Hello
I have a golf 5 with the 170 hp engine that I´m trying save from the scrapyard, the car has 100.000 miles on it and is 15 years old. The issue was there before the timing belt change, torsion value got lower.
The issue is that it:
Stinks at starts up: has DPF so it should not smoke but you feel the smell of something.
Hard to start, 2-4 seconds cranking need
Down on power
Shaking when the engine gets warmer after idle.
Things I have changed
1 New MAF from Bosch and I checked its the right part, helped a little and it reacts better.
2 Oil filter 5w30 LL and filter
3 Airfilter
4 fuel filter (was past its peek at 60.000/100.000km miles)
5 Timing belt, water pump and tensions + v belt , harmonic balancer and tensioner for the generator.
Told GF that: Yes the factory timing belt is of good quality, but even though it had only 15 years and 100.000 miles and was showing lose thread, that it would be a good idea to swap it early .
6 New engine mounts
Things I have checked:
Torsion value after timing belt change: Is around 1.2 to 1.0 I will correct it but it does not sound alarming.
Injector deviation: 1.80 mg/stroke on of the injectors the others are +- 0.24.
EGR valve is still clean after cleaning a few years ago.
Main suspects.
Injectors or the seals or both
Tandempump
Worn exhaust cam
Compression issues (i really hope its fine )
Things I´m thinking of doing
The VW service manual mentions that the engine can do a self compression test, it´s crude but could give an indication.
Thanking valve cover of and inspecting the exhaust cam.
Sending the injectors of for cleaning and inspection, then testing with new seals.
Testing the tandempump, not sure if just quicker to swap it.
DPF is loaded but ecu is not complaining, is for sure up for clean and so is the EGR cooler.
changing the glow plugs, its hot outside but seams that the engine use them for regeneration.
Would be happy for any input, thanks
Sorry its it´s in the wrong place, can figure out how to move it.
