Orville; my first TDI - 2003 GL Jetta Sedan

As I'm fairly new to the forum, I haven't really done much to my car. But I've got a couple of pages of notes and projects I want to do, everything from new suspension to replacing the headliner.
Anyway, here is Orville, had him since he had 12 miles on him.

I love our jeep, almost as much as the tdi. I almost feel like if anything ever happens to the jeep motor, i should replace it with a tdi. haha.

yes it is. my mother bought it barely used in 74 or 75, had it ever since. learned to drive in it, and now its been passed on to me.

It looks like you take good care of all your vehicles. The Jetta looks great, but then again, I'm a bit biased for platinum gray, since they aren't all that common.

Thanks. I love the platinum gray. It is starting to need some paint touch-ups. It is mostly chips in the hood, so a little sanding and extra paint and i'll be set. i just need to go get a bit more, the little bottle of touch up paint i had has dried out. I was thinking of trying to add some thinner to it, in the hopes of being able to use it but I wasn't sure if that would work or if I needed some more specific, car specific, paint thinner.

I've ignored my poor Orville too much. I've got quite a list of things to do. The new addition to the TDI family, Wilbur is going to give me the ability to do a lot of work with Orville that I haven't been able to do since Orville was my daily driver and I couldn't really get in there and get done what I wanted to do. So I've found that there is no water or moisture in the trunk, but I found some on driver's floor.. and not just some dampness, but a fairly soaked carpet. It wasn't wet like that a couple weeks ago, but we just had a long bit of rain.

anyway, so i'm searching around the car for other leaks and to check the seals and all that around the doors and found a trail of ants.

All those little white things on the right side of the picture are the eggs or food or w/e but the ants were carrying them all over. the trail was moving down the driver's side of the windshield under that rubber on the edge.

The car sat for a few weeks in a driveway and i think they must've infested the car then.

What is the best way to get rid of them without hurting any parts of the car? I don't want to spray insecticide if it's going to degrade any of the rubber or anything.

And the second picture is my driveway, or used car lot, as my neighbor begrudgingly calls it. It's actually missing a few cars, but my 3 cars are there (bug, 560SL and Orville)

thanks. as soon as i finish with Orville (the plat. grey jetta), the bug will be the next project. it has a lot of issues. For a long time my parents refused to keep it maintained and it had been neglected for 5 years or so. Nothing that can't be addressed and fixed. I'm looking forward to it. That bug is what I learned to drive in and it is what turned me into such a VW guy in the first place. My 1981 MB 300D turned me to diesels.

I'm still working on getting my 1971 Beetle sorted out. Six months now and I have lots to do, but I am picking away at it. When you start yours, watch out for the Chinese parts.

I'm always worried about that. I plan to try to find a resource like tdiclub for the beetle restoration and/or find some local or somewhat local guru. I'll be using your thread too. I'm really interested to see what you end up doing.

That being said, here is a list of things I need to do with my Jetta, Orville:

1. Water damage/leak in driver's side cabin area. The carpet is fairly wet after it rains so I'll be ripping up the carpet and cleaning it out.

1.a. I'm going to tear out the entire interior trim, clean it up and replace it. In this replacement time I'm thinking of reupholstering the seats or getting leather seats. I'm not sure what my options are. More research on the forums are needed.

2. I'm still running the original everything. I am going to replace/upgrade the suspension; from the shocks/struts/springs to the cabs and tie rod ends and cv boots and what not.

3. I'm worried about some noises I'm hearing/feeling. I'm worried the DMF is about to go out. I also feel like the turbo is dying. I'm preparing for a clutch/dmf replacement and a turbo replacement. All this will include other maintenance and upgrades that will be easier to do during the process of removing/replacing some of these other things. I'm thinking; IM cleaning, maybe egr delete, etc.

4. Headliner needs to be refurbished. Maybe a time for some fun cloth or some other neat idea instead of cloth?

5. I've got a ton of chips and nicks and have ordered the color doctor thing to try to fix it and make it look better. There are several chips that were fixed with a small thing of paint the dealer actually gave me. He said he just finished some bodywork on a 2003 platinum gray jetta and had some leftover paint. Needless to say, it is bluish and is obviously not the same color. It's easily noticeable.

6. I am tired of refurbishing the plastic headlights every six months after they become super dingy and blurry. I am thinking of trying to find a glass lens cover for the ones I have or replacing them. I saw the Hella ones on idparts, and they're not a terribly high price. I still have to do some more research as I've never considered buying other headlights. Euroswitch add too.

7. New wheels so i can refinish the steelies. idk if i want vw alloys or some aftermarket wheel. If I get to this poitn and have money leftover, i might just get something cheap.

The past several months Orville has sat, mostly because I injured my back and couldn’t get to the jobs I wanted to, but also because a leak appeared and I couldn’t figure it out before it made the worst damp/rotting smell in the cabin. Even running the air smelled horrible.

I felt better this past weekend so I went out and started cleaning out the underside of the cowling.

I had my windshield replaced not long before the leak started I think... maybe the person who did the work didn’t put it back together snugly or something, I’m not really sure.

Anyway, it was a mess. Here are some photos. Also, I broke the cowl at the passenger side windshield wiper hole, but I don’t know if it matters since I believe water is intended to get through. I’m going to replace it anyway.

New damage: I had no patience with this. The driver wiper arm came off easily but the passenger wiper arm was stuck good and leaning over the hood was killing my back, so I got a bit frustrated. I had already decided to replace the part, so I wasn’t too worried about it.

Here is the driver’s side. It was quite thick.

The crap was deep on both sides before i vacuumed it out

After the vacuum I got some wet wipes and a toothbrush and got as much as I could reach. I cleaned up everywhere the cowl touched/sat and the cowl itself. I am going to replace it, but I don’t have a new one yet so I’m putting the old one back on while I find a place to buy a new one. I’ve looked a little and it’s hard to find, so I guess if I have to I’ll drive the 2 miles to the dealership.. maybe it won’t cost too much there :rolleyes

Anyway. It looks a million times better now, but I didn’t have any photos as my phone died and I was running late that day. When I replace the cowl I’ll be taking more.

Not a big job or anything, but it was satisfying to clean all that gunk up.

I’m really annoyed with the state of Orville right now. I need to get started on this ASAP before it gets worse.

I found and stopped the leak, so no more water is getting in the car but I’ve gotta clean up this car.

I started by taking out the back seats and I assume I just need to remove everything I can, get it clean, and then work from there.

My concerns are whether or not I can get all the nasty out. I’m sure others have dealt with this or worse. So any pointers would be very appreciated.

Looks like it is ready for an "extreme makeover"! I believe on Vortex you can find a DIY on recovering the door panels. Good luck!

My Jetta has a lot of little stuff wrong too. Junkyards can provide a lot of interior options. I got leather seats for mine. A lot of B5 Passat interior parts fit.
