I am looking for Premium Diesel in the Chicago area (western 'burbs myself {GE}). I would also be interested in any stations that sell Premium Diesel along the main interstates in the tri-state area.

I have tried contacting Shell & BP directly, no response.
I would imagine that stations that carry the good stuff would continue to so a list would be very handy, any station that people know of might be useful to someone if its this hard to find elsewhere. If low-sulpher is around yet that would be great to know.

Thanks, I'll keep looking, but so far I've only seen it once and that was somewhere in Iowa awhile back.

Went to the BP in Downers Grove today, there was no way from driving past to know they had diesel. No sign or any indication that they stocked diesel, strange.

Since I had the address I entered and looked, was not obvious but I did see a single pump slipped in amongst the others that had diesel. No sign or any indication on the pump that this had any cetane level or was anything other than 'diesel'.

No reciept printed so I went in to the counter to pay and just asked if they knew the cetane level.

The guy pulled out the shipping log and looked at the receipt.

This is what it said:

Premier Diesel Fuel LS NA1993 III
67.5 ... 35.3

It looks to me like it is Low Sulpher BP Premier Diesel, can anyone translate it though?
I think the 35.3 is specific gravity, and on the high side which apparently is good. I don't understand the rest though.

All you need to know is that it said premier diesel. Amoco premier is 50 cetane minimum. I'm not sure what the numbers on the sheet mean, but it's good to know they are stocking premier. I filled up there a few months ago and wasn't sure. The elmhurst station says premier on the pump.

Tried the one in Elmhurst over the weekend, no information on the pump here either.
It seems a shame that so many people are willing to drive past other stations and pay more for quality fuel and the stations fail to present the neccesary information at the pump.

Anyone have any idea about the Dundee and Sanders BP in Northbrook? Do they still have BP premium? That one's listed on the Premium Diesel page, but the entry is pretty old, and like the Downer's Grove station, no indication if their diesel is premium or not.

If so, it'd be great for me, because that one's much closer than any of the others for me.

In DG it was 2.579 the last time I bought diesel. (May 15)
It was the same price there on early April 3.

Elmhurst was 2.559 but I was not able to confirm the cetane level there.

The list elsewhere on this site looks stale, some appear to have been last updated in the 90's.

I think that might be the BP station a block or two north of the airport terminal. I've fueled up there a couple times but I'm not on that side of town very often. I just called and got the assistant manager. I asked if he knew what the cetane number was but he had no idea what "cetane" was. I then asked if it was the premium diesel and he said he didn't think so. I guess I'll have to call back during the day and get the guy who actually orders the fuel. It's so frustrating to try to find accurate information about this stuff.

I was filling at the DG station last year when the tanker was offloading. I asked the driver about the diesel. He said, yes, it's definitly premier. Can't recall what the cetane was but I've found the DG BP to usually be a few cents/gallon less than Elmhurst where the owner also confirmed is in fact premier. Why not try some B-20 at the Bell Fuels Road Ready pump in Bensenville? I got 42 mpg in my '04 NB-PD last fill-up.

You know, I've asked myself this question many times and my answer is because Bell mixes its Bio with low grade (40 cetane) diesel. Until we have a source of BioD in Chicago that has a reasonable cetane number (and it's a travesty that we don't, IMO), my gut says to stick with the BP premier. Convince me otherwise?

(I should note that I do fill up with B20 in Michigan whenever I am there, as I can find 52 to 53 cetane B20.)

The other pumps at Bell's have a sign on them that says minimum 45 cetane, and you can use them with nothing more than a credit card.

There's no Amoco Premier in MD, though there are still stations in MD that have the old stickers on them. Stations carrying those Premier stickers may or may not be selling Amoco PowerBlend (min Cetane 47). I'd say caveat emptor.

Re: jombl
This list didn't exist prior to May-2001. So, I can guarantee there is no entry that was last update in the 90's.

If there are outdated entries on the list, please do me a favor and email me the station name and (ideally) the full address of the entry that needs to be update/culled from the list and I'll fix the entry. The list is created, used, and maintained by TDIClub users. I certainly can't travel across the country keeping the whole thing up to date myself.

Beowulf's right. Premier only comes from the Whiting IN refinery and there's no way for it to get to MD. PowerBlend is likely in MD.

Please get me the address or phone number of the station. I know soemone at BP that will take care of it.

The BP station in Edgewater was built in early 05, and has two pumps labeled Premier. Unless the Premier shutdown was in the last 6 months, they put the "old" sticker on when the installed the pump...

Of course they are selling at 2.249, which is the cheapest of any of the places that do pay-at-the-pump in my commute, so ....

Anyway, here's the Map:

Ok I am confused. The post above says there is no premium in MD. There is a Shell in Frederick on Rt 40 that sells 45 Cetane for about 10 to 15 cents above all the other stations in town with the regular 40 cetane stuff. This is the same station that used to be the Texaco that is listed on the premium list. If premium is supposed to be 50 cetane what is this 45 blend??
Thanks!

I don't think anybody said no "premium" in MD. There is no BP Amoco "Premeir" (different words). There proably is BP Amoco PowerBlend (47 cetane). Shell is a different company.

Shell had rights to the Texaco name, but now that belongs to Chevron.

The is no official definition of "premium diesel".

Yeah, "Amoco Premier" is a very specific product that is a minimum of 50 Cetane. "Premium diesel" is a more generic concept for which there is no official federal definition. Different states define premium diesel differently.

It's a bit of a drive to California where you can get ULSD diesel with less than 15 ppm sulfur and cetane of 52 at ARCO stations that display "ECD" on the pump. You might want to go on the ARCO, BP site and see what fuel is available in your area. Good luck. Don

We don't have ARCO in this area but we have lots of BP stations. I had a slow night at work last night so I scoured the BP site looking for information on premium/Premier diesel. I couldn't find squat. About the only thing it will let you locate are stations with Amoco Ultimate. While I'm sure that's a fine product, I'm not going to put it in my TDI. I also called BP in Chicago looking for information on where we can find the stuff (specifically looking for central Indiana locations) and got transfered to 4 different people. The last person gave me the number for the Texas refinery. When I told her I thought that Premier diesel was refined in Whiting, Indiana, she said, "Hmm... that's the only number I have." It kills me that we have a bunch of people out here that really want to buy their product and no one can tell us where to find it. I'm sure the demand for passenger car diesel is pretty low but come on!
