It's understandable to go with the auto. I have been toying around with the idea of putting a TDi into my Fiero (until my wife's horse managed to clean out the savings account in vet bills). The big pita though, is that it is mid-engine. Which means custom fabrication and cable work if you are going to use the manual transmission. And it's going to be some interesting hacks getting reverse to work.

I had thought of going with a DSG though, instead of one of the older slushboxes. But to go that route, it'll be significantly pricier than a 10+ year old Jetta.

It'll be precisely twice as difficult as setting up an extension to the auto shifter cable. One extension for an auto or two for manual..

I know the guy who is building this car and as mentioned in the thread, he has already installed a VR6/5spd in a Fiero. He could do a manual if he wanted to, but the automatic car was what he found.

He is not totally unfamiliar with TDI's and German cars. The Fiero builds (www.hausofguru.com) are really a side project thing. The main shop business is German car service/repair, although his main customers have M-B's and BMW's.
