You're not providing screenshots of errors or full scan codes.... I'm not really sure what you're doing and I'm starting to think you don't know either.

If you blew out codes without fixing stuff and are now unable to drive it to replicate the conditions to trigger them again, having the diagnostic tool won't help much since there's no issue to diagnose.

Any thoughts about why I wasn't able to call up the gateway screen?

I forgot that you're scanning a dinosaur.... CAN gateway was introduced in '04, so prior to that, they were using K-line diagnostics, so it sounds like you're SOL on that feature.
Are your software and dongle updated to the latest firmware and version?

As turbo aba mentioned, this car is k-line, not can, so there isn't a can gateway.
Next time it acts up, hook it up and snap a few photos of the codes that are logged, both on the ecm and the TCM.

Dear gawd, by now I thought it was obvious that I'm a babe in the woods wrt digital stuff. VCDS is a suite of tools I don't understand nor do I know anything beyond the rudimentary reading of codes and making them disappear. This kind of wack-a-mole symptom hide and seek is pretty maddening. Oh, and also there's no manual for these B5.5 TDIs, so I'm truly blind.

This car had a cheesy aftermarket HU in it when I bought it, but I've since pulled it and the wires are just dangling. There's some kind of adapter in there, but the steering controls didn't function. Yes, there's a recurring code for the radio, but that was there even when the HU was connected. The horn won't function from the steering wheel, but when I ran an output test last night, I got both the security and main horns to beep. I was also able to pretty much determine that the mirror switch in the door is disconnected or has totally failed, but I assume that's not relevant.

Oh one other thing, there was a gear selector code in the ABS module. I did try to save the codes before I deleted them, but I don't know how to retrieve them.

What do you mean you don't know how to retrieve them? Look in your VCDS directory\folder for the *.txt files.... usually start with LOG or similar.

Did you read the website\manual that you were directed to a while back?

[Save Codes] will save a plain-text Fault Code Report to your PC, typically in this directory:
C:\Ross-Tech\VCDS\Logs

I'd ignore that for now.... it basically just store an ECU code to alert you that you should check your TCM for codes.....
If you notice, all his codes were stored when he wasn't running\driving.
Looks like he's got some wiring issues or a failed shudder valve (or at least one that's acting up)

The EGR and anti-shudder valve are removed from the intake for "testing" purposes. Those codes keep popping up and have done so for a couple months. Other than the Emissions Workshop alarm, there were no changes in engine performance after the items were removed, except somewhere along the way the engine went from nearly always going into limp mode, to only occasionally; this despite me having absolutely nothing different to the engine.

These trans slipping problems just showed up recently. Why would a gear selection recognition code show up in an ABS module? I don't understand how a transmission can behave so badly without throwing a TCM code.

I just got back from a test drive and it ran and shifted perfectly, in fact the best I've experienced since buying it back in June. Other than all those output tests last night, the only other thing I did was remove the stereo adapter, as per that link T-ABA posted earlier.

When the trans acts up again, I promise I won't clear the codes prior to doing a deep dive with VCDS.

Never ever clear codes without saving first. Always run autoscan and save before anything else. When you have an issue, troubleshoot.... Look at measuring blocks, do output tests, log sensors/values and come up with theories. Based on that, unplug suspect sensors if possible to validate your theory before throwing parts at the problem.

Why would a gear selection recognition code show up in an ABS module? .

Probably because it uses thw ABS wheel speed sensor and compares it to the trans output shaft or something... If the varience is too great for the available gear ratios and rpm, it can only report that you are using an unknown gear to go X fast at Y rpm.

I'm wondering if a slipping TC would throw a monkey wrench into the mix because the expected engine RPMs won't match the gear ratio and axle speed. If I hadn't flushed those codes, we'd probably know the answer to that question right now.

I sure that if you want to be a trail blazer, you can spend some time to search for a SSP that explains how your slushbox works.... that the way most of us learn about all these systems so that we can at least have an iota of a clue as to the crap we poke around at.
