This is the OFFICIAL list of high pressure fuel pump failures for the 2.0L VW common rail TDI engines (Engine codes CBEA and CJAA).

This engine has been featured in the 2009-2011 VW Jetta sedan, 2009-2011 VW Jetta/Golf SportWagen, and 2010-2011 Golf in the US / Canadian markets. This engine may have been featured in other vehicles in other markets. Though we do invite and encourage particpation from everyone worldwide, the primary audience of this forum is made up of people in the US and Canada. If your vehicle outside of the US or Canada with this engine has experienced a failure of the high pressure fuel pump, please share your experience and state what country you are posting from.

Fuel system failures of the 6 cyilinder 3.0L V6 common rail TDI featured in the Audi Q7 and VW Touraeg are not covered in this thread and should be posted in the appropriate forum.

This is not a thread for discusison on this issue. It is merely a list and is to be used as a reference. Posts contaning anything BUT reports of a failure will be deleted.

Please use the following format when posting a failure incident:

Year:
Build Date:
Make/Model:
Tranny: DSG, 6M
Mileage: (actual miles at time of problem or when problem began)
Diesel Fuel Source: (Shell, Exxon, etc.)
Additives: (Yes/No)
Problem: (HPFP failed, fuel canister rusted, etc. Give as much factual data as you can.)
Dealer: (ex. SmokeAndMirrors VW or VW of Fallacy Idaho)
Status: (still pending, dealer fixed everything, resolved, dealer refused, paid out of pocket)

This is now the place to post if you personally have had a failure! Please use the "edit" function on your post if you wish to update your post with status of your repair. (i.e. You dropped it off, and then find out that VW will be participating in the repair a few days after your initial post.) This thread is for reports of failures on vehicles for which you own. Please do not post "hearsay" reports - i.e. "my neighbor's car died." or "I saw a TDI at my dealership and the service manager says...." The posting of these types of expereinces only serves to challenge the integrity of this list.

This thread is a compilation of the two threads started by MacBuckeye and Silver02TDI. Consolidating this information makes it easier for the public to find and access. Major thanks go out to the two afforementioned members who started the original threads.

This is not a thread for discusison on this issue. It is merely a list and is to be used as a reference. Posts contaning anything BUT reports of a failure WILL BE DELETED!!!!

Diesel Fuel Source: Varied, drove 8000 miles cross-country. Locally, mostly Citgo, Hess, Sunoco. Fuel before failure was Sunoco.
Additives: None
Problem: Sudden no-start. Fuel system had no corrosion or metal. Glow plug wet in one cylinder. VW tech line suspected low fuel pressure from HPFP. Confirmed with measurements, and replaced pump.
Dealer: Burdick VW Syracuse
Status: Fixed under warranty. Bad fuel not suspected. Good dealership experience - the tech who worked on my car was a TDI owner and enthusiast. No problems so far 4500 miles later.

Build Date: don't know exact but estimate 1Q2009
Make/Model: Jetta Sportwagen TDI
Tranny: 6M
Mileage: just over 17K
Diesel Fuel Source: Too many sources. Did multi-state road trip, etc. Narrowing selection now.
Additives: No
Problem: MIL (check engine) light came on but noticed no loss of power or function. Took car to dealer. They told me they found metal shavings in the tank, bad fuel with water present, and corrosion around the fuel filter. Called back and told me that they would be replacing the entire fuel system tank and all under warranty. Told me that the shop foreman had seen "a few" similar problems and they gave me no hassle about warranty. Admitted HPFP failed, but seem to believe that bad fuel is the primary issue. Talked to them about additives - they were on the fence but one tech who was in the service area said Stanadyne couldn't hurt and that he uses it in older models. Asked them if they think this will be a recurring problem with Bosch HPFP part and they were clueless. Bottom line they handled it well but I don't think I've seen the end of this issue.
Dealer: Momentum VW/Audi Houston TX
Status: Fixed in under a week with free loaner under warranty no hassle. Expect I'll be back in another 17K when it happens again.

