We all have vehicles we miss, but there comes a time when we need to part with them. I'm a buy cheap, fix it up and flip it after I get bored vehicle person, although I've had a few I'd really like back. So I sympathize with krashdh on that aspect. It can be pretty hard to let them go. My 90 dodge cummins is one I'm constantly reminded of. Just sits behind my buddies barn rotting away to nothing, tried to buy it back a few times and he won't sell it.
In the end, you have to do what you think is best.

Yeah my truck will never leave, or I'll never sell. I got it before the car and it's also built pretty custom. I keep looking at the list a wrote for the Golf, and it's a lot of things...when I was driving last night, looking around the interior and such, there was even more things I found/remembered.

It's a hard decision to sell. I made a similar move this year and sold my wagon for an OM648 MB. It's a highway locomotive. I kept an ALH car for winter use. Good luck.

I used to buy cars new and keep them for a fairly long time (5-8 years) and sell them when I grew tired of them. But my ALH Wagon broke that pattern: I bought it 22 years ago next month. I still drive it daily and still enjoy it. It's important to me to have my '99.5 Golf, because I don't want to be without an ALH TDI. Can't really explain that.

I think this would be a no brainer if I was a homeowner with a family/significant other and not a single guy. Rotating driving, insuring, and maintaining 2 expensive vehicles and one not so expensive vehicles adds up. Insurance also just went up this year 14% or so in average in WA alone. While having 3 vehicles is awesome (N+1) method, I'm not sure it's reasonable from a time standpoint either. I don't want to be wrenching ALL the time. I need to have time for relax and recharge

I understand. I'm the only driver in my house and currently have 5 TDIs and the 335d. It's a little excessive. Fortunately insurance and taxes on the cars are cheap because they're all old. I'm going to drop the collision and theft on the BMW and the GSW next renewal, which will lower rates further, or at least keep them from going up as much as they would otherwise. I do end up loaning cars to my kids or their SOs occasionally, so they're nice to have around. And of course I have a good source for parts. 
Peter, you brought up a good point, one more reason I keep my 2005 wagon -- it's quite inexpensive for registration and insurance! I have four old motorcycles (70s, 80s), a tractor, a utility trailer, a boat trailer (boat registered in VT) and my Jetta. Yearly registration for all is only about $300; Jetta's the only thing insured. My wife, however, has a 2018 Subaru Crosstrek, and our RV (yeah, OK that was a big one) is in her name. Her yearly registrations (2 only) is over $1000 in NH.
And just think -- we don't have Big Brother tracking our every move in our old cars! (That may be the best part, IMO.)

I have (currently) 4 vehicles on the road between my wife and I, and 3 off the road at the moment. Usually I'll add my 73 and 79 on the insurance for the summer, but not this year. Between insurance price hikes and the state registration fees it's too much to have a couple of Sunday drivers on the road. Been contemplating selling off the 79. Too much work. Once my 94 crew cab is back on the road, the expedition will get sold off. Only reason I have it is we all fit with extra room for stuff in the back. Kids and dogs will have plenty of room in the crew cab.

The w211 OM648 is an adventure.
The car is 'fun' when a Mk4 isn't and is not 'fun' when a Mk4 is. Around town it is large but it wafts around easily. The steering and brakes are heavy. This car rules the highway, the engine is ultra smooth and it is quiet and very comfortable. The torque delivery is impressive and the 722.6 trans is great. I find it to be very fast. Flat footing the pedal like a 90hp TDI will get you in trouble.
Xentry/DAS is mandatory. I've managed to fix many small issues but you want to be able to clean circuit boards, troubleshoot CAN and learn how to use the diagnostics system. Mileage is 6.8l/100 so far but I could improve that with less spirited driving.

That does sound fun on the highway, the never stop pulling that a diesel does on the highway is a problem. 6.8 is pretty good for a big sedan like that.

Krash will soon learn that the 335d seems to get happy on the highway at around 90. And it will pull hard from there. If the limiter is removed top speed is around 155.

That isn't slow... that was the first thing I learned when I got my TDI was the car liked driving around town but when you put it on a highway that is where it was meant to be. The crazy thing being as long as I am on the highway speed doesn't really matter for FE. One of the best tanks I have ever had was highway speeds for most of it. Do you know that guy who went on THIS vs THAT with the 335D? Had a tune and water meth and it was beating a 700 hp CTS-V coupe to like 1000 FT.

It's got a stage 2 DUDMD tune and stage 3 XHP tranny tune. The thing is snappy. I was super impressed in just regular mode and when I switched over to sport mode it was a completely different world

The claims for stock config are just over 13 sec for 1/4 mi and about 6 sec for 0-60.
With it tuned the way mine is, def way quicker but I really haven't driven it like that yet.

I had mine re-tuned recently by a local tuner and we ran it on a dyno. First pull is with the old tune, new one is with the new tune.
All emissions intact. The curve moved on the second pull because the operator was trying to prevent the transmission from downshifting. He did the pulls in 5th for some reason. It was a little alarming to see the speedo on the dyno display go over 140 MPH at the end of the pull.
