Just picked up my 2012 Passat TDI SE 6sp two days ago. The mileage on my 25 mile commutes have been 42, 47, 49, and 50 mpg so far. Nice...

I noticed the bluetooth airplay on my ipad is terrible when paired with the stereo. It seems like the gain is way too high, distorting the music significantly. The AUX cable sounds fine as an alternative, but I was hoping for wireless bliss.

Would love to power up the stereo a bit if anyone has looked into aftermarket solutions. I hate to replace the head unit since it has all the functionality I'm looking for. I do feel like the system is underpowered.

Lot's to love about this car...

Decided not to wait for two months or so that the local dealer said it will take for the car to arrive. I am flying to Denver to pick up the car this Friday. I will have a 800 mile drive back. Black on black 6 speed manual.

Taking bets on whether or not I can do it on one tank of diesel.:D

And before I pick up the car a local 3M expert is installing clear bra (full package). I found this guy not a dealership guy. I want to make sure I do not get rock chips before even getting the car in the garage. 800 mile drive back. Nothing is guaranteed but I can try......

You could do it if you could get the tank full, maybe your fuel tank will fill up, mine seems to want to stop a tick below full, I really don't know how many gallons I'm able to get in, but based on the calculations I've done on fuel in and miles driven and then computer projection on miles to empty, I'm guessing 17 gallons max in my tank. Even with this I'm averaging around 46 mpg(782 miles/tank) on my mixed driving, if you are doing mostly highway 70 mph on relatively flat terrain, I would be shocked if you didn't get 46+ mpg. Remember with the new car you should keep switching from 6th gear to 5th on the highway every once in a while to alter the rpm's, it will affect mpg's a bit but I would do it for the good of your engine.

You won't regret it...does it include head and fog lights?

I'm guessing you will do so with ease. 43.24 MPGs will get you that far on a 18.5 gal tank, and many Passat owners are reporting much higher MPGs. You also have the option of drafting on the highway -- not just behind big trucks, but other vehicles. This comes in handy when wind speed is double-digits.

I know it's not apples to apples, but have exceeded 800/tank on my Jetta with a 14.5 gal tank (15.9 actual). It will be interesting to learn the actual Passat tank size. With drafting, I'm getting tank averages as high as 51MPG (again, in a PD Jetta).

No fog lights on SE manual transmission. But it includes custom install of hood, fenders, full bumper, mirrors, headlights, behind door handles, around windshield. I will report back how the job turns up. Also what I mean by custom is he will not be using a kit, so very few edges visible. He will wrap it around to minimize edges. This guy does lots of high end cars and has been doing it for long. Th dealership was nice enough to work with me in arranging indoor area for him to work on.

Thanks I was wondering what would I have to do different in my drive. I will make sure to slow down every so often and I guess I will be taking a lot of restroom brakes. Any other suggestions on breaking in the new engine welcome.

Good idea on the bra. I've scheduled getting one on my Golf for next week, will drive it pretty minimally between now and then. And regarding break-in, I'd stay away from using the cruise and vary speeds a lot. Downshift occasionally and get revs up, work towards using WOT accelerating (not in the first few hundred miles, however). Otherwise, I wouldn't worry. And if you do use the cruise kick it out once in a while, and vary engine speed and load. A lot of your drive will be pretty flat I imagine so it would be good to not let the engine stick at the same speed and load for a long period.

I was thinking that you should just alter your highway "cruise" gear from 6th to 5th and 5th to 6th every 10 or 15 minutes staying at the same speed just changing rpm's....I'm no expert but that is my understanding of a good idea on a new car while driving on the highway. There is an informative break-in thread on this site somewhere, see if you can find it, it will be very helpful.

You could also entertain us all by using cruise at various speeds in various gears to report lots of fuel consumption datapoints. ;)

Are you going to try Tint King? I hear he's pretty good at window tinting but i haven't had him do anything for my tdi

Anyone with a MT have the "phone" button on their radio? Mine is a mute button but if you look in the instruction manual, there appears to be some with a phone button. It looks like it allowes you to access phone/address book via touch screen rather than scrolling thru with sterling wheel controls.

