I have 30,000 miles on my TDI PD and I too have had to add oil for the first time. Close to 1/2 liter as well. Makes you think...?

With 7400mi on my 2004 Golf IV uses no oil whatsoever.

I drive a 70-mile round trip commute 4-5 days a week, at speeds between 50 and 80mph, with the rest of my driving amounting to perhaps 20 miles a week in-town. I shift at 3000rpm after the engine is up to operating temperature and at 2500rpm before, and try to rev it out to redline 1-2 times per week.

Close to 6,000 miles on my Passat so far, and since the first oil change at 4,992 miles I have not had to add a drop of oil- still right at the top of the hashmarked area of the dipstick.

I have an '05 TDI Jetta Wagon. Added 1/2 quart the day I bought it. Did the first oil change at 4500 miles. Still at full now at 6500 miles.

I want that drivers console!!! I'd love to have the temperature show in my cluster... the navi is a nice touch, but not necessary in a $20K car, the climitronics would be nice though...

I also have a 2004 Jetta. It has 33000 miles on it. I too have to add a little oil every now and then. I know what you mean when you say that it concerns you. I am in the same boat. Most of the other people here have posted that they do not have to add any between changes. All of my miles are highway. I change my oil and filter every 10000 miles. I change the filter only every 5000 miles.
Since the one time I had to top up the oil I haven't had to do it since. Maybe I was driving her to hard at the time. I have been known to be a little heavy with the right foot while on the highway.

These engines like the "go peddle" to be pushed... they were made for the autobahn..... Unless you are doing triple digit driving every day, for long stretches... i don't see why you'd need so much oil...

Something is more than just not right, it is very plainly wrong! I wouldn't even be driving it. It's still under warranty, get it into the dealer and make them figure out what's wrong with it.

added my first liter today at 16,500 US miles.. it was barely below the crosshatches after sitting for 10 hours while at work. i drive 80-100 MPh everyday on the expressway. shift at 2.5k cold and 3k hot usually take off at about 2/3 throttle.

I have had to add 1 quart to my 2004 every 10000miles to keep toped over that range. I have 27000miles now. Seems to use more when the rpm's are constantly up, noticed when I have to do a lot of interstate travel it goes a little faster. Thinking it is from the oil mist in the crankcase being drawn to the intake.
I had posted before there was a small leak on the oil supply line to the turbo, mine is only enough to make it wet to touch not enough to drip on the plastic belly pan though. Some of you may want to check there. I haven't looked in the intercooler yet though.
And I still hate buying 505.01 at the dealer... but if it breaks atleast it was all what they recomended!

Updated:

The low oil light came back on at 21,000 km.

It looks like I'm using about 1 liter/10,000 km or 1 qt/6500 miles. This is on the high side of normal IMO, but still considered normal.

Note that I do run the car at full throttle for extended periods regularly.

I added a total of 1/2 liter during the first 5000 miles. Just had the oil changed so I will see how she does with straight 505.1 and not break-in oil.

My Seat TDI has done 26.000 km (appr. 16.000 miles) and I never had to add any oil yet.

Word of caution: If you run the car at full throttle regularly you will have bigger problems than oil consumption, plus there is no point in this because the power drops off way below "redline".
My new PD Jetta burns a bit less than 1 quart every 10,000 miles. I'd say 1 every 6500 is getting into the "excessive range" You are likely blowing it out the ccv into the intake tract.

No point? When you are in 5th gear at 4000+ RPM, what do you do? There is no 6th.

I have to largely disagree with your statement. These engines are robust and fully designed and capable of running long extended periods at full load.

1 liter/6500 miles at high load is not excessive by any stretch. At worst, it's slightly above normal considering the conditions.

In fact, VW considers excessive to be 1 liter per 650 miles (1000 km).

just wondering if we're all on the same oil specification and viscosity page, since some contributing to this thread are not from north america (where nearly everyone is using 505.01 5w-40).

in our 04 Jetta PD i've seen slight oil consumption using 505.01 5w-40 oils. in our 04 Golf PD using 506.01 0w-30 oils i have seen no measurable oil consumption.

I used less than 1/3 quart of 505.01 in 5000 mi, And I got my Castrol 506.01 yesterday and plan on my first oil change this weekend
J - is this a typo? Where / how did you get Castrol's 506.01?

At high RPMs, my car emits a noticeably blue smoke. When I say high RPMs, I mean above 3500RPM. Is this normal? My car only has 3,200 miles on it so far and has done this ever since I started exploring the higher RPM region after the first 1,000 miles. Oil consumption has been at a minimum, maybe 1/4 quart. I did an oil change last weekend because I'm heading out West for a 2 week roadtrip that will take me well over the 5,000 mile service mark. I switched from the factory fill to Motul 505.01 so we'll see how it does with oil consumption in the next 2 weeks. But again, it concerns me that my car's emitting blue smoke at higher RPMs. Is this normal??

In looking at the bottle, Its less than 1/4 quart added in the first 5000 mi. No misprint on the 506.01, I had it imported from Germany by Dan, at Hillside Imports, Its hella expensive though, I need to get a group buy set up as the Haz Mat regs make it expensive by the case, we need like a 6 case minimum.
In my first observations with fuel economy tests with some mixed highway and in town driving, to the same places on the same tank, I am reading a 3 mpg improvement from the 506.01 over the factory fill oil, these readings were observed from the FIS cluster
