My wife and I are picking up our brand new black on gray 2003 Jetta GL 5-speed TDI tonight, yay! I posted on here about a week ago when I was considering getting a '98 Jetta TDI, but that didn't happen. Then we found a 2000 Jetta TDI automatic at a local Toyota dealer. That didn't happen either because the sales guy seemed really weasely and was reluctant to even try to contact the previous owner to see when the timing belt was done (car had 93000 miles on it). So, we ended up getting a brand new car, with 1.9% financing for 60 months. The payment isn't a whole lot more than it was on our 2001 Accent with that finance rate. I spent the weekend looking over the manuals since we got the financing done on Saturday. One weird thing I noticed is that the first listed timing belt change in the maintenance book is 100000 miles? I didn't see anything previous to that at 40, 60 or 80000. I knew about the new 80000 mile belt, but what's up with the 100K interval? If it really is that long, that's a giant improvement in change intervals. Anyway, I'm looking forward to getting it. I currently also have an '89 Jetta TD, so I now have my "fleet" of diesels like I've always wanted.
Have a good day everyone.

Yes, the interval is 100,000 miles on the 2003. Enjoy the car, you will espically enjoy driving 700-750 miles between fuel fill ups.

Nice, that's pretty decent then. I definitely will enjoy driving it, after driving an automatic Accent for 2 years. Very bland cars, and unreliable too (what a winning combination!). I'm glad I've had my old Jetta so I didn't turn into an automatic driving zombie. Now the wife gets to learn how to drive a 5 speed, fun fun.

Actually, you have the best car made to teach her to drive standard. With all that torque, almost impossible to stall.
my girlfriend proved the inaccuracy of that statement quite a few times, thank you very much.

750 miles between fillups. Who wouldn't like it, but is it realistic? Brand new car? With a/c on? 70% city diving? I've never seen more than 550 or so.

I think 750 is a realistic number. My first few tanks, I didn't vent, and filled promptly after the light came on - which gave me low 600s. with venting, that should get you into the 700s, even if you are leery of using the '1.9 gallon reserve' (which I think is more like 2.5) - I just had two 800s in a row (car is only 3 months old, just passed the 5k oil change)

WOW! Both of you must be really strong. That car weighs around 3000lbs.

You have a valuable resource here, with these forums. Just do a search before you ask a question. It probably has been covered here in great detail before.

Good Luck!

Congrats on the new car.

What did you pay? Percentage over or under sticker is what I am looking for.

...paid about 5% over invoice due negative equity but will make up for it in 1.9% finanace / $5 rebate for previous VDub owner / better MPG (5-spd vs slushbox) / etc... all told, I lost about $1K on the deal, but considering I traded an '02 slushy with 30K+ and more dents, dings and paint chips than an Earl Schibe special, I think I came out on the better end of the deal...

Not sure exactly what we paid for a percentage. Like NewJettaGuy it wasn't overly favourable for us since we were trading a 2001 Accent that was worth $5000 to the dealer, but was worth $12000 when we bought it new 2 years ago.
We financed about $16000 through VW credit with the 1.9% rate. But, we'll make out better in the long run, this car should last 15 years hopefully, and it's already got 400 miles on it and it's at 1/2 tank. And I don't think the dealer vented it when they filled it up. Our Hyundai was out of gas at about 320 miles max, hehe. I'm going to continue to drive my old Jetta to work one or two days per week, the ~120 mile per day commute will add miles up quickly on the new car.