I really like the car. Drives great and I got 46+ MPG on the first tank.

Got it!

Platinum Grey, moonrock interior, 18" wheels, 6 speed manual, floor mat and trunk liner.
Drove about 35 miles this evening with kids in the back. Wonderful ride (realize I ordered this before I could test drive any) so my first experience was driving the car I bought off the lot!!!!

Very happy so far. Where to go over the weekend . . ..

Unfortunately I do not have that kind of patients.

Someone asked how much I paid for the clear bra---- I paid $600. The sales rep at the dealership told me that they do clear bra but they could not do a fantastic job like Ben at ace automotive did. I am yet to see the car. But I am sure I will be giving him a shout out. My sales rep is an awesome genuine person and he is in active reserves. He himself drives an Audi. He told me their rate was almost twice as much and they could not provide me the coverage this guy provided. I am pretty excited to go see the car tomorrow. Right now I am enjoying Denver downtown. My sales guy Jon Wheeler also came to pick me up at the airport and took me to my hotel. He has been awesome to deal with. If anyone in Denver area needs a car go see him at McDonald VW.

I ordered these as an options so it would not be your stock car. I liked the looks and really $1100 for a different set of wheels and tires seemed fair as compared to doing aftermarket. I like the look and the ride is still great.

Ah yes!! Found my self with the same dilemma. Got up in the middle of the night and drove it down the freeway for no reason. Enjoyed every minute of it!

Pics after bringing home and cleaning it up. Got 45.5 miles hand calculated Denver to Dallas; in one tank of Diesel. And I drove it like I stole it. So far pretty impressed. I am getting about 38 in town right now.

Nice car.........It is so nice to see a new car, not just a sports car in America with a proper transmission, :)a manual transmission.:D..........

Which Gamin is that?? It looks a lot like my 1450LMT with the 5" screen.

How fast did you get it up to?? There are some long fairly flat straights on that drive if memory serves.

How did you go??? I-25 to Raton NM, US 87 to Dumas TX then down to Amarillo to catch US 287 all the way back to Dallas area????? I have made that drive a few times over the years......

The Garmin is I believe 1490XX. I think at one point I got up to 95 before I realized how fast I was going and backed out of it. I took the same route that you mentioned.

I got pulled over by a cop in Texas on my way back from Denver and he was chatty.
Cop: I pulled you over for speeding, you kinda came quick on me from behind. License and registration please>>>>
Me: Sorry I did not realize I was speeding, I was watching my speed though. Here is my license but I do not have my insurance card on me. I do have one in my email though and I can pull that up on my phone and show it to you.
Cop: I had my rear radar on I clocked you doing 77 in 70 zone.
Me: Ah
Cop: where are you coming from? whose car is this?
Me: I am coming from Denver, I just bought this car and driving back I live in Dallas.
Cop: Shocked!! You went to Denver to buy a car, you can't find a VW in Dallas....more shock....
Me: It is a manual transmission and I was not able to find the same exact car in Dallas without waiting for months and paying full retail.
Cop: Surprise!! is that a standard? Shines the light at the shifter and ask me why did I buy a manual transmission, Dallas has so much traffic.
Me: My commute is not that bad and I enjoy driving standard and I am able to get better mileage out of it.
Cop: Do you have any warrants or suspensions on the license? Any recent tickets?
Me: No
Cop: I am going to give you a warning, slow down please......goes back to his car to write a warning.
Me: Thank you, and a goodnight.

Texas, it looks like you have the phone button on your radio. That is apparently a newer version. In mine, it is a mute button. You should be able to access your phone book via the touch screen in addition to scrolling with the wheel controls.

Jealous. I still don't understand the inconsistencies in design.

Yes that's correct. I also get a big dial pad on the screen which comes in handy in situations where u have to dial extensions etc. Have you tried talking to the dealership about it or VW customer service.
