I also own a 82 Jetta diesel. I need help on replacing the cold starting cable that is located below the left vent. This cable connects to the injector pump. Any walk throughs would be a big help..

I'm looking too install a new cable for the cold weather choke. Question was on the injector pump, when you feed the wire/cable in and set the screw does the lever have to be moved foward, backward? I'm lost...

Think about it. When the lever is pushed in the pump lever should be as far foward as it goes. Push the lever foward pull the new cable with a needle nose and tighted the screw. Now when you pull the lever out for cold starts the cable pulls the lever back to advance the timming. Some times you can just slide the new cable in the old housing, this save a little time.

On my old Jetta and my Caddy the pump lever only moves side to side not front to back. When the knob is pushed in, the lever should be all the way to the passenger side. The Bentley says to have the knob about 2mm (5/16") out from the dashboard, then tighten the cable at with the lever ALL the way to the passenger side. The 2mm is to ensure the lever moves all the way when you push the knob in completely.
