Just got my tools last week from Metalnerd and would be more then happy to assist in making a timing belt change. Has any one done it in the NW - Would you like to help the rest of us who have not done it?? I'll volunteer my place and I should have all the tools on hand if someone wants to volunteer their car since i am not due for another 30K. Additionally I'll be doing a brake job.

Great, Heinz. Consider my 2000 Jetta volunteered for a timing belt change. Hope we get some experience on board.

Geez....how far are you guys from Bend Oregon? If Drivbiwire catches this you might blink and miss all the fun

Could I maybe just show up, provide moral support and maybe get my timing checked and few other odds and ends?

I'm still 25K short of TB time, but I suspect there are some other things that need tweaking.

11/9 might work for me.

There's a thread in General Maintenance about swapping out a turbo that let go non-catastrophically out in the middle of nowhere.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">The car has had about 30 gallons of petrodiesel in it since new, so I didn't feel that there was going to be enough "junk" built up in the system to plug the filers.

Looks like TDIjim is willing to donate his 2000 jetta to be a gunie pig- anybody done one before or do we have to due this cold (I know there a plenty of instructions on here but it always helps to have a experienced hand watching over the ship of wanna-be mechanics) which is alright. TDIjim - since it is your car you tell us when you are willing to do this. Like I said before I have all the tools except for a torque wrench which i dont even know if it is needed.

Heinz, I did the timing belt on my 98 Jetta about 1 1/2 years ago. I also have the tools and torque wrench. I understand on the 2000 models or newer you have to jack up or hoist the engine to get the belts off and on, do you have this tool or something else. Depending on when I might be able to help out.

Great to hear from you AL and happy to see you still cruise to keep up. How is your wagon ?? You are among the NW elite by being the only we know of that has a wagon. I have not heard of having to jack up the engine to remove the TB on 2000+ TDI's but that is why I anm looking for someone who has done it before - interessted in joining us for a saturday/sunday adventure?? People have missed you the last couple of go arounds and hope to see you again sometime soon.

If Al can make it Nov. 9th/10th that would be a good weekend, Heinz. Hope it's a good fit for him and everyone interested in the TB GTG. I can come any Sunday, unless we should plan for two days on it. Jim (alias TDIJim, alias Jmcrrr2)

Heinz, have you reviewed the article by Drivbiwire on the A4 timing belt change, you might want to review it so as to be familiar with all thats in volved. My A3 was not nearly as difficult. Jmcrrr2 have you ordered all the parts neccessary to do the job completely, see drivbiwire's recommendations and parts list. Nov. 9 could be a possibility, I believe this will probably the better part of the day to complete for our first attempt. The wife's Passat wagon still running strong. This summer we ran down to Medford, OR to visit family. Round trip was 1182 mile on one tank of fuel
gotta love this car.

Heinz, you mentioned your new tools...would you take a look at the tools Drivbiwire lists in his A4 TB article and let me know which ones you don't have on hand? Al, I can't find a regular parts list in the A4 article other than the tools required and the new belt, the new tensioner, three new non-stretch blue bolts for the injection pump and some blue lock-tite. Am I missing anything? Jim

I'd love to offer up some help but I'll be flying from the 6th through the 13th.

Just an FYI, I'm located over in LaGrande 50SE of Pendelton.

I'm still trying to organize the garage with all the tools as well as trying to fit the trailer and car...

I'll keep my ears open for the next GTG out this way.

Later,
DB

my '01 Golf GL TDI 5-speed just passed the 60k barrier and needs a new timing belt...but I will not be able to attend the surgery on 11/09...

replaced the brakes with brembo drilled and mintex red box 3 weeks ago....pretty easy job once I went to Harbor Freight and got the proper rewind tool for the rears....no noise, no dust, good stopping power....

can anyone recommend a decent shop (south Puget Sound area preferred, by not required)....Larson in Tacoma wants $600 +

I've read that '02 timing belts and tensioners will go 90k and will fit '01 cars....any truth to that claim?

actually 100k, and it's the very same as the "80k" belt, which was installed on engines numbered 500 000 or greater (mid '01 change).

I would like to meet all of you and get my belt changed.............but , I'm thinking about the 11-12 hr drive to get there. Also I can't commit, my boss might have 'jury' duty, so leaving Saturday just would not cut it........

DBW, are you now set up for appoinments, I think you are only about 8 hrs drive?
2200 miles and counting down to 60k

Hank Id be happy to help you out. I have everything at my new place and theres some VERY nice scenery here!

Drop me an email and I can get you my contact info.

My garage is a bit smaller but its heated so I figure its a pretty good trade off.

I should be set into my regular schedule pretty soon, once I am I'll try and get to all the GTG's in the area.

Looks like Drivebywire is more then willing to make it to the Portland area. Since it is crucial to do it right for Jim and his donor car for the TB change it is fair to Drivebywire to accomodate him - translated into lets have it convinient to both Jim and Drivebywire. The 17th of this month is the day for the TB change - anyone willing to volunteer their garage aeround Portland for a TB change and a coouple of Brake jobs ??? Dont be shy - speak up
. Remember that Drivebywire has done many TB changes giving us the chance to do it right with someone who has been around for a looonnngg time and knows what they are doing....

Well it looks like I can make it. I can bring along my tools so that we are set for any possible problems. A timing belt won't take long at all to do. I can bring my engine hoist and with a few willing hands we can knock out the belt in no time.

If you guys need brakes done I'll make sure I bring my brake tools for resetting the rear caliper. Also I can bring along my pressure brake bleader.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">There are a few other portlanders on the forums but apparently they dont frequent the west coast area... murraywest is one that comes to mind.

My car is new enough that I haven't had to get any serious parts yet.. I get what I have to at the stealer and everything else from Discount Import/Chequered Flag auto parts. They are on Mclaughlin Blvd (by mcdonalds) and on Scholls ferry/hall, right near Washington Square. Fuel filters for 33 bucks, it's cheaper than mail order after you figure in the shipping charge.

From what I have read the 80/100k belt will work fine on any A4(post 99.5) engine, but the tensioner is different (very important).
