The dealers have huge markups with limited discounts. While the aftermarket has many levels of sales. That being said the aftermaket may not tool up for a limited production vehicle which I consider TDIs to be, say compared to Corollas [gas]. They will often buy from the OE manufactures and rebox, VW does not manufacture for the most part they outsource and assemble. Some parts are not available other than the dealer under agreement with the manufacture. In short do your home work. Ask to see the aftermarket product. Look for the country of origin, its the law to be labeled. You might often to pleasently suprised. For example a Mahnn filter in a Group 7 box OE.

OEM is Original Equipment Manufacturer.

You can buy aftermarket OEM parts.

you just pay extra for the same part, in VW packaging, and maybe some VW logos on the part.

For example, do you also insist on getting oil filters or fuel filters from the dealership? Or do you say, buy a oil filter or fuel filter made by Mann, in Mann packaging? (and Mann is one of the suppliers to VW)

You should ask your retailer, who makes the coolant temp sensor.

OE parts found @ VAG dealers

OEM parts are Ate, Bosch, Hengst, Hitachi, Mahle, Mann, Nippon-Denso, Pagid, TRW etc. buy from independent retailers - superior quality equal or exceed OE specs

OEM/Aftermarket parts - no such things

Aftermarket parts - parts found at Autozone etc. - inferior quality - don't touch with a ten foot pole

Not always the case!

There is no cut and dry statement for this topic.

Oh yeah there is. And I know so.

OE parts are manufactured by the OEM companies per OE specs. Sometimes OEM companies designed the parts also per OE specs.

Only OE parts are installed in the production cars. The same OE parts are sold through the dealers. Dealers don't sell OEM, Aftermarket, but OE parts only.

No OEM and/or aftermarket parts are installed in the production cars. NONE what so ever.

Go to the dealer and check under the hood of a brand new car, see if Autozone brand air, fuel, and oil filters, battery, brake pads etc installed in the car.
