Just came home from a 15 mile trip and the Fan was running after I shut the car off. Went in the house for a few minutes, came out and it was still running. Started the car, guage was still up at normal range shut it off and the fan stopped running. Was afraid I would not have any battery in the morning. Have only heard the fan run 3 or 4 times in the past 17,000 miles. Due to the Temp could this be the beginning of a problem?

No. You have a DPF equipped car, a filter that collects diesel particulates from the exhaust. The fans will continue to run if you interrupt a dpf regeneration, a process to burn the particulates to ash. This is completely normal.

The fans can also continue to run if the car is above a set temperature. This is of course unlikely in the ambient temp you were in just FYI, that there is more than one reason for the fans to run.

Thanks. 3 additional questions. Would this occur periodically? Would the Quality of the Diesel Fuel effect when and how long the fan would run? Interuption of a regeneration, meaning that the cleaning of the filter is a on-going thing and just happened to be going on when I shut the car off?

VW hat meinen '14 Passat TDiSE getötet.
This occurs periodically on all our 2012-2014 Passats, and it is not related to the quality of the diesel (it is normal).

It often happens while you are driving, but if you drive for short distances, it may happen just after you park the car in the garage.

Do not interrupt the process (it is a designed feature), just let the garage door open so that the car takes care of its business.

regeneration frequency

This is my first post. I have a new 2013 Passat tdi with dsg transmission. I commute 21 miles in each direction on back roads with an avg. speed of about 45-50 mph. I currently have approx. 3300 miles on the car. My concern is the frequency of the dpf regeneration cycles. Seems like my car does one at least every week, sometimes twice. At 45 mph, the tach is well below 2000 rpm. Will driving in sport mode to increase the rpm at 45 mph increase the exhaust temp enough to prevent the regeneration cycles? I'm concerned with premature dpf failure from ash loading after reading all the posts concerning this. Most of the time, the regen. cycles are interrupted in the morning when I shut off the car at work. I have used nothing but mobil diesel from a high volume station, so I know the fuel is not old and contaminated. This is my first diesel and I typically keep my cars for at least 10 years. I am going to invest in the Ross Tech software so I can monitor the ash load.

My 2013 Jetta TDI and I have the same distance commute as you but it's on an interstate where I can cruise at 70-75 MPH.

In the 10,800 miles since new, I have had exactly 3 regens where the fans stayed on after shutdown.

I also kept my DSG in Sport mode for most of these break-in miles. The regular Drive mode just feels to me like it's lugging. I use Sport mode until the engine's warmed up and shift to Drive on the highway. I got over 50 MPG in a 25 mile stretch of interstate this week. I suspect the wind was at my back. :)
