if you have a mytvac, just use the little container that came with it to suck some of the extra fluid out.

I can't answer on the is over full too full.

I think that might just give the fluid space to expand without blowing seals.

Does the VW take some special power steering fluid like seemingly every other fluid on it? Mine is on the 'low' mark.

I have been using Valvoline Synpower PS fluid for the past 45K miles without any problem. Got it on sale at Checker for $1/qt.

Yes VW requires special fluid. I had my rack replaced about 6 months ago because the PO used non-VW fluid.

Cough up the dough for the real stuff. It just isn't worth it.

So is it a dealer only thing or is there some specification? Obviously I'm not going to go dump ATF in there. Can I hit checker and look for a 'VW approved' fluid?

I haven't found any specification in the owner's manual.

Thanks. The Autozone guy assures me any old power steering fluid will do - lol. I'll probably be placing yet another order for stuff for the TDI.

Could you guys tell me where the resevoir is located on a 2004 BEW automatic Jetta? I am getting a bit of whining lately (60k miles) and would like to check the level.

PS steering resevoir is near coolant bottle. It is black with a green cap. You have to insert a quarter to turn cap.

thanks so much. A few ounces of CHF11S made a world of difference. hopefully my pump did not get toast while low on fluid.

That gets expensive so I use a washer/slug.

Amsoil now makes a syn., power steering fluid for VW I beleive now, and as they say on their web, PS fluid should be changed, which no one does. It is the most negected, as most do not ever change it and racks or pumps are not cheap. I like to change on a reg., bases for the small cost that it is. As soon as I can I will be changing it again and will use the Amsoil.
