Best car I ever had. It won't go in for the recall, and I'm not getting rid of it anyway, but I'm with those that think they'll go up in value, if you have one they haven't detuned (if that's what they do). They will be the coveted models TDI enthusiasts from emission controlled states will travel the country to get.

My guess is it will be a pretty small hit on performance and efficiency, but I'm not willing to give up any, and would rather throw a little more NOx around. I didn't buy it for its cleanliness anyway, and I'm about the furthest thing from a tree hugger there is. They are still way cleaner than older cars.

For those tdis equipped with ad blue it's an easy fix the older models with the NOX trap they might have trouble complying with the EPA order. Ad blue equipped models just increased DEF use, it's designed that way.

I have loved Volkswagens my whole life. First a 77 Dasher, then a 76 scirocco, then an 86 scirocco, then a 91 corrado, then a 94 slc corrado, then a 98 Audi A4, then my 2011 Jetta TDI. So my loyalty is strong. But I bought a green car, not just a cheap car. And this lying and cheating thing pisses me off. VW is smart enough and good enough to NOT CHEAT. This is right up there with Lance Armstrong.

I bought mine literally days before this whole thing broke news, and I'd do it over again too.

I bought the car to have a nice, quiet, comfortable DD that got good fuel mileage.

It will be interesting to see which car yrs were tested,I have read that West Virginia U tested 2 cars. Which yrs were they? My 09 doesn't use ad blue urea,so I expect a buy back offer , which I will reject. I'm in a non test state. We will see how this plays out.

With all the issues already facing the TDI, especially the continuing HPFP elephant-in-the-room, and then this cheating heartbreaker, nope, they add up to dealbreaker.
This!

I would have bought a GTI. I may still go that route if a buy back happens since no one else in the US offers the leg & head room in a hatchback that VW does.

My only other options for diesel that I could afford is a e90 335d. But they also have emissions issues. So if a BMW was a option I'd look at the other bmw I was considering before I bought my TDI. A e60 528i with 6mt and sport package. I still think that I will end up with a GTI since I love the hatchback format so much!

As betrayed as I feel, I don't think I would buy a VW again, actually. Not sure how I would feel if I wasn't a customer yet...

I cheat on emissions tests, my race car has fake equipment on it and takes a little bit of methanol spraying continuously to pass.. I bought my bus as 1975 to avoid emissions on it after I swap it out to burn some coal.

Ive gutted cats, changed out exhausts, tuned out cel lights, vented directly to atmosphere, wiped codes while in line at emissions place, and tricked many ECU's into doing my bidding.

I bought my TDI to tow with great MPG, its much more likely to get a chiptune and dpf delete than it is to get a recall fix.

I cant hate on VW, still converting my fleet to TDI's, so more for me as you guys bail.. If anything this makes me think VW Corporate and I are more like-minded than I thought, **** emissions when it gets in the way of efficiency.

Cheers,
-R

I'm wondering how a cr tdi does with a DPF delete and a real proper diesel catalyst as far as emissions go.

That was a route I was considering in the very near future, however after diesel gate hit I'm waiting to see what vw will do.

Or a dead one for tampering with some jail time. I have a feeling a lot of the tuning places are going to be looked at shortly.
I agree 100% It is just a matter of time. Look what happened to H&S Performance for the truck guys. I am sure the guys who have been doing any type of hardware or software deletes for emissions are running scared.

I would still buy one over a Prius. Torque, mpg, driving dynamics or a tin can with a neurotic drivetrain? No contest... It's still cleaner than a significant portion of the vehicles on the road today...

I would definetely buy TDI again. EPA as usual makes huge issue out of this. Our little 2.0 engines are nothing in comparison to V 6 and V8 engines dominating the America's vehicles landscape. I can only hope VW does not get a lot of damages out of this and hopefully will resume selling the fine TDI's soon.

I'd do it again! After test driving the Prius and Prius C in a single day I couldn't get to a VW dealer fast enough. Those cars may get great mileage but they're about as fun to drive as a shopping cart - and in the case of the 'C' I think the shopping cart may have some acceleration edge to it! One of the crappiest cars I've ever demoed. When I was shopping for cars 2 years ago it came down to the Honda Civic with sunroof and the Jetta. The Jetta had an edge in power (of course!) and in handling. The Honda wanted to plow into corners where the Jetta seemed like it could do a four wheel drift without problem.

