So how exactly do these work though? I see the non splicing one and there are 2 connectors on it. One appears to hook up to the car harness in plcae of the hazard switch, the other end goes to the relay and then you have like 4 bar wires with connectors that go into what housing though?

David,

It looks to me like you need to extract the wires from your OEM hazzard switch connector, and put the wires with the OE connectors into that connector.

Then, you take the extracted wires and place them into the two part connector just above this text.

At least that'd be my guess.

I think this one you simply tap or cut and splice into the existing wires to the hazzard switch.

Either way, it's wired the same.

Thanks Lito. The picture I looked at didnt have the spare housing to put the wires into. I am willing to bet you are right on that though.

I've gotta be missing something - why would anyone get the spliced version instead???

I'm likely on board for this as well (x2), but want to make sure I'm clear on the install req'ts.

I think the spliced version is meant to be a "universal" kit/install.

I'm a little confused. So the turn signal will flash 3 times if the stalk is pushed in a certain direction, or pushed a certain amount? Will the blinker continue to flash if the stalk is pushed all the way down or up? I hope that makes sense...

OK, I have 2 questions about this. First one is here:

I did a little research and it sounds like the MKV cars have a "Flash to Pass" feature as well. However, on the MKV it works by pulling back the turn signal stalk, and the headlights flash 3 times. I'm still unsure how this feature works on the MKIV. I ASSume that when you push the stalk up or down the left or right turn signal blinks 3 times instead of just blinking for however long you hold the stalk for. Is that right?

Second question, do all those connectors and relays shown in the kit have a home somewhere in the MKIV dashboard, or do they just have to be zip-tied somewhere?

Thanks for the help!!!

Tim;
Not sure on the MkV stuff, but the MkIV (and most cars) *do* have a high-beam flash, and it is typically activated by pulling the left stalk towards the driver. The high-beams will light up for as long as you hold the stalk in the forward position. I use this feature all the time to notify oncoming drivers at night that their high-beams are on and blinding oncoming traffic, and also to notify transports and buses that they have passed me and can safely merge back into the right lane. However, this is not at all related to the mod being discussed here!!!!

When activating the turn signal to change lanes, you can move the stalk up (right blinker) or down (left blinker) to a half-way point that will activate the blinker for as long as you hold the stalk at that half-way point. This is commonly referred to as the "lane changer position" or "lane changer feature". If you move the stalk all the way up or all the way down to it's clicked position, the blinker may not cancel itself after a lane change, since the steering wheel has not moved through enough of a rotation.

What the mod discussed here does, is add a fixed 3 blinks to the lane changer feature. Going to the half-way point and releasing will cause the blinker to blink 3 times on whichever side you indicated - you will not have to hold the stalk at the half-way point for those extra seconds while making the lane change. You can choose to still hold the stalk at the half-way point if you want more than 3 blinks.

It would be nice if you could "program" the number of blinks... I'd probably prefer 4, or even 5, in most situations.

There should be plenty of room behind the dash, above the radio, for the additional harness. Removing the hazard switch is easy - a thin knife under the edge of the side to gently pry it out, or removing the switches beside the hazard in the same fashion (rear defog, seat heater) will let you reach behind and push the hazard switch out.

Follow the instructions included with the kit. They apply to both the Passat and the Golf IV.

The non-splice version is a little bulky to get back into the dash because of the size of the connectors. But there is enough room back behind and above the radio cage.

Peter, very good point. As you well know, there is not alot of room where the harness for the dash switches are located. The non-splice version connectors are very large and bulky.

I think alot of people are going to have issues with the wire extraction from the OE harness.

Also, you have to cut back the insulation of the OE harness in order to locate the new connector in a place where it will fit. If you don't you end up getting two bulky connectors trying to occupy space right next to one another which doesn't work.

Lito helped me with this at Impex and asked me to post this. Sorry for the delay....

Okay, here goes...

pin 49a, white/green wire splices into T8d/1
pin 49R, green wire splices into T8d/2
pin 49L, white wire splices into T8d/3
pin 31,brown wire splices into T8d/6
pin 15, black/white wire splices into T8d/7

The pin numbers correspond the to Komfort Blinker relay that comes in the kit.....The coloured wires are already attached to the relay holder the comes with the kit. T8d is the connector that the hazard light switch plugs into. The number following T8d/, corresponds to which pin number on the T8d connector. The pin numbers are marked on the connector.

It took Lito and I about an hour to do. Not too bad, and a very useful feature

thanks man
question for you and Lito...
wich version (OEM or Aftermarket) flashes faster
basicly are those 3 blinks faster than a normal blink or same ...do you get my question?

I want to achieve a fast blink on the comfort-blinkers (like you have a bulb out fast) and normal the rest of the times...is it doable?

THe version that I bought comes in an VW box, so I assume that it is the OEM version. When having depressed the turn signal lever, three "normal" speed blinks are flashed. This gives just the right amount of time to execute a pass.............hope that helps

hey ,
having one small issue with mine,
got it done yesterday and today i noticed something funky...
when you turn on the "hazards" with the key off everything is fine...
when you turn them on with key on...then you turn them off...it flashes 3 times in eighter the last direction that you used the comfort-blink or in the direction in wich your steering wheel is turned...very weird...
i have a "J" version hazard switch 2003 car

huh, i have no idea what that's about!

to those who have installed it, does the radio need to come out? what all needs to be taken out in order to wire this up? i'm expecting to have mine by the weekend and would like to get it in... and need to make sure i have all the proper tools..
