Have a 2003 Jetta TDI w/88000 mi., until my last state inspection I didn't pay much attention to it. Aren't passenger diesel cars exempt from the emission part of the inspection ? Inspector claims that he just scans the reg.sticker and the car is listed as a gas model, needing the additional test. I plan on having this car for a few more years and with the normal aging of it I don't want to be stuck fixing not needed emission parts. Any help on how to straighten this out with NY State would be great.

I'm not familiar with regulations in your neck of the woods but I would think that the first step would be to have the error on your MV registration corrected. In my area new cars are exempt from emission testing for the first 7 years and a diesel test only measures exhaust opacity (smoke).

Go to the DMV and have it corrected. They will send you a new registration sticker and you should be all set.

Ditto. The DMV did my registration wrong the first time also and listed me as a G instead of a D for engine type... TDIs are exempt from the emissions test, which also makes for a faster and cheaper inspection. Isn't it ironic that there's a law banning the sales of new TDIs in NY for "emissions" reasons, but that they're ultimately exempt from any emissions testing?

Since the new rules went into effect as of MY 2004 diesel cars, it's not that ironic. Besides, why waste time testing a vehicle which you know won't meet the new specs?

Going to the DMV office on Tuesday, should be fun ! How much of a hassle did they give you to switch the reg. to Diesel ?

For me, zero. I realized the mistake soon after I bought the car and because it was not my fault (it was the either the mistake of the person filling out the registration form or a data entry error) I was helped almost immediately. They gave me a new sticker and I was on my way.

NYSI for passenger diesels

I've had the same problem in Onondaga County - every year for the past several and as recently as last week. Fortunately, I have a contact at NYSDMV in charge of the inspections program for a portion of upstate NY.

Turns out there are two codes on our registration sticker that can be scanned. If you scan the top code, it will show up as a gas regardless of how it's registered, and you'll be charged $21 ($10 for safety, $11 for emissions).
If you scan the bottom code, it should show up as a diesel if it's registered as a diesel, you'll be charged ($10 for safety).

I've mentioned this confusion to my DMV contact, and it appears there needs to be some education of Inspection Stations. Email me with the Name, Location, and County of the shop you had issues with. I'll add it to the list I'm forwarding to my DMV contact.

Diesels are SAFETY ONLY here in NY... It's up to the INSPECTOR to make sure the right fuel code is selected after the registration is scanned so the vehicle gets a proper inspection... I'm a state inspector I do this crap every day... You scan the TOP of the reg... Then the model info comes up, you select the model and push ENTER, enter the mileage and push ENTER, enter the mileage again and push ENTER.. One of the next ones down is the FUEL CODE... You can change it... You're supposed to change it if it's not correct.. The computer will ask you ARE YOU SURE.. Hit YES.. Done...

You can also go to DMV and have them correct the registration because they probably didn't see the little box checked DIESEL on the registration paperwork...

So how many people have had the wrong fuel type on their registration with their DMV?

I had it on both of Passats in 2005. I noticed it and had the dealer redo the paperwork with the Department of Licensing.

In Washington State, the emissions check is only after 7 years and then only for the Opacity (smoke) Level. Any of the new diesels will pass the opacity test.

Went to the NYS DMV today , had the reg., initial dealer papers and bill of sale. Never thught they would want or need the title too ! At my summer place and didn't have access to it but thought the old title would be void anyway.

I ran into this problem about 10 yrs ago-bought 1/2 ton chevy pickup-was diesel, but had gas on title/registration. I had to take a pencil and outline the VIN , then took to DMV and fixed it.
