No , you can keep your TDI and "when "a fix is approved , you can have it fixed by VW, with what ever that entails since no one knows what the fix will do to your car, after it is fixed VW will write you a check for your troubles, you have to have the car fixed,I have no idea what happens if there is no fix. I think the only way you can keep your car and not go the fixed route is you give up your right to any money from VW that is part of the settlement. The settlement is broken into two parts , turn in your car and you get a payment that is made up from two piles of cash, trade in value on your car and lets call it pain and suffering , if you trade in your car you get a payment from both piles of money, if you do the fix , after it is fixed you get a payment from the pain and suffering pile but you keep your car with the fixed that VW has not said what it will do to you car. Hope that helps

I dont understand people pocketing money and also not turning in the car? I don't follow? Unless I'm misunderstanding.

Can you keep the car, get fronted money for a fix, and not do the fix?

If you wait for a fix and no acceptable fix is available, you will have the option to turn your car in and be paid. If you decide that you will not turn it in, you will be paid nothing. Volkswagen, if the total number of cars turned in or fixed falls short of 85% of the affected cars, will have to pay a fine for each car it fall short.

I think your ability to then refuse to sell back, and to continue to drive an unfixed car legally at this point is unclear, and will ultimately vary on a state by state basis.

Yes, breathable air is a *****, isn't it?
People seem to breathing just fine in the other 49 states. Thank you for your concern.

I love my JSW, but apparently VW loves it even more. So much they're giving me $23k for a 5 year old car with 60k miles. Unless Elvis materializes in my driveway and offers to drive it for Uber, it will never be worth this much money. It was an easy decision for me and others that I know. My wife, however, is keeping hers (and pocketing the $6200).

Win/win.
Easy decision for me !!

My numbers are almost the same as yours. About $22k for the 95k miles it will have by the Summer of 2018.

Absolutely. $5100 minimum or half of that if you bought the car after 18 Sep 15. One catch. A fix has to get approved. So it's not totally solid yet.
And you will not get the check until the fix is applied.

And for a 2015 - it's a 2 part fix - the first will get you about 2/3 of the cash, and the final 1/3 is paid when the last part is complete.

If you have a 2015 - I wouldn't worry too much about VW not coming up with a fix - except for the "test mode" , it's very close to what it was supposed to pass if it doesn't actually pass now.

I guess we will see if they can fix it...If not turning it in will be a good option....

ECU destruction?

I don't want to give mine up either. I'd LOVE to take the restitution and walk away...But what if the replacement ECU can't be tuned unless you replace the ECU?

And all of my simple tune. delete, modify plans get more expensive and suffer delays while aftermarket figures it out.

And added hardware may need removing, existing hardware removed and retained?

If the restitution plan (with fix) becomes a hardware nightmare, is it worth it?

These are unanswered questions.

The alternative is to refuse the restitution and walk away. In some States, you will not be able to do it (Actually, I think my State won't chase me down). But then I am turning down a buyback EQUAL to the amount I paid for the vehicle two years ago.

TOUGH decisions.

Me neither says the AOL'er

I am also not doing the buy back. I will take the $, get the fix, and then get it "unfixed". Even though it has a DSG I am really enjoying the car. I bought it to drive it, not to turn it in. Bought it KNOWING of the scandal, don't care. (I also have a 2004 PD TDI, bought the 2012 as a spare).

Myself, I'll likely get the fix, and see how it behaves . . . there may well be zero reason not to just keep it in place . . . we just plain don't know what we don't know yet!

Agree on that last. (But also agree with you buyback amount equalling original new car price - in my case over 3 1/2 years back.........................

Been on the fence with turning my 2012 in. Have 155k on it now and have not touched a thing outside of general maintenance so far. My buyback is roughly 17k and still owe 5k on it. Not much I'm going to replace it with for 12k and after inquiring about a manual GSW S 4motion, it sounds like dealers are only willing to sell at full MSRP, which is a definite deal breaker.

Have brakes (original) and clutch coming in the next year or so, but I'm not willing to go through the dealer transactional friction eating up whatever little buyback I would be receiving.

Till death do us our part it looks like. I'll just replace what needs to be replaced and drive happy. The upfront of the repairs will hopefully be under 4k and I'll be shooting to ride out the DPF and EGR as long as possible.

I plan on holding into my 14 Golf. I've already "fixed" exhaust with a Rawtek setup and I'm running a CP3 fuel pump so I'm good to go. I may decide just to not to do anything, pass on the money, and keep on motoring. It all depends on what the state of Maryland is going to do to owners who keep the cars. If they require the fix (if one is ever approved) I'll reconsider what I want to do - but as it stands I'm looking forward to many more years with the car.

160K with relatively minor issues. Still delivers 45-46 mpg and drives like it's new.
So I am keeping it.

I love this car and won't be able to get anything like it as a replacement so I'm thinking of keeping it, as well (if so I will likely put a CP3 HPFP in it). Still not certain, however. The GTI is tempting me (even more fun to drive than my TDI but the fuel economy and premium gas are minuses), and the new Golf TSI was a pleasant surprise when I test drove one the other day -- good power, handling, and solid build. I really don't want a car payment at this point.

If a fix doesn't get approved, I am somewhat split between the trade-in and the "keep as is."

Have 107K miles on her. Always was planning on keeping it until the wheels fell off.
Should get around $17K buy-back, but the preferred replacement is the Golf Alltrack, fully-loaded with manual, which should be around $35K. But it'll be a gasser...
Paid off the Jetta this spring, and really not wanting another payment.
Tough choice to me, personally.

already bought my replacement cars.. Volvo V60 for the wife, who by the way just returned from a 400 mile trip and averaged 38 mpg, and a gasser 2010 Passat for myself. I am getting 34mpg.

I like what the other guy was thinking, I'm going to try to get 300k on a sub $20,000 car. Fuel is cheap. What could go wrong? At 30,000 odo the car seems to be slowly breaking in. My mileage is slowly increasing.

Not sure when the fix will happen, but I may wait a while on the fix too. If or when it happens. Not sure how that will affect the car in the long run.
Though, you can bet I'll be reading through these forums to see what is inside this fix that they propose.

Hoping to make my decision at around the 2018 deadline, although I read in another thread that VOA will be decreasing the buy back value based on added mileage for those that want the buy back after the fix has been proposed.

So many factors.

I may just jump on a new Prius or Tacoma. Those cars are worlds apart from each other. That's how split I am on this decision.

That just doesn't make sense. How can you evaluate whether you want the fix or not until after you know its impact? Seems from everything I've read, that while one CAN take the buyout basically now, there's no need to make a decision on buyout/fix for some two years.

VW will be adjusting the value of all buybacks for mileage. If you drive less than 12,500 miles/year, your value will (slowly) go up. If you drive more, your value will go down, though more slowly than in just about any other car.

It pays to wait.

...provided you don't wreck your car and have the insurance pay you what the car is worth.

I'm assuming that this will be an ECU flash issue, but last thing I want to know about the fix is if they're adding new components or if the DEF runs hotter causing faster wear. I know this is just speculation and there is no knowing what the fix will be like, it's just a matter of who wants to be the first to volunteer their car for a remedy that VW never really wanted in the original design?

Here is a nice explanation.

my 2012 Golf only has little over 27k. I got it for a very good price with extremely low mileage after Sept 15. I knew about the scandal when I got it, but adding the $1000 plus the possible half on the 5100 the car may look a good keeper. However, I wouldn t mind turning it in and apply all the sum to ward my condo mortgage. Would like to know if the buyback is a taxable or not....If taxable I will keep the car (with or without modifications), but I am not in a rush to do anything right now.
