Odometer buggered

I finally figured out my odometer is not working correctly. It indicates 3,371 then 3,372 and 3,373, then it falls back to 3,371, and repeats the process. I think the car has about 4,000 miles on it now, judging by the miles until service function. If I report this to the dealer, it will flag the mileage of the car as being unknown. Now I wonder what that will that do to my re-sale value. It will be a negative, for sure but, how negative?

I plan to keep the car but if I am forced to sell it for what ever reason this will impact the value.

If I were looking at purchasing a used car and the mileage was known to be incorrect I would expect a discount. In these days of car fax and such, it will be made known. I hate to take a hit for something that is not my fault. When something is my fault I "man up" but this is different. This might be a legal problem, I think. I would appreciate your best advice. Thanks

Can you somewhat accurately estimate when the problem first occurred and how many miles you have put on it ? The dealer may be able to set the mileage on the new instrument cluster.

If the miles till service function is working correctly, they could probably use that to accurately set the miles on the new cluster.

Also, even though the odometer readout is malfunctioning, there may be an accurate record of cumulative miles stored in the ECU or cluster.
