Thought some of the gang might like to know.
VW in Oakville,Ontario is having a sale on oil filters. These prices are in CDN funds.
Buy 3 and get the 4th one free.
The TDI A4 filters normally costs about $19.00. The sales person lowered the price to approx. $14.00 each so 4 filters costs about $43.00 plus taxes.
Also on the counter of the parts department they have disassembled a VW,CDN Tire and Fram filter. Quite the difference in quality.
Can't beet the original VW filters especially at this price.

Do they have a website or at least a 800 number? Do they accept international (US) credit card orders? If your price information is correct I could probably buy 4 or 8 filters, pay for shipping and still come out ahead

Perhaps I should raise my prices, since I'm selling the factory OEM filter cartridges that fit A-4 TDI's for only $8.50 each.

Nah, don't raise your prices . . . at least not until I put up a lifetime supply

Seriously, Steve, I get a couple more free filters from the stealer (if they actually change them), but I'm always looking for a deal. It's not like oil filters are perishable. What do you sell besides the filters and Amsoil products?

You can respond here or e-mail dante@attorney-cpa.com. I've been meaning to buy some more Amsoil Cetane Boost anyway.

Interesting, the perceived superior quality of the VW ones... It'd be worthwhile to establish who actually makes them, certainly not VW!
I always thought Fram were OK - used them here for years, and they supply most of the major manufacturers here, but maybe the Fram production quality there is different. Anyone know?

The ones to avoid were always those own-brand ones you can buy in French supermarkets - reckoned to be made of cotton wool + paper hankies!

Dealer margins on such items are usually astronomical, especially if billed as part of a service that you're being invoiced for!

Since VW prices are usually on the high side I was actually happy to receive a good deal on the filters..therefore the post.

Importing from the US to Canada can get very pricey with the border fee's...sorry Turbo Steve.

Oakville VW's # is (905) 844-3285...sorry no 1-800 #.

For those TDI'ers living in the Baltimore/DC area, you can get factory oil filter cartridges that fit A-4 TDI's for only $6.67 each at Heritage VW.

Turbo Steve,

$43.00 CDN for 4 filters is cheaper than your $8.50 USD each.

8.50 * 4 = 34.00 USD

Convert that 34.00 to CDN...

34.00 * 1.5 = 51.00

Add 7%GST (applied to any cross border shipment over $20)

51.00 * 1.07 = 54.57

And, I haven't added Shipping or brokerage fees. ($30.00 for UPS, or $5.00 for Post Office)

So, we would pay minimum of $54.57 for 4 filters from you, versus 49.45 CDN(after Provincial Sales Tax and GST are added) for the 4 filters from the VW dealership in Oakville.

Or, the other way (Per filter in USD), 43.00 CDN for 4 filters works out to 10.75 CDN per filter.

At $0.65 USD per $1.00 CDN exchange rate...

10.75 * 0.65 = $6.98 USD per filter.

BUY LOCAL!

I have the A-3 Jetta and cut open several filters just for kicks. I tried a Fram, the local (and VW.parts.com) filter, the Auto Zone Deusch (or something) and the stock VW filter. There was quite a difference in filtration materials between the filters. Least available filtering was the Fram filters which I have used in every car I have ever owned. I thought they were the best, but they are the least! The VW filter had more material folded up and also had larger and more holes for the oil to pass through in the center. The vw easily had 50% more fabric to filter the oil. I had been buying the others to save money, but to me it appears the VW filter is far superior to any other. The fabric was also much stronger and harder to tear off the filter. A real bonus of you've ever seen a filter that had come apart and littered the engine with paper!
For my money, it's the VW filter.