I'm 67 and I probably won't buy another car in this lifetime. I have 13k on the speedo in two years one month of ownership. I just got the best mileage I've recorded with the Jetta on my last fillup - 44.1mpg. Considering it was mixed highway and city driving thats pretty damned good. I'm going to be very pissed off if the EPA screws with my mpg numbers! NOX is another of those 'greehouse gases' along with CO that are IMO not settled science. NOX limits (IMO) were put in place to help American car makers get an edge over VW with their TDI tech. That VW had to cheat makes little difference to me - I plan on a Malone DPF delete and flash to stage 2 at some point down the road - like when my warranty finally expires next August.

I'd buy one again with no hesitation. The mpg's are amazing, and on my last one when I got in and accident and totaled it I had a bumper jammed in my engine and it was still running and the inside of the car was in perfect condition and did what it was supposed to do!

We have a Honda Insight, which is very much like the Prius. They are not fun to drive, but my wife can squeeze 60mpg out of hers, making it very awesome. However, it takes some skill to get that and one really has to limit their top end speed. In long distance driving at 70mph, it only gets 45mpg and driving a long distance at 60mph is not attractive to me at all.

Having driven her car a lot, I wasn't interested in getting another hybrid, there are many limitations with the hybrids that make them irritating. That experience is what pushed me to get a VW TDI.

I don't know if I will regret that choice or not, it will really be the fix that determines that. If the fix doesn't destroy the things I love about my TDI, I'll be happy. I'm not worried about NOx emissions. Automobiles are not a significant contributor to NOx emissions. I'd prefer to have lower emissions, but the amount of emissions they make now as little effect on anything.

I just searched VW Canada's website, there is no mention of TDI models anymore.
Hybrid, TSI and FSI all there, but no more TDI.
Kinda sad.

Today is my one month anniversary of owning my 2015 GSW TDI S. I voted no because:

1. I'm very concerned about my resale value now.
2. I'm concerned about the performance of my TDI after a recall fix
3. I'm also concerned about the fuel economy after a recall fix

Last, but a bit less important, is that I touted how my little diesel wagon was a smart choice compared to the ugly little hybrids and high priced electric vehicles out there. Fuel efficient and low emissions, I said. Now I will get to eat humble pie in the office.
I would make the exact same comments as you about my worries, but I still would have bought my car. Perhaps if I had more money I could have afforded to buy an Audi, which to my knowledge their A4s were not affected

You shouldn't be worried about performance or fuel economy. Those can be fixed with a malone tune.

You should be worried about the emissions system in the car failing if they decide to just go the software route and "cheap" out if you will.

There's too much speculating. If VW was smart enough to create an algorithm to circumvent the EPA to produce better results for the consumer therefore they are smart enough to figure out a way to fix the problem they created for themselves and everybody else.

Either way, the consumer needs to be compensated, a buy back seems like a longshot at this point.

I'd buy them again, but my opinion might change if the bottom falls out of the resale value of these things....which I think is pretty much imminent. Both of mine are a couple years old however, if I just drove one off the lot a week ago...I'd be pretty annoyed.

No. I bought my TDI for one reason...the fuel economy. If I was in the market for a car and it was in the news that a recall was going to occur which would likely impact the fuel economy...I would have passed and bought something else.

I test drove a Ford C-MAX hybrid and had considered a Cheve Cruze Turbo Diesel. Both cars were overpriced and heavily loaded with bells and whistles, IMO. In addition, both dealers low balled my very low mileage Honda Accord trade in. Also, I was not impressed with the Honda Civic Hybrid.

VW dealer gave me what I wanted, in sticker price and in trade in value.

My 2015 TDI gives me 35MPG average city driving and 50MPG average highway.

I'm pleased with that and I would do it again. (Well, maybe hold off for a 6speed MT)...

With all the chicken little's out there claiming the sky is falling, you could probably get a second tdi for a song. Yeah, the cheat is unfortunate, but so many owners reactions are just plain ridiculous.
