While testing driving..unlike my 03 Passat and the 2010 Jetta TDI Sedan the gas tank on a JSW has no release trigger in the driver side area. You have to click the panel on the gas tank out. Why is this?

Simply put, it's probably cheaper to make the new setup. I've read in a couple of sources that VW simplified production (i.e. cut costs) of the MkVI platform in order to allow for nicer interior materials at roughly the same price point as the MkV platform. The MkV platform had an actual button on the driver's door panel to release the fuel door. The 2010 JSW is kind of halfway between a MkV and MkVI...it has the upgraded interior and new front end styling of the MkVI, but not the simplified production of the MkVI platform. So it probably got the new (less expensive) gas cover release as part of the updated look.

Just my guess though.

Guess I will pick up one of those locking caps than.

I think it would be a lot more fun watching them when the car they put it in dies shortly after starting. Gasoline cars don't run well on diesel. :D

Personally I would rather have the manual version with less to go bad. I am just waiting for the day when the button does not open the cover and I am running on fumes. :(

But I think it's still tied in with the central locks. According to the owner's manual, the doors have to be unlocked to open the fuel door. I haven't tried to open the fuel door when the doors are locked to see if it works that way or not...the owner's manual seems to have a few "oversights"...like talking about an oil temperature display in the MFA when there isn't one! That's what I'd like is an oil temp display!

Keep playing with it and I think that you will learn that the JSW's fuel door is locked whenever the car is locked (it's that way on my 2009). If the car doors are unlocked, so is the fuel door. If the car doors are locked, so is the fuel door. You don't need a locking cap (unless it's to keep others from putting gasoline into your diesel tank).

yeah the central lock locks the fuel door as well. I like the new set up. on my mk4 i forget to relase the door sometimes. this one is so much easier.
I always used to open the trunk instead of the fuel door! Even after 100,000 miles I couldn't break myself of that...

With the push mechanism of the current fuel door, I have wondered if this design will be an issue to those owners living in very cold, icy climates where the door would be frozen shut. Would be a shame to have to pry the fuel door open because of ice build-up.

I think it'd work better than the older release. With the older setup, there was some sort of mechanism in there that released the fuel door latch. With the new one, I think that the act of pushing on the fuel door to get it to release would break up whatever small amount of ice managed to get in there. Just my opinion though, and we ALL have those! :D

On a related note....

Does anyone else carry disposable plastic gloves to wear when refueling. Makes it easy to avoid that overwhelming diesel smell!

I always have a pair of leather work gloves in the car for fueling. Served me well for 270k miles in my diesel F350.

I carry a pair of green rubber type gloves to re-fuel with. they have the large cuffs that are easy to get on and off. I used to use leather gloves, but found that they would absorb the diesel, and then you are back to square one. works for me----

As has been stated, locking cap is not needed. The fuel door is locked when the car is locked. I had the same initial concern. It's actually better design than the 'fuel-door release from the interior' design, although it does take some getting used to. Suppose you are standing at the pump with a locked fuel door...forgot to release it...you'd have to walk around to driver's side...with the '10 jetta design, you just unlock the doors and then open the fuel cover. At a full service station, you press the unlock the doors button (from inside the car) rather than pull the fuel door latch.

Joe

All "on road" diesel is required by law to be ULSD (in the US), so finding it is not too difficult. However, there are some fuel stops that do sell "off road" diesel (often called "red" diesel - because it contains a red dye) for use in tractors and generators, etc. These pumps should be clearly marked as "for off-road use only". Just avoid that and you will be OK.

I need to double check, but I think when you open the driver's door it unlocks the fuel door. I do know that hitting the remote unlocks the driver's door and the fuel door.
