any difference between a 1.6D oil filter and a 1.9TDI oil filter? I have a couple left over MANN filters from my old rabbit diesel. The MANN web site lists different part numbers but when you pull up the specs they both seem the same.

Maybe the only thing I can think of is maybe a micro rating, which I didn't find.

AFAIK they are the same, just be sure that the 1.6 filter is not much longer than the TDI filter as there isn't at much clearance between the filter flange and the front subframe.

that was the only difference I've noted so far...the older 1.6 filter looks a little longer. maybe an inch at the most. who wouldn't want an extra inch? LOL

There are just too many to list....
The older ones were a little larger, and then there is an even BIGGER one. I find clearance issues on some of them, and as Abacus said if the front mount is spent it won't go in at all.

I actually started using the newer slightly smaller one on my '91 at about 130k miles, as it was just an easier fit.

Some brands seem a little different than others on size, though. And many of the cheapo brands will just list the smaller (gasoline) one. I only use Mann myself.

The Mann number is W840/2, and that is what we use on all the 1Z/AHU TDIs (what it is originally specified for), then we also use it on all the longitudinal 1.8t engines (per VW tsb), any older IDI VAG diesels, and we also use it on any of the FWD longitudinal V6s... it is a little longer but it fits. Heck, I even use that same filter on my Type 4 air cooled engines.

What is the filter micron rating for them. A bugger filter that has a larger advertised micron rating might not be worth it...

well, actually the 1.9 filter I had was a Bosch and was shorter than the MANN 1.6 filter I had.

but when I removed the old 1.9 filter is was the same length as new MANN 1.6 filter....it's entirely possible it was also a MANN ( i didn't remember to check the brand and it was pretty dirty anyway)...

either way my leftover 1.6 filter is now installed.....

I have both a 1.6 and a 1.9tdi. What I have noticed is that the 1.6 filters are just slightly larger. The difference is small, but large enough that is a pain to get them in and out of the 1.9tdi. At the dealer, I think the part numbers are the same except for the last letter (1.9tdi ends in E).
Several VW people have told me that the filters are identical except for the outside diameter. So, if it fits, use it.

I use the bigger 1.6d filters on my AHU. They work just fine. Yes they are larger in diameter and it does make oil changes a little more messy. Usually I'll puncture a hole in the bottom of the filter with a phillips screwdriver to let the oil drain out. 5 or 10 minutes later, use a shop towel to unscrew the filter. It has to come out in such a way that it would spill out the top of the filter if you don't drain it. The extra capacity is nice. The Bosch 72174 is my favorite filter, made in Germany and is every bit as good as a Mann at about half the price.... but of course, use the Manns you have first.

What's the manufacturer and model of the 1.8t filter you use?
OE number for the AHU (and assume 1Z) was 068115561E, which a slightly smaller filter.

About a year ago I noticed that parts houses were listing the older larger 068115561B as an 'uprade' for the 'E' application because it was larger capacity.

The 068115561B is from the 80's 1.6D/TD engine. Now all I run is the 'B' part number. They're more easily obtained and they cost less than the 'E' filter and they're larger capacity. Also, it works on both the Fox D and the Jetta tdi.

I mostly buy the Mann filters but Mahle would be a good choice too.
