I sold a 2004 Jeep Liberty CRD (95k, asked $12,500, BB was $12k) back in September to buy my TDI. Only listed it on Craigslist. Two people came to look at it. Both made offers and I got my full asking price for it. It was gone in less than a week. In hindsight I should have asked closer to $14k. Then I'd be able to afford more mods!

Yea I have been looking for a jetta for a few weeks now and I am shocked how much people want for dented starting to rust high mileage cars. I looked at that ad too. most need work too. I am giving up on forum cars and hoping theres people on criagslist that understand that its not a unicorn they are trying to sell.

Just offer what you think is a fair price after factoring in what it would cost to have the problems fixed, and press on. A reasonable seller will get the hint after getting low offers or no responses.

An unreasonable seller can't be bargained with because there are too many screws loose. You just can't fix bad cranial wiring.

I wasn't really looking at TDI's and one day I saw one on craiglist. The car seemed like an OK deal so I called him up and made an appointment to see it the next day. He said since I was taking a day off and driving 3 hours he would give me the first option to buy. I drove it, liked it and gave him a $100 deposit. [He didn't have the title yet.]

Long story short, he was bombarded by calls with people willing to pay a few more thousand than the deal we had worked out. He took the high road and sold it to me and I didn't realize what a great deal I got until I stumbled upon this site.

I bet 7,900 would be easily doable. More if you try harder.

Any idea what you think you would want? My buddy would be quite interested.

The car in the original post is crazily overpriced.

BUT...

These cars are hard to find (around here at least), and people want them enough pay a premium. I paid a little more than Blue Book price for mine, and I'm very happy with my purchase. I drove 170 miles one way to get it. With bad Atlanta traffic, it was a 7 hour round trip.

My local VW dealership had a 2001 Jetta TDI a few weeks ago that lasted two days. People were going crazy over it. They essentially auctioned it off to the highest "bidder". A very clean 2001 Jetta TDI with 160k went for 8k+ (wouldn't tell me the exact price).

Based on my TDI shopping experiences (I had been looking for a while) that black one that belome posted is very reasonable. Asking 5900, probably could be talked down to 5500ish at least, clean looking car. I'd check it out if I were still in the market.

With every newbie coming here and asking what year/model should I buy and being told 1999-2003 is it any wonder the prices are high. We are creating/increasing demand for a limited aging product. I started looking for a 2003 but gave up as the good ones were way over priced. Settled on the 2005 NB BEW PD instead with 39k miles on it. No regrets and cheaper than some 2003's I looked at with over 100k miles and not as nice.

My wife mentioned that one of her co-workers was looking for a TDI. He drives between Edmonton and Calgary a lot. (About a 3 to 4 hour drive)

She wants a "new" car and has been pushing me to sell my 2001 TDI. (Like the late model MK5 2009 GTI isn't new enough)

I looked up what 2000 to 2003 TDIs were going for and found that about $6500 was average...with about $8000 at the highest. (around here)

I couldn't bring myself to do it. The car looks like new....people always ask me if it's new. In fact a guy at a stop light the other day asked if the paint was original, then commented on how good the car looks.
Plus I keep it running like new. I'm actually bringing it in to the shop on Saturday for a full inspection. I'm handy, but no expert. I'd like an expert to look it over to see what they can find....plus I'm getting the oil changed. Usually do it myself, but I'm feeling lazy this time.

I'm not sure what I'd want for it...but it'd be more than $8000.;)

Bought my stock 2000 TDI with 171k for $3500. Even paying someone to do all the work, I can come out at least $6k under his price.

Either way, unless it's a close friend and I know what he did to it, I'm never buying a modified vehicle from someone. I'd rather get a stock vehicle with a bunch of receipts than buy someone else's mess. Doing tech inspection at track events, I've seen too often the shortcuts "enthusiasts" take when "modifying" their vehicles all too often.

You & I must be twins....by different mothers.

I'm planning on getting a new Golf next year, in part because we find it really helpful to drive the cars that our customers drive. But I've learned that it's not that sensible to have two TDIs that are daily drivers. Ultimately one doesn't get used. So I was thinking of selling IBW, but can't imagine anyone would want a car with 247K on it, even though it runs and drives like (nearly) new. Maybe I'm mistaken.

I'll take it off your hands, you can just throw it in on my next order.

The problem with buying on ebay, craigslist or the like is that you have to rely on the seller fully disclosing the problems with their car. These sites are an offloaders paradise.

As previously shown in this thread (guy driving with a busted oil pan, oil light on) and a bunch of other ads (including a green 2002 currently in the classified section here) these problems are often not listed and it is the member interaction on this site that ferrets this stuff out. Stated differently, you may pay less initially on Craigslist's gem, but you could very well end up paying more in repairs --- just a thought.

i've been dieing to find something that i can afford to have as a second diesel vw, tdi or not. the problem is, i can't afford much. so i'm looking at tdi's with high mileage.

honestly, i don't know why, but i'd love to find a mk2.

there's an 81 rabbit diesel truck down here... if i can convince the wife to let me skip my birthday and christmas, i might get it.

Got my 2000 with 134k on the clock for 4400... Interior needed some work, but I've replaced the things that needed it. Now I'm just trying to find the parts to change the black headliner over.
Could have saved a little money on the leather seats had I waited a little longer to just get some used ones off the board, but at the time I was in a hurry. Thats the way it goes I suppose lol.

I'd like to put a manual in it, but I didn't realize how much even the little parts cost on these cars. I suppose I need to go scrounging in a junk yard someday :D
