None of the above - I use Castrol Edge 5w30, which is vw507.00 spec.

I was using Castrol TXT but am currently using Schaeffer's. My mechanic checked the cams at 80k and all was good.:)

Amsoil European Car Formula Synthetic 5W-30 Motor Oil (AEL) for me. It's VW 504.00/507.00 rated. I've had good luck with Amsoil in many applications for almost 40 years.

Wow. That would make you just about their first customer.

You do seem to like the product though, as fully 28% of all your posts here so far are product endorsements for it.

Wow! The first customer for Amsoil. Maybe I should get a award. Below is my list of cars using their oil. What brand of oil do you risk you car collection to? I don't sell the stuff I just use it. Sorry if I thought this site was for folks that were car people and wanted information on personal experiences. Sorry if I haven't contributed by sending photos of my car or my MPG....

But shilling a product is different than just mentioning it in passing.

Something's not right here. I say I use Amsoil and I'm shilling. Saying I'm using Mobile One is not. Sounds like Big Oil has a lot of influence on this board. I'm not shilling I just have used Amsoil successfully for many years and i said so. I was one of the first users of Mobile One and it cost me a camshaft. It's improved now, thank goodness. What's the complaint with Amsoil? I need to know, I don't want to hurt my cars. I only want to use what's best....

I don't think people are complaining about the PRODUCT per se, but about the way some users act like Amway distributors. Hmmm, AMsoil, AMway ;)

BTW, there is a thread specifically for Amsoil users here.

Also, does it meet the VW specification (507?) for your 2012 Passat?

Yes, Amsoil has a European 5W30 oil that says it meets the VW 507 spec. I'm under the 3-year maintenance policy but bought a quart in case I need to top up. It's easier to find than some other brands. The local NAPA store has it.

First problem:T5 is a synthetic blend and may not be even rated for diesels.Second problem: 30W oils not recommended in any 06 and earlier engines with flat tappets.

Use T6 only in a TDI.

Rotella T6 is the only oil I've used long term. Cheap ($20 at autozone) and readily available, can use it in my truck, and it seems to work quite well.
I have no idea what the original owner used for the first 30+k. (non-VW) Dealer couldn't tell me what they used. Amsoil was the only 505.01 I could find quickly when I realized what the spec was on my 04. After that I bought from the VW dealer the next couple of times and they changed brands. Switched to both versions of total/quartz as they transitioned from 5w40 to 5w30 (free shipping from autohausAZ). Once T6 came out I jumped on it. Have to check the logs but I think it's 60 or 70k worth? Maybe more...
Running ZDDP the last couple years as well. 163k, cam looked nice at 100k.

T5 is a synthetic blend, and is also a CJ-4 rated HDEO. I use it in my gas burners.

Becca, not that T5 is bad, but I personally wouldn't run it in my TDI given other options. I would recommend using a 5w-40 or synthetic 15w-40 in warmer weather (year around in Tampa), and if you feel like being really renegade like me you can run a 15w-40 conventional like Delvac 1300 Super.**

Put me down for Rotella T6. After the last 2 oil changes of having the dealership install the wrong oil (zvw352540s) into my 2004 jetta TDI (and unfortunately I didn't catch the error on the first change and on the 2nd change they drained it and refilled it with Valvoline SynPower HST and according to Valvoline's own website that oil only meets 505.00 standards NOT 505.01) My car is at 96000 miles and I want to keep it for many more miles and years so I ordered a new Mann oil filter and a magnetic drain plug online, and went to Advanced Auto and got 3 gallon jugs of Rotella T6 on sale for $24 something a gallon. I went home and changed the oil in the Jetta and also did a Rotella T6 oil change on my 97 Grand Am 2.4L and my Briggs & Stratton 12HP Lawn Tractor. Since T6 is also rated for gasoline engines, I figure the extra detergents and additives will help scrub clean those engines also and the extended oil change intervals will be nice too. Sorry for rambling, but I felt my story must be told.

I see quite a few people going from Mobil 1 TDT to Mobil 1 ESP. What benefits does ESP have over TDT?

If I was to switch to ESP, which version should I be using for a 2006 TDI -PD? I think there is an "M" version too......

I've seen some people say that ESP is lacking an additive that TDT has and NOT to use it with the PD engines so I'm kind of confused with all this but plan on at least staying with Mobil 1 TDT...

Techno,

I wouldn't use a VW 507.00 oil like the Mobil 1/ESP in a PD engine. The API, CJ-4/SM Spec, HD diesel oils have proven to work best in these engines. For a PD engine I'd run the thickest oil possible that allows the engine to start easily in cold weather.

Castrol edge (europe) 5w30 507. Ive got a sample kit from
Blackstone though for sampling in 1500 miles. Depending on the readings i might change to a 505.01 5w40
