Yeah, i knew about the project, didn't know how to sponsor, looking forward to see it come together

It's got the miata community in an uproar

How many semesters do they think it will take to do all this?

Back in my day, if we wanted extra funding for project's we would put in the effort and raise the money with creative efforts.

This project will have to take years to finish. The students that started it will be long gone. I d
Don't see how this could be beneficial to the students if they don't see the results of their work. Better off if they would just rebuild the existing car to factory spec and sell it but even that would take a long time. A '90 Miata that spent all it's life up here will have substantial rust issues (my father had one imported from FL and withing a few years in was rotten). That alone will take a couple of semesters to fix. Another thing to consider is, who in their right mind will want to buy a car that was "repaired" by a bunch of highschool students?

When I had automotive classes in high school, we could work on projects after class sometimes...when we had supervision from our teacher. During class time, we were being taught the curriculum and then had shop work to do for the remaining time of class.

I agree, this won't be a quick project.

if the kids are big on this project it won't take long for the swap

i'd imagine they would do it after school, i know we did when we were working on our electric car projects

Is the build being done by the students or Pistonhead Productions? I'd only support if the students are doing the build.

I agree this is an ambitious project, in my High School project we did a similar engine swap and it took the entire semester including evenings and the odd weekend (our teacher was very supportive) that project was a 455 olds motor in a jeep with one ton axles. The current shop teacher has indicated one month to build the car. The one benefit is my middle daughter will be starting this program next year and has the skills and motivation to move it forward.

From what I read, the school is not doing the build. They will be start to finish in 48 hrs. The money raised is going to the school.

What are we doing?

We are building a diesel powered, Mazda Miata, drift car, then drifting it, then selling it. All of the money raised from the sale, plus any money donsted over the cost of the build will be given to a local highschool shop class to help inspire more auto enthusiasts like us! The part that isn't plain, or simple, is that we will be building this monstrosity in a mere 48 hours or less. You may be asking yourself "How is that even possible?" Well, with a little help from our friends. We have assembled a small team and will be locking ourselves in a shop for two straight days, only leaving to get supplies and pick up pizza. When the dust settles, we will have a beast of a tire slayer to take to events all over North America.

Too bad - if the students were building it, I`d donate. I`m not going to donate to some profiting company with the promise of a donation after they make their TV fame and cash. The school is the mule for them to get what they want.

I thing this group has misunderstood this project. It is the school with the budget and have the car and will be doing the build. It is the shop teacher with the project, Pistonhead production is just doing the fund raising for the school.

I worked on our electric car in high school after hours also.I even drove it as I was the lightest.

We had mentors apart from the school and it was a really fun project as it was the first year that our school had entered the competition.Dry ice was used to cool the motor, ammeter to keep an eye on,I would disengage the motor/belt drive then coast downhill. When the car slowed I would turn the motor back on and engage the drive.

The students will do the bodywork and the swap in 2 days?

either way the money is going to the school Shop class, which is an honorable charity in my books

Update, the high school kids sent me a picture on Friday. This beast is done and already has one event under their belt. It looks great with about a foot of motor, intercooler and rad above the hood line.
