Oldman Intake failed.

I was driving from Arizona to Texas when I lost boost. I pulled over and discovered that the Oldman intake pipe was no longer attached to the turbo. Being stranded out in the middle of nowhere, I couldn't access the pipe from below. I jammed my arm down there and wiggled it back onto the turbo lip as best as I could. The two brackets that mounted the intake pipe to the engine are no longer usable. The bracket on top was broke in half and the bracket on the side was missing the bolt. It appears that the bold broke off which prevents me from using another bolt.

Luckily, I had a wire coat hanger that I used to hold the intake up. Long story short, I'm going to need a new intake. I'm not so sure I want another Oldman intake if this is going to be the result. Any suggestions for an ideal replacement and a good source for said replacement?

Thanks for your help.

Is yours a "real" OMI (from years past) or one of the newer ones from Street Toys or TDI Parts?

Who installed the intake? Its not on the pressurized side of the turbo so it didn't come off from boost. Sounds like a failed install to me.

Sounds like bolts were never tightened properly or perhaps they just vibrated loose and the bolts snapped because of all the movement. I've never heard of this happening before. I wouldn't be afraid to get a replacement from Street Toys or TDIParts.com. I've had both their pipes and they're nice. I prefer the OEM PD150 inlet pipe myself though. OEM fit and 3". What more could ya want?

Sounds like the tabs that mount to the intake manifold cracked...

How the hell can you install a TIP wrong? I doubt this was user error.

Yes I had one of the original OMI's and the weld on both tabs broke on mine. I was closer to home so I just drove home and put the OEM back on. Now I have a streettoys OMI waiting for me to put it on.

I have an original OMI. The tabs are intact, but the bolt at the lower bracket (above the turbo, but below the intake manifold) fell out 10K miles after the install. I never replaced it because I couldn't figure out the bolt thread and length needed, but haven't had any problems after 80K miles later.

Yes, this was a "real" Oldman intake. It was not install error. It's been on for quite some time now. The upper bracket broke between the weld and the mounting hole. The lower bracket is still intact, but the bolt apparently snapped off. I doubt I'll get a replacement as this was from when they were first being produced.

So, I'm guessing my choices for a replacement are:

1. OEM part for ALH - $? part #?
2. OEM part for PD - $? part #?
3. TDIParts OMI - $179 + s/h
4. Street Toys OMI - $139 + s/h
5. KermaTDI OMI - $163 + s/h

Is that correct? Thanks for your help.

My lower bolt came off after the first timing belt was replaced, tied it up with electrical ties. The top bolt striped out so it just does what it wants to. I have 240,000mi on it, 130,000mi like that. Figure out how to tie up the upper portion in place and use the benefit of the pipe you have paid for. My maf didn't seem to care, it is still good.

If you order one from kerma make sure to ask if it is in stock and ready to ship immediately. You might never see it.

I had the first OMI and both tab mounts broke after time and I drilled and put
a rubber spacer in between the new part of the tab and the old part and ran for years.

I did get a new OMI about 6 mo's ago and the top tap is very different and the pipe
weight is less than the old OMI and the inlet on the turbo is different,,its the size to
fit the turbo where as the old OMI used a spacer that went on the turbo then the hose
went over that. I always thought that it may come off there so I siliconed it to together.

I could have never gone back to stock I still have the parts but ,,,,,,,,,

It's an original OMI.

I purchased it from BLUBYU in October of 2004.

I don't have any photos yet. I'll post them when I do.

Seems like getting an intake tube from Street Toys might be the cheapest route.

Keggo,

I have the 2.5" version of that pipe that uses the stock accordion hose.

Cool! I was considering purchasing one... but other things come first, I guess... Saving for Doniol's boost gauge and a chip tune...

I have one of these as well, and vibration killed the top mount. Be sure to use loctite or something.
How much harder does that make it to take off? At some point I want to see if I can paint it with heat reflective paint.

nah, you can get the red loctite out, you just gotta give it one good crank to break the seal. and after that its tight turning but it'll come out.. take it from a farmer that has a lot of viberations and dont want bolts comming out

+1

I've put red loctite on the flywheel bolts on my Impala and have already removed the bolts once without a problem. I don't want the bolts flying backing out at 7000 RPMs!
