Pics of my Bora Variant

Well, I figured before I took off the summer wheels that I would get a few pics of the wagon. No better excuse, right?

Here are a few "whole car" pics and a few highlighting some of my favorite exterior embellishments.

Here's the car:

And another shot:

One of my favorite "mods" was adding these retrofitted xenon projectors to the wagon. They are constructed with single OEM Audi projectors and ballasts, the stock turn signal, and black internal housing fit into stock Jetta headlight housings. The turn signals are smoked to match the housing, but are still visible. I decided to protect them with the OEM VW Lexan covers for use in Australia (lots of dust). I also like the hood guard. It makes my wagon look like a truck.:D

I made my own PD130 grille badge for the TDI, which turned out pretty nice (although it is very dirty, and at this point should be the PD150 badge :D, hehe). I regret using a GTI grille badge, because it didn't really fit, so I had to glue it in to place. For any others attempting this mod on a Jetta, I reccomend using the MKIV GLI grille badge for this purpose.

Before I purchased this TDI, I had been meaning to put these side badges on my old sedan. I guess it is a good thing that I didn't because I love the way they look on the wagon. The Hella comet side markers came off my old car before I sold it. I think they look much better on the silver versus the black car.

In May, I picked up these OEM wheels off of a guy's turbo Beetle through craigslist. 2 of the wheels were badly scratched, and I picked them up for a good price. I planned on stripping and polishing the wheels, but never got around to finishing the job. They are mostly stripped, and lightly polished. The lips still need more work, and it wouldn't huret to shoor for the "mirror" look next time. Also, the inserts came painted Tornado Red, so I painted them gunmetal, but it's kind of hard to differentiate from black. Hopefully I can finish them over the winter.

When I added the grille and side badges, I also replaced the Jetta and TDI badges with their stylish Euro counterparts. 10 minutes and some fishing line did a stellar job.

The tails are probably my favorite exterior upgrade on my TDI. As far as wagons go, there is next to nothing as far as aftermarket tail lights. i had always liked the way the smoked Hellas looked on the Jetta, but nothing comparable existed for the wagon, so I took matters into my own hands. I picked up a set of the Euro OEM "ocean" Jetta wagon tails. They are different from the standard American Jetta wagon tail lights because the turn signal is moved from the outer bottom corner to the center of the fixture (dead spot is US spec, filled as well) and made clear, but blinks amber. This required me to rewire the turn signal, which wasn't too bad. I then purchased some spray-on light tinter, taped off the turn signals, and went to town. The result was fantastic, and to this day I have not seen a set of wagon tail lights that I like better.

Hope you guys like what I've done.

I love wagons. I can't wait to get my hands on one. Love the HID conversion you did. Looks great. Car is looking really good.
Keep up the good work.

Thanks! I must say as well, you have a pretty fine looking sedan. The lower GLI (maybe?) front valence looks great on that car, along with the chrome ring inside the bumper (how did you do that?). Quite aggressive. I have always wanted to upgrade to GLI painted valences, but have never been able to find the rear cut-out valence for the wagon.

Nice, Dan. Sorry I didn't get to try the suspension last weekend. Maybe in the spring.

Peter - I'm sure you'll like the Bilstein PSS whenever you get a chance to try it out.

BTW, the RC3+ is amazing. This auto is fast!

NICE!!! I like the grille badge. I've been thinking about doing something like that for a while. I'll have to look into using the GLI badge...

Thanks everyone for the positive comments!

LOVE IT what brand is the hood guard and the sport edition tags are the stock (avalible from dealer)?
Hood guard is from TDI Parts and I got the tags from eBay, but I know a few places have them at a decent price, I think OEMpl.us has them.

Can you post some more info. about the HID conversion?

How do you like it? Difficult to do?
As far as the HIDs are concerned, if I could do it over, I would probably not do it again, or at least not like this. They have no high beam, and they are permanently aimed slightly too low, so there is a bit to be desired. I think that I'm going to go for the micro DE HID driving lights, they will help alot when I need more light.

Also, I used Audi projectors and they were waaaay too long. As a result, I had to cut the ends of the projector housings off as close to the light as possible. I still needed more room, so I had to cut part of the intake snorkle, remove the battery box, and move the battery back.

I got all the parts off of a Vortexer, so I wouldn't know much about sourcing the parts. Honestly, if I was going to do it again, I would do one of 2 things:
1) Suck it up and buy used OEM HIDs for somewhere in the realm of $1200-$1500
2) Buy a nice set of halo smoked aftermarket projector e codes (with glass lenses, unlike mine :(), and install a HID kit and LEDs for the halos rather than what they come with - $500.

I havn't even mentioned how much time and money it took. Just know this - expect to spend 3 weekends on the lights, and more than it costs to add HIDs to aftermarket projectors . Keep in mind, mine turned out worse than aftermarket projectors!

In other news with the car, I just changed the grill. It is a Kamei sport mesh grill with another home made TDI badge job. I'll post pics soon.

A good option for those looking for HID headlights but don't want to spend the $$$ for OEM HID's - a set of Helix projector headlights nearly identical to the OEM Hella units but way cheaper!) and drop in an aftermarket HID kit. Can be done for under $800 and works nearly as well as the OE units.

Ed's got it. Don't make the same mistake I did. Sure it looks "cool," and it gives you some bragging rights, but for a hassle-free and cost effective solution, go with the above stated method, not the DIY.