Year:09
Build Date: not sure (still at dealer)

Make/Model:Wagon TDI Manual trans
Tranny: DSG, 6M
Mileage: 21,???
Diesel Fuel Source: USA Gasoline
Additives: (No
Problem: (HPFP failed.... Driving last Monday, Engine Malfunction light came on and then went off. Glow plug light continued to blink. Stopped (at baseball field, probably 100 yds after lights went on)
Left for evening, no light, very faint noise in engine. Drove 50 yds and battery light came on. Stopped and car died. Cranked up and into reverse for 10 feet, died and wouldn't crank.
Towed to dealer next morning. Capital Eurocar in Tallahassee. First call they told me I put gas in the Diesel engine. I told them I had put fuel in 3 days prior and driven over 150 miles.
Called that afternoon to say they were putting some sort of fuel sensor in the following day.
Called the next afternoon to say it was put in but didn't fix the problem. Said they had a similar problem 8 to 10 months ago with another car. Told VW engineers would not be available till following week (that was Thursday) I was given a loner VW Routan at that time.
Called Monday afternoon and told there were metal shavings in the fuel. I asked where they came from and was told that the VW engineers wouldn't say. I was told they were going to replace the gas tank and many other parts and that it should be ready by Wed or Thursday (22-23 of April), unless all the parts weren't available.

Dealer: Capital Eurocar Tallahassee, FL
Status: still pending

At this point I have read alot of posts and am afraid this is not the end of this problem. I have 3 boys and worry about reliability. Any thoughts? And what questions should I be asking the dealer?
thanks!

I thought a nice list summarizing every failure reported here could maybe be useful to some people here for myriad reasons. I'll use the following format:

User:
Car:
Location:
Build Date:
Failure Date:
Mileage: (at time of failure)
Failed HFPF Part Number: (try and get this at the dealership - see sample below)
Failed HFPF Build Date: (see sample below)
New HFPF Part Number:
New HFPF Build Date:
Outcome: (Warranty, insurance, or out-of-pocket?)
Link to Thread

This is a sample a member posted of his HFPF part number(s) and build date

BOSCH 011
0 445 010 508
CR/CP4S1/R35/20
03L 130 755 A
01 170809 <- supplier (?), date of production (ddmmyy)
BPT0442
0007

This list is the product of many people's contributions, and they are all appreciated! Please post if you see more failure threads, and I'll update the list. Also, for those of you in the US, please report your failure to NHTSA. Then the issue can get more attention like it has in the article posted here: http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=292279

One last note: This thread is for listing failures only, not for discussions. Moderators regularly do housekeeping here to keep discussion out of it. Thanks.

Problem: After 20 perfect months and 55k trouble-free miles, including two trips from San Diego to south Texas and several other long trips, suddenly there was a slight hesitation, some highpitched metalic tinkling noise, then Eng.light, and blinking glowplug light. Then info center says Failure / Workshop. Still running fine. Drove to next errand (few blocks) shut down, came back 5 minutes later, started fine, no lights, all's well. Half mile later same scenario. Decided to drive straight to dealer approx 5 miles. After a mile, it acted as if the turbo boost had stopped. Felt like my old '82 Vanagon diesel! Ran fine but no power. Drove otherwise normally to dealer. Started once there (with difficulty), then later had to be pushed off the service island. I am told it never started again.
Dealer: Drew VW (big Ford dealer since 1926)
Status: On June 29, 26 days after the failure, the car was declared "done" and I picked it up. Happy to say it turned out good as new. The dealer worked out a price considerably less than the full pop. I still had to pay, let's say enough so that if applied to my fuel bill reduces my MPG to about 19. So much for economy. I have a 'new' 12mo/12k warranty on the job. Every part having to do with the fuel system from the tank forward is new. Let's hope for the best.

Problem: Car failed with half a tank of fuel (Wed. June 2). Towed to dealer. Told first that it was a broken fuel pressure sensor. They had car for the weekend. Monday we were told there was contaminated fuel. My husband tested diesel at his work for specific gravity and I can't remember the numbers, but it was most definitely diesel, not gas. I called Bureau of Weights and Measures. They went out to test fuel from station, no contamination found. Dealer drained engine & refueled, car wouldn't start. They sent diesel sample out to Seattle (!) for testing on Wed. June 9. As of June 15 there has been no response. I talked to them yesterday and explained - nicely - that the contaminated fuel theory just doesn't well, hold water, and asked if they were aware of the HPFP failures. I was told that the contaminated fuel theory was valid because the "little diesel engine they put in cars cannot take any gasoline, unlike larger diesel engines, like they put in trucks." Conclusion: car has been in the dealer for 2 weeks with 2 misdiagnoses. We will wait for fuel test results, ask for a written report. In a perfect world, they will step up and fix the problem. If not, we will move the car to a dealer recommended to us by a TDI mechanic and hop on the merry-go-round again.

