equipped TDI.

I've seen quite a few cars with front disc, rear drum. The new Ford Fiesta being one.

Notice a trend with all these cars that have drum brakes? They are all low end cars with focus on economy and not performance.
