Saw this on Craigslist here in AZ. I texted to see if it was still available and if so would post it here in hopes that it would go to a good home.

He left me a lengthy voicemail about the car. Apparently it’s a Euro spec car but he says it’s titled and registered here in AZ.

Rough transcription from voicemail:

“Hi I'd like to thank you kindly for your text message um this is Taylor with the I guess there's less than 10 of them in the country it's a four motion shot 04 turbo diesel six speed all wheel drive it has 650 mile range on a full tank and gets nearly 40 miles to the gallon at 70 miles an hour and all wheel drive on flat ground it's got under 100,000 original miles but __ columnar's a ________ in commoners a no sink ____ grinding it's fast zippy functional him it's a really cool wagon 8000 cash ___ small transaction I'm CEO it's been garage I practice ___ Apache Junction I've got four properties in the white mountains I guess blast it from Scottsdale work ___ been stored for about six months at a friends place it fired right up some fresh diesel in it and blast it to the white mountains I was in a group of 45 cars I'm surprised we didn't get pulled over we are all doing between 80 and 90 in all wheel drive on the Mountain Road thing which is tracking I got six Porsche it was tracking like my Carrera not a tire squealing nothing just pulling grades and six gear at 85 miles an hour is amazing the way it drives so 8000 cash and there's less than 10 of them in the country I've heard that are the six speed turbo all wheel drive wagon just give me a call thank you for your help and marketing it um that's kind of you and some of the students to whether or not it was an original year old model cause there's a lot of BS and then went on to get in the country which listed as a gas powered vehicle to get it into the US everything but I had a TDI factory GTI specialist look at it and he said that it is indeed a true euro models so there is some dispute about that but in any event him it's a pretty pretty sweet little wagon that moves as a 6 feet short throw stick shift in it only possible of __ head with all wheel drive turbodiesel amazing mileage amazing range very functional vehicle tiny transaction 8000 bucks I don't up a multi million dollar company from the ground up a very small transaction go into one lucky buyer it's in the car the vehicles in Pinetop Arizona in ____ in the garage in Pinetop Arizona a locked in a heated garage OK thank you all right brother…””

If it’s legit, I think I saw one of these 10 cars for sale around 15 years ago. It was listed on Cars.com or autotrader, don’t remember exactly. 6 speed 4 motion TDI Passat wagon in blue.

I ran the VIN in Carfax and nothing came up. Thought that weird and then realized this car wasn’t sold in North America.💡

BTW this would be called a “grey market” car and I don’t believe it’s legal to import something like this however resourceful people know how to do it. It still could be seized by .gov if they figure out what it is.

Appreciate the heads up, don’t want to lead anyone in the wrong direction that could result in something bad like that happening!

What about Canadian vehicles? Considered the same thing? Wonder if that’s what this is even though what you stated may still apply (too early to the import). He did mention it’s in Kilometers.

I believe you could import a Euro car into Canada if it’s > 15 years old. It’s > 25 years old in America and some states make it nearly impossible (like California) because these cars were never certified for federal emissions.

NA vehicles usually have the same emissions so it should be easier to import from Canada or vice versa. I’m no expert on the topic just a casual understanding of how this works.

I had initially texted him and he texted back. (Eight-Zero-Five) three-six-three one-seven-nine-seven

Be careful, I don't know if this is legit, legal to have here in the States, if he's shady, etc. I posted initially because I thought it was cool and maybe someone could get a unique car. Who knows, maybe it's legit. Let us know if you make a move!

There are just too many to list....
There are ways to get stuff here, as I not long ago inspected a Polo sedan here. And it was already licensed and the title was in the system, and it certainly wasn't 25 years old.

If it's a vehicle that has a counterpart in the USA and the same emissions standards, there's some loopholes you can go through to get them registered legally in the USA. Also depends on the state.
I saw that car. Looks nice!

i talked to this guy on the phone and he's a total fruit. although this is (in the US) a unicorn TDI and might be "worth" the $8k he was asking, he knew nothing about the service history or the car itself--other than it was "rare". didn't know if the TB had been done, didn't know what a BSM or haldex was. i wasn't interested in another money pit and the guy really rubbed me the wrong way, not in a scammer kind of sense, but it was a hard pass for me. and because he was such a tool--i could go on about the conversation i attempted to have with him--i didn't post it here either.

That guy is local to me. I was gonna check it out and knew it was a grey market car that he is trying to unload. He talks too much about himself.... something about how he is "self made", "all the million $ properties and business he owns", "this $8k transaction is a small transaction, his secretary is handling" etc etc.

Although I knew it was grey market, he wasn't forthcoming about how he got the car. I asked for the vin and he was skirting.

But looks like someone bought it, i don't see the listing anymore.

in the Ebay ad he states someone has made this... not imported it, per se...

good luck all... caveat emptor

"This B5 wagon started out as a GLX gas model and was lovingly converted using a 1.9ltr BEW TDI motor from an 04 Jetta that had 100K on it & 6 spd manual transmission that was imported from Europe. There are no warning or check engine lights lit up on the instrument cluster and almost all original electronic functions work as they should although cruise control is not functioning as it has not been wired yet from the lower clutch switch (I’ll get this figured out & taken care of before the sale goes through!) The all wheel drive works flawlessly and the 1.9ltr motor paired with 6 spd trans provides plenty of power & torque in all gears & RPMs.The instrument cluster is was from a Euro Passat that had slightly more kilometers on it then the donor motor and so therefore reads in kilometers..."