Status: Today is Day 13. It seems this is my dealer's first experience with the HPFP issue. Since they diagnosed a blown pump, they ordered one and installed it without first calling the Help Desk. Had they called they may have been warned about what to expect from a failed pump, such as shrapnel blown throughout the system requiring replacement of everything to the tune of $11,000, a price which has been quoted many times in this forum! The new pump got the engine running, but very poorly, so they called Help Desk and was told to check the filter. Upon finding 'particles' the answer is the now familiar $11k "replace everything" scenario. But, it's out of warranty, and I'm certainly not paying 1/2 the original base price of the car to fix it when there is ample evidence to show this is a mfg design defect.

The bottom line is, "VW" knows of the problem but it would seem they have not sent out a service letter to dealers and nothing definitive has been decided what to do about it. Seems to me that the options for a solution could include a 10/100k extended warranty on the fuel system, a redesign of the pump, or ultimately cancelling the 4 cylinder TDI production until redesigned. This problem is not isolated and is not going away. A big issue with this whole thing is the outrageous prices of parts, such as $3,000 for a set of fuel injectors, but that's another topic. Nuff for now.
wait a minute, i thought these were covered under powertrain warranty???

"Rusted" Cannister/Replace entire fuel system

Year: 2010
Build Date: 3/09
Make/Model: JSW
Tranny: DSG, 6M
Mileage: 6,400
Diesel Fuel Source: Variety of big names
Additives: No
Problem: MIL light won't go off, occasional Glo Plug, lack of acceleration at times. They replaced fuel pressure sensor. MIL comes back on soon. Next time fault code for Fuel Pressure Low. They noted fuel level is low at time. MIL stays on. Back in a month later. They find a nicely rusted cannister and "Recommend replacing every component in fuel system." Today I decided to try the dealer where I bought it. I knew about the reflashing from these threads, and that's what they did "Recall Campaign. Reflashed system." Picked up the car, and started to find MIL on! They hook it back up to HAL, and mumbled something about needing another part, something about a fuel sensor or "thrusher", and I'll return on Monday.
Dealer: Scoville, Corvallis, OR.
Status: "Pending." VWoA refused to cover under warranty bc of contaminated fuel (haven't asked for the evidence yet). Spoke with Regional Rep--same answer. Filed case with NHTSA online. Hoping that second shop will come through.
As of 9/10, Farmer's Ins. has decided to foot the $9K bill. I still am waiting to hear from VW after receiving an initial letter from a claims rep requesting more information. I'm in the "they're getting back to me" phase.
Update:
Repairs done ($9K--15,000 miles). I'll get parts info later (anyone want to buy a used fuel tank :) I have a hearing with the BBB Auto online, but they do not arbitrate insurance settlements. I hope I can testify from some other angle (since I think Farmers shouldn't have to pay the bill.)

Problem: HPFP failed, in traffic while climbing the Grapevine just North of Los Angeles. Started to lose power and all of a sudden the engine just stopped. Extremely dangerous situation to where I was on the side of the freeway with vehicles whizzing by at high rates of speed.
Dealer: Valencia VW
Status: At dealer for 2 1/2 weeks now due to them saying the parts have to arrive from Germany.

This report is from a good customer of mine who lives in the Pasadena,CA area. I just repaired his NB TDI and I asked his permission to post this on his behalf. I told him to please report this to NHSTA and he said he absolutely will do so.

I actually warned this customer to hold off on the purchase back nearly 2 years ago however, it was already too late because he had already pulled the trigger.

I truly think this issue is extremely huge and going to get worse and worse as time goes on. Words can't explain how critical it is for people to report this to NHSTA. Later!

How often has this happened? Got in the car Wednesday and the satellite radio display read "Linking" but no sound. I have the basic satellite radio in my 09 JSW. No navigation upgrade.

Dropped by my dealer Thursday and the service advisor said to bring it in Friday morning and they'd look at it. They called after about 2 hours Friday morning and said the receiver was bad and they'd had to replace it. Everything fine now. At least I found out where the receiver is located. (underneath passenger seat)

Has this occurred often?

Been a TDI lurker since I bought the car in Oct 2008. Figured time for me to throw my Jetta on the pile of HPFP failures.

Car: 2009 Jetta TDI Automatic
Location: California
Build Date: Unknown
Failure Date: 10/26/2010
Mileage: 56k
Fuel: Mostly Shell
Additives: never
Outcome: So far dealer is covering the cost except the battery they said was bad.

Details:
Car shut down at 55 mph going up hill with no warning and no dashlights. Failed to restart. Flatbed to dealer. They said battery shot. Battery replaced. Still won't start. Dealer said tank fuel pump failed. Tank fuel pump replaced. Still won't start. Dealer said HPFP failed. HPFP replaced. Still won't start. Dealer said common rail is bad. Common rail replaced. Still won't start. Dealer said other fuel lines bad. Fuel lines replaced. Still won't start. as of 11/4/2010.

