Pennzoil Synchromesh transmission fluid

Based on feedback from several long time users it seems that the Pennzoil Synchromesh transmission fluid offers an overall improvement for the TDI five speed manual transmissions (PD, ALH, and older TDIs).

Has anybody used this oil in their swapped B5.5 five speed manual transmissions? Would there be any risk if knowing that it has performed very well in other TDI five speed manual transmissions (link to discussion on TDIClub).

Thank in advance for your feedback.

Thanks for the explanation. I guess we back to the more exotic G052 fluid then.

I'm running it in my DQS 6 speed conversion. 20,000km on it so far without issue.

The challenge with the Passat manual (5 or 6, doesn't matter) is that the fluid needs to lube everything which rotates, protect the hypoid gears in the diff, and provide the right viscosity for the synchros to function well.

The issue is that the high viscosity that protects the diff gears inhibits function in the synchro cones, and thinner fluid which makes the synchros work well may not protect the diff gears enough.

I ran a 75w90 synth lube this summer, and it was OK - a little notchy in 2nd when cold, but otherwise OK. Once it started to get cold though, it made shifting a chore.

I switched to GM synchromesh after much research into EP additives and CsT values for the stock fluid, different synchromesh fluids and synthetic diff lubes.

Right now, as the temps dip down to -20c at night, 2nd is kinda notchy with the synchromesh, but acceptable after the transmission warms - I would not want to go any more viscous for this transmission in these temps.

As I am concerned about Hypoid gears, I might switch out to something thicker in the summer.

Consider also that Scott Dewitt knows 01E transmissions better than most, and he fills them, in high HP RWD applications with Titan Sintofluid - a fluid that is thinner than synchromesh...

I am not concerned with extreme cold temperatures here in SE Texas. Maybe around 0ºC as the lowest on the average. I am all for putting the right oil in my five speed manual transmission but if I have various choices that are comparable then maybe I can choose the more 'bang for the money' for my climate. I see that Motul Gear 300 Gearbox Oil is around $23 through Amazon which maybe a little bit cheaper than the G052.

I might also e-mail/talk with Scott Dewitt (I bought my EEN gearbox from him) and see what he suggests (we are both in Texas and similar climate so that also helps to get the better choice).

Thank guys for the inputs. I appreciate it.

Continuing with our discussion on this topic I spoke today with the BG Company representative here in the Houston area asking for their recommendation for our longitudinal 01E manual transmissions. The representative took my information and spoke with BG headquarters in Kansas. Interesting enough the BG technician at HQ drives a Passat TDi with a manual 01E transmission and he uses without any issues this fluid:

https://www.bgprod.com/catalog/drive-line/bg-syncro-shift-ii/

I found the specs here:

Does anybody have experience with this transmission fluid in our Passats with manual transmission?
