A quick and simple one to answer, is the Passat ('97 model) a front or rear drive car? been trying to find out but no joy so far!

A 97 model in the UK is a B5 whereas a 97 model in the US is a B4. They carried on selling the old model in the US for a year when the new one was already being sold in Europe.
The B4 is front wheel drive with a transverse mounted (east - west) engine.
The B5 is front wheel drive too but the engine is longitudonally mounted (north - south) with the transmission behind it and drive shafts sprouting form the sides Audi style.
You didn't get stuck in the snow on Friday in a rear wheel drive did you ?

A rule of thumb with VW is:
air-cooled= RWD
water-cooled= FWD (or FWD-based AWD)
air-cooled= RWD
water-cooled= FWD (or FWD-based AWD)