Dealer scratching head still and talking to VW techs someplace. Even after I pointed them at this known issue. Opened up a NHTSA report since the car shut off so quickly with no warning and I could not move to the shoulder.

I will try to get part numbers.

Cheers

Diesel Fuel Source: Shell 80%, BP 10%, Others 10%
Additives: recently started using Stanadyne Lubricity Formula
Problem: During 40K service, the dealer/service tech noted that the fuel filter canister was rusted.
Dealer: Checkered Flag VW, Virginia Beach
Status: Vehicle was repaired under warranty: "Defective fuel injection pump. Performed GFF. Found fault P0191 Fuel Pressure Sensor, G247 Implausible Signal. Upon inspection of fuel filter, found rust in housing. Opened VTA ticket #xxxxxx. Replaced complete fuel system with the exception of line from tank to front of vehicle, which I cleaned as per techline."

I dropped the car off today for it's 40K service. Two hours later the SR called and said that there is rust in the fuel filter and other components of the system. He's supposed to call VOA on Monday to see what's going to happen.

Problem: HPFP failed badly (see link below for description)
http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=297793&page=5
Dealer: Demontrond VW Houston Texas
Status: Still pending, fuel system parts ordered, VW testing fuel prior to repair. So far dealer is being cool and saying they are aware of the problem elsewhere.

Got the car back on Thursday morning (6 days from towing car to dealer with HPFP failure). Dealer (Demontrond Houston) said this is the 2nd TDI he has seen with this problem (don't know if this meant 2009-2011 engine or 2011 only...if you want I'll call back and ask....the service rep is cool). Below is an itemized list of repairs and hours to complete the repairs. After completing the repairs they said they "primed system and ran for several hours - test driven - no faults generated". Drove the car approximately 100 miles today and no issues.

List of repairs: Hours....Job(part item)

1) 0.40....Prep and Package Fuel Sample
2) 0.30....Replace Fuel Filter Assembly
3) 0.40....Replace Fuel Tank
4) 0.40....Replace Electrical Pump
5) 1.10....Clean and Flush Return Fuel Lines
6) 1.10....Clean and Flush Supply Fuel Lines
7) 1.90....R&I Fuel Tank (R&I?)
8) 0.30....Replace Supply Line
9) 1.30....Replace Pressure Regulating Valve Assembly
10) 1.30....Replace Distribution Rail
11) 2.50....Replace High Pressure Fuel Pump - Bosch
12) 2.50....Replace Fuel Injectors
13) 0.10....RTO (?)
14) 0.50....GFF (great-friends-forever charge?)
15) 1.00....Tech Check/Inspection.

That's all I got. Still love the car. Hope everything is cool. Texas Lemon Laws are awesome and if it fails again, I'll trade it for another TDI.

Problem: In for 20k mile checkup and dealer found metal flakes in the fuel system.
Dealer: Dean Team VW of Ballwin, MO
Status: Just diagnosed today. Dealer has car and says they will be replacing everything fuel related. Repairs are supposed to be finished this week. Love my dealership so far as they immediately put my wife in a suitable car and they have been great on previous encounters.

UPDATE:
Dealer called today and said that they think it was "just" some rust in the fuel filter which they replaced, and not the pump. They said, without prompting, that they've had 1 pump replacement before and they were worried this was the same thing. After investigating, they determined it's just the filter right now. Be assured I will be keeping all diesel receipts going forward. I'm also glad we got the extended warranty as we've put 20k in miles since March.

Tranny: 6M

Diesel Fuel Source: Shell at home, on road mostly Shell. BP in the tank when it failed
Additives: (Yes/No) no
Problem: no problems, just returned from 750 mile round trip. Filled with BP ULSD at half tank. Previous was Murphy station. All Shell for 10 receipts before that. 25 miles after return flashing glow plug, wife was near an exit and able to limp off freeway while cars whizzed past. Towed to dealer.
Dealer: Boucher VW Franklin Wisconsin
Status: Still pending after they held up a coke bottle filled with "funny colored" Diesel fuel (my sample from tank was not funny colored) stating that means it will not be covered by VW. No testing done yet. Have called VWoA, filed with NHSTA. Last 2 fillups stations told about "contamination" they report no other complaints. Holding off on Attorney General and BBB etc until I hear from VWoA. Am already warning everyone I know, getting many horror stories from coworkers etc of VW weaseling out of warranty work. Too bad. Great car...but I don't trust this car anymore...not to mention VW
