Two weeks ago when my dealer told me that my Jetta Wagon will arrive the first week of August I was kind of skeptical and thought it would probably be more like September.

Well today the dealer calls up and tells me he's got the paperwork on my car and they are building it in Germany right now just like I wanted. He was all excited and so was I until he told me that it will arrive November first.

Hmmm, much later than I expected. He said special orders take fourteen weeks. All I wanted was a white jetta wagon, black cloth interior with the gls trim, manual 5 speed and esp. What's special about that?

I already had my financing approved and ready to go. Guess I should have bought a 2004 Jetta TDI when they were still available. There's no point in getting anything else so I'm just going to stick it out and wait the few extra months. Gives me time to save up for the ground effects package

1) Stealers lie.
2) Don't believe anything your salesdroid tells you.
3) If they can't give you the VIN, the car doesn't exist.
4) There's no such thing as "ordering" a VW. They build what they build, and customers have no input on that. *IF* your stealer is in good with VW, he can get "dibs" on a car with the options you've specified when it rolls off the ship, if it ever does. That's not to say that the dealer can't tell what they are going to build when, but all he can do is try to reserve one of them for you, but the dealer's allotment is based on how VW rates him.

The much faster way to do things is to call every dealer for 1000 miles and find one. Dealerships will trade with other dealers sometimes, but often they won't for political or monentary reasons(why trade away a car you know you can sell yourself?)

When I "ordered" my car, "this friday" turned into 3 and 1/2 weeks. I heard all manner of excuses, including "they accidentally sent it back to the port"

So I'm in a similar situation. I want a TDI Jetta wagon, Manual, GLS with Leather in Silver. None could be found in 2004 so I've decided to wait for 2005.

The rumor is that 2005 VW models will start to show up in Septemeber. If this rumor is true that means that production has already started and the first few shipments are already on their way to Houston (if not already there).

Not sure if I have a point there but that's the information I have...

I could be mistaken, but I saw two silver '04 Jetta TDI wagons at a dealership near where I work in NJ, although I don't know if their interior was leather. This was two weeks ago when I saw them on the lot.

I think my dealer looked pretty much west of the Mississippi. Much as I'd love to I don't think I could take the time to drive all that way back and transport dealer to dealer would likely be $500-$1000 (cheaper to just wait a little while).

Thanks though...

Which dealer?

When we bought my wife's Jetta Wagon TDI two years ago University VW traded it with a dealer in Maine. We split the transport costs and I think ended up paying about $200 extra.

At the time (May 2002) all of the dealers were saying that the 2003 cars would be coming in Sept/Oct. Then a friend bought a 2003 wagon (almost identical to my wife's) from University VW in July. I don't know if they were mis-informed or feeding me a bit of a line to sell me the car faster.

A friend recently purchased a fully loaded 2004 Jetta Wagon TDI from University but I think it was their last expected 2004 to come in. Another dark blue one (also fully loaded I think) came in at the same time, but I'm sure it has sold by now.

It cost me $500 and 5 days of my life to transport my used Golf from VA to WA last December. I'm glad that I did it, I haven't seen a similar deal on any Golfs since.

Interestingly enough I'm working with University VW. I wish I was in a TDI market at any other time, unfortunately this summer's gas prices have really increased the demand for these guys. Univ. VW did find a car in Texas but dealers aren't looking to give up TDI's these days without something in return. This means not only do they have to transport the car here but a trade car needs to be shipped back...($1000 shipping all the sudden). At this point it's worth it to wait a few months to get what we want and not have to spend the extra cash.

Were it not for the fact that the wagons are probably going to be discontinued in the next 6 months I'd probably wait until gas prices fell a bit. That and we are a bit picky about what we want.

Spring/summer 2002 was also a dry spot in the market and there was pretty high demand. In our case they didn't have to pay for shipping on the car that they traded for, because it hadn't come into port yet and they just had it rerouted.

We were picky about features and somewhat picky about colors (we had an exclusion list, not a specific color that we wanted). I think it is dangerous to be too picky with TDIs, you can be waiting a long time.
