I have a 2006 Passat 1.9tdi bxe that suddenly started backfiring, it happens randomly while driving. I feel a slight loss of power and then a loud bang from the rear of the exhaust. Happens every 5 to 10 minutes.
What could be the issue here?

It sounds like you're dealing with a backfire issue on your Passat 1.9 TDI. Common causes could include fuel injector problems, a clogged DPF, a turbo issue (like a boost leak or sticking wastegate), or a faulty sensor (such as the MAF or oxygen sensor). A vacuum leak or incorrect timing could also be to blame. I’d recommend checking for error codes first, then inspecting the exhaust system, fuel injectors, and sensors. If the issue persists, a mechanic might need to check the turbo and perform further diagnostics. Hope this helps!

Think maybe the wastgate might be sticking sometimes, have got the overboost code a couple of times under full throttle. Just bought the car and it has been running here in cold Norway without the supplementary webasto heater working. So maybe a lot of running without proper engine temperature has caused sooting?
