not really....
all you need to do is pop out the cupholders/blank plate and get the hazard wire harness out from there....
or just drag it out from under the steering wheel....

Mine does the same thing Boostdit... With the car running, and hazards on, when you turn them off, it blinks in the direction opposite to which you last selected. If you last made a left turn for instance, it will blink right. =)

Mine is the splice version, but I assume this is an issue within the relay, and possibly from piggybacking two relays.

I have not had any problem with my non-splice "blinky-thing" mod.

Turn signals work properly before and after using the hazards. I tested by doing the following:

Engine Off:
Turned hazards on for ~one minute. Started engine with hazards blinking.

Engine On:
Turned hazards off; turned on right hand turn signal. Made turn; signal shut off.

Turned on left turn signal; made turn; signal shut off.

No additional blinks of any kind.

Received my 2 PNP kits today.

Installed the first one in the wifes NB this afternoon.

Just as a note: The 27 pages of instructions do not include NB specific ones.

Not that you really need NB specific instructions but it turns out, (of course), that the NB hazard switch is slightly different than the Jetta/Passat.

The NB has an extra wire that the instructions don't mention and the number 6 & 7 wires in the instructions are actually wires 5 & 6 in the NB connector.

None of this makes the installation more difficult. You just have to pay attention to the wire colors instead of just going by the numbers on the connectors.

It took me about 1/2 hour to install but that was because I couldn't find my wire removal tool but once I found it the installation went relatively quickly.

A plus with the NB is that there is no problem with locating the new relay as there is plenty of space behind the switch pod for you to stuff all the additional connectors and wire and relay. :D

My installation notes

I installed the no-splice version in my 2004.5 Jetta GLI last night. It went pretty well considering this is the first time I've really dove into an electronics project.

First of all, I definitely had to pull the radio (double DIN Monsoon) There is no way the relay would fit through the opening for any of the switches or the "cupholder door." Also, there just wasn't enough service loop on the harness for the hazard switch to pull it very far out of the opening. I ended up pulling all the switches (blank:ESP:hazard:defrost:blank) and working the harness out the radio slot. Be careful when pulling the switches, even though you can get at the back and push them out, it's not a good idea. I popped off one of the metal spring clips on the ESP switch when I pushed from the back and it disappeared into the abyss. Switch works fine with only one though.

Speaking of the cupholder door, if you have the aluminum trim on it, it only swings open about 45 degrees. There's enough room to get in there and release the clip, don't force it any further.

Pulling the contacts is no fun at all. I used a heavy staple on either side of the catch and used those as a guide to make sure I caught the catch with a straightened paperclip in the middle on each side. If you've never done it before, practice with the contacts and connector supplied on your desk before trying it in sub-optimal conditions in the car.

The wires you pull from positions 2 and 7 are both black/white. Mark the first one you pull so you don't mix them up when you swap them to the new connector.

Other than those lessons learned, it went well.

Now we just need a way to get the one extra wipe after a delay when operating the washers....... any ideas?

I *hated* the "drip catcher" feature on my Saab... it's fine in the summer when you're just rinsing off a dirty/dusty windshield, but it will drive you absolutely mad in road/salt spray conditions in the winter. Spray and wash the windshield while driving... few second pause where a few drops hit the windshield from the car in front... then the delayed wipe and... streaked and blinding windshield... spray again... repeat ad nauseum until car is parked. AAARGH!!!

My Dad got Busted

fwiw, flashing headlights is (or was) a civil violation in some states.
i've only seen one driver get bagged for it - on the mass pike in brighton,
by a mass state cop, about 25 years ago.
My Dad got Busted for this about 2 years ago in Illinois. Driving North on 47, he flashed his lights to a guy who had his brights on. Unfortunately there was a cop right behind the "BRIGHT" driver. He got pulled over.. Took it to court and won.. The judge practically threw it out because it was a BS charge.
Turns out that this and another cop patrol a small community and the only fun they get it to pull over people on a 1 mile section of the highway that runs through their patrol zone.

So back onto topic.. Anyone have a relay part number? I'm sure there is something that can be substituted.. I can look up a comparable part in Digikey, do a little soldering and maybe come up with a cheaper kit..

000 953 227 for non-splice relay.

I installed mine last night on my 2004 R32. I added the cupholders back in (US models didn't have them), and I have an OEM Navi. Needless to say, it was a tight fit. The cupholders don't slide out as easily now, I need to adjust the harness.

Anyway, this is the non-splice version, I'm running into an issue. The "flash to pass" feature works fine, but when I actually use the turn signal, I get an additional blink or two when I turn them off. Push the stalk down, signal goes on, push it up to "neutral", and it blinks one or two more times. Absolutely infuriating.

Has anyone else run into this? Do I have a bad unit?

The MkV's and the B6 Passat do the same thing. The turn signal will finish cycling before it shuts off. It won't cutoff mid blink like the standard turnsignals do.

Is there a set number of signals in a cycle?

If it's supposed to do that, but it's undocumented, I'll be ripping that thing out of my car immediately. It's not something I like at all.

Mine does the same thing. It's a relay and isn't that sophisticated.

hi! oh, sorry for that misunderstanding that the subject was high beams.
back onto the right subject now:
this 3-flashes-blinker thing is awful.
if there is a way for me to trade my 06.5's 3-flashing-relay with an older relay that doesn't flash, I'd do it in a jiffy as long as it didn't involve any shredding of the dashboard.

You can disable the feature with VAGCOM on Mark V chassis cars (or in the Comfort menu on the dash if you have the full height dash display).

The factory relay for the Mark IV retrofit is set at three blinks (not adjustable)

The aftermarket Komfortblinker B3 from Germany is programmable from 3 to 5 blinks.

http://www.zusatzinstrumente.de/htm/b3/prod.htm

Works a treat - 4 is just right for a lane change.

It is also very compact to install.

You really don't like this feature? I love it. I have it on my '02 and, of course, the A5. The only time it's annoying is if you push the lever and then decide not to change lanes. But in MA no one pays attention to the signals anyway.

Just click on Downloads on the link I gave you.

There is an English manual you can download which describes all the features and installation etc.

yep, the extra flashes really bug me. sometimes one flash is just what i want, but i can't have it without vag-com. i don't like software controlling the transmission either!
and right you are about MA people ignoring signals!

Hi,

Just to add my two cents worth, the OEM no splice version retails for 49.00 USD at TMTuning... I'm sure you could set up a group buy with the guys over there and come up with something around 55-60$ with shipping included! I just ordered a kit from there with taillights and some other gizmos and overall shipping came to 41$ so if you order 10 of the kits it will probably come up to the same shipping price (as it probably will be the same shipment size) so 55$ would be the final price or just about!
