Yep, have already had a couple higher mileage EA288s through here with no oil pressure due to the oil pump drive belt failing... same as they do on Fords. The oil pump isn't the issue, it's all the belt chunks that get clogged in the pickup and either the engine starves for oil that way, or the belt chunks finally allow the belt to fail and the oil pump just quits turning altogether.

Dumb idea. Dumb, dumb, dumb.

I'm looking to do timing belt #2 this spring at 250k. Do you think I should do oil pump belt too? Is there a gasket involved... Trying to get a fix on it in the parts book:

Looks like the oil pan come off too.... geez...

This guy in Germany replaced his belt with a chain!

Thanks @oilhammer

The front seal housing, and the lower oil pan, as it's often bent during removal.
And yes, I would definitely replace that oil pump belt at the same time. I've got a customer who had one fail on his at 270k miles not long after the timing belt was done.

My last expedition undercar, I noticed a small leak off the oil pan, so I have motivation to reseal the pan... Looking at it, the CVCA is a two piece upper / lower setup, and in my mind (reality?) is plastic, which potentially (?) could break (I suppose) upon removal for the oil pump job...

Looks like I need to do some more homework and prepare for my next adventure!

Funny thing is, I didn't even realize that there was this belt, until I read this thread! I love this forum!

There are just too many to list....
The oil leak is from the front sealing flange, which is plastic. The seal is integral with it. Sometimes you may see the oil level sensor seal leak, but usually it is just the flange leaking and the oil slowly seeps down through the soft sound deadening inside the plastic lower pan cover and ends up coming out around the level sensor opening.

I've never seen it to be a big volume, and so long as the lower engine shield is properly in place, rarely results in much if any drips finding their way to the ground.

I was hoping that at some point, someone in the aftermarket would have come up with a proper aluminum front sealing flange for the EA288, but here we are a decade later and nobody has. So I was always reluctant to do these just to put another junk piece of plastic back on. But if someone complains, or if it is leaking enough at timing belt time, I'll go ahead and do them. It's a big job just because you're doing TWO oil pans instead of one, both of which are held on with just sealant. So lots of time to clean everything up.

I've never bent a lower pan getting it off, but I have the proper tool for that:

2015 Passat SEL,
Just completed an oil pump and belt replacement on a 2015 Passat CVCA. Alldata indicated that you have to remove both lower and upper oil pans. This is incorrect. Job was a tough one for me as I'm 63 and slowing down more than I care to admit. One design flaw that is nearly as stupid as the belt driven pump is that the bolts entering the front oil seal housing from the oil pan enter from below, This requires removal of the bottom stamped steel oil pan to access these bolts. Although in my case I had to remove it anyway to replace the pump.

This needlessly complicates things for those who simply want to replace the front seal/housing and oil pump drive belt. My impression after looking inside the old oil pump was that pump replacement was good for peace of mind only. It looked new.

The Passat has 235K miles. Engine was as clean inside as the day it left the factory and still has excellent compression.
I'm planning to do just the oil pump belt, and front seal.
Q: Do both upper and lower oil pans need to be removed, or can just the lower pan be removed to do belt?

thanks

People have said every other tb change unless the front crank seal in that housing is leaking, which supposedly necessitates the lower oil pan to be removed, but I watched video on Youtube of someone changing that seal housing on a 1.6 TDI with the oil pan still on, but not sure if you can change the oil pump belt with the oil pan on. Hopefully Oilhammer can impart some knowledge here....
Hi, I'm in the process of a TB change along with camshaft & front crankshaft oil seals replacement on my 2015 CRUA with a 2 sections oil pan. Is someone could confirm if we could replace the oil pump belt without removing the upper aluminum oil pan section ? There is a little gap but is it enough ? I'd like to get away from removing the top section if possible. 120k miles. Tks
