I'm heading for 38 and hating every minute of it, getting old sucks, I have the body of a 20 year old (probably 5% body fat) act like i'm 18 (weelie my mountain bike every chance I get) but the body is starting to slow down, trying to keep up with a 5 year old and a 19 month old!!!

Getting REALLY close to being 31. Kids are just a thought right now...locked into school for two years. (never to late to reinvent yourself)

I am sooooo glad streeker02 started this thread!! Thank-you!! I've often wondered on average how old some of the members here are and if I'm just too old to be messing around modding cars and being just a general geek on the computer. I'm 41 last month on the 16th.

So here is some interesting things I've been around for.
  • I watched the moon landing or so I've been told. Have vague recollection.
  • Mom and Dad almost went to Woodstock.
  • I built a push go-kart out scrap wood and an old set of wagon wheels.
  • I had a model steam engine built from a kit.
  • My dad once had more hair on his side burns than I do on my head. Of course these days that's not saying much!
  • I remember Mom and Dad driving by a police car and not worrying about having a seat belt on.(Something I never drive without since I'm 16).
  • Eagles
  • Pink Floyd
  • My Dad's van was lined floor to ceiling in shag
  • I know what "breaker double bar", "what's your 20?", and "Can I get a 10/9 on that" mean.
  • Elvis died on my 10th birthday.
  • I took Fortran and Cobol in high school on a computer that was bigger than 2 classrooms and I wore out many pencils coding countless bubble cards.
  • I had Pong.
  • I remember Dad saying if Atari 2600 comes down to $100, we'll get one.
  • I took basic language on the Commodore PET.
  • I took machine language on the Commodore 64.
  • I played the original Space Invaders.
  • I was at the Canadian Nationals for roller skating back when there was no such thing as inline wheels. Riddell Boots and Blazer wheels were the best.
  • My first car had chrome valve covers, craiger SS wheels, dual exhaust, no cats, air shocks, slap stick, and took regular gasoline.
  • I secretly taped the last episode of Dukes of Hazzard on my 18th birthday while I was out at the local bar illegally.
  • I watched Challenger disintegrate on lift-off while home for lunch from school. I was late that day after lunch.
  • I was first in our maintenance shop to have a 486DX33 computer. Had a 1 meg video card, 4 meg of ram, no sound card, no cdrom, 2400baud modem and DOS 5.0. Cost - $2700
  • I sent email before there was anything called the world wide web.
  • I remember seeing the world wide web when it was nothing but a bunch of geeks like me that had "home" pages.
  • After I hit 40, I found myself wondering why the heck are my knees always sore and how come I have to hold this page so far away from my eyes to read it??
Ah right I guess this is enough. I hope some of you enjoyed the nostalgia and I hope it maybe triggered some fun memory. I've missed a couple of gtg's this summer mostly due to #$% luck and bad timing but I hope to meet some of the members here. I've found much enjoyment and learning here.

Lmao, Ookpic thats a pretty interesting list. One thing that I notice is that our generation (well my generation and those around my age group) won't experience some of the cool "first time" things like that.

You say something like Fortran, either look at you like you have ten heads or ask if it can be compiled into C++ executable, ask a kid if he wants to make a push go-kart and he'll give you the finger and keep playing xbox lol.

I'm nowhere near 40 and I have knee problems... And a few other battle wounds that never heal since I won't take a break from athleticism. So then if my body already hates me and feels old, what will it be like when it's really old? hehe

I was chuckling to myself the whole time I was writing it. I had tons more but I had to hold myself back. Xbox don't even get me started. I've had to actually teach myself to do network administration, QOS, and in home bandwidth shaping just so I can control the amount of bandwidth passing through my sons bedroom. LOL. He doesn't even watch regular TV he just streams episodes he wants to watch direct from net. Cheers!

A few months too young for that :)

My parents were never into that scene

Yup, had one of those, without sides on it :D can you say "Road Rash"???

Had a full H.O. Railroad set on a 4x8 sheet of Plywood

I had to use IBM Card Puch systems in High School, fun things to do with a Card Hopper and Line Printer. Remember the PDP11?
Ookpic said:

Yup, I had Pong and the Atari 2600 with all the cartridges and paddles

Basic on a PET, and machine language on a Commodore CBM. Had to put a 5 line Peek, Poke statement at the beginning of all my programs to prevent other students from stealing them from the Shared Single Sided 5.25" Floppy Drive or MASSIVE 8" Floppy Drives ;)

My first was a hand-me-down Buick Estate Wagon with Fake Wood panels on the outside. Nothing like 2.5t of vehicle that got 7mpg going downhill in neutral with a tail wind

I watched that as it aired, I had no life :(

We watched that at school as it happened in the school caffeteria, They sent us all home after that for the rest of the day

First desk top that my dad had was a Zenith 286/8Mhz with 1mb ram, ATI 256k VGA Wonder Video card, 80mb Full Height Hard Drive (MFM if you remember them), 1 Low Density 5.25" Floppy (360k) and 1 High Density 5.25" Floppy (1.2mb). That with Monitor and Okidata Wide Printer costy about $9000 at the time:eek::eek:

I remember helping Dad drill holes in the B and C pillars of our new EH wagon so we could install seat belts - they weren't even optional in 1964

ok let's see, 39 going on 19, or so my wife tells me. I still find farts funny, so that makes me 'young', though i've heard it called other things.

Farts ARE funny. Laughter makes you feel young, so laughing at farts no matter how old you are is acceptable. It's healthy! :D

I was at the Canadian Nationals for roller skating back when there was no such thing as inline wheels. (end quote)

The past is prologue/what goes around comes around....I'm 73 (see earlier post) and my neighbor (female) had inline skates in the early 1940s....steel wheels and they clipped onto her shoes using a skate key. I was envious of her skills. She was very good. BTW, urethane had yet to be discovered and rubber was not available....."Don't You Know There's A War Going On?" was the answer to all questions about non-available items. Next time you youngsters see your grandparents...ask them about the deprivations of the WWII era. Might make you appreciate what you have now? I know it does me because I lived it.

Maybe to you, but certainly not to anyone around you and especially not in the confines of a vehicle!

BTW it is a rude thing to do!!!!
