I see everyone (appears) are planning on doing the buy back for their TDI? I understand the states that require emissions testing, I hated living in California for that and many other reasons.
Other than that, are their any real good reasons to do the Buy Back? In East TN they don't require emissions testing so my plan is to take the money and run...Actually, it'll get to the Malone Stage 2 tune and PDF delete that I've wanted to do for a year now. :D

Now TDI-free, but there now is a 15 MB E250 BT in the driveway
My wife wants to buy a real car, and VW, in her opinion, does not qualify. Is that a good enough reason?

I love my JSW, but apparently VW loves it even more. So much they're giving me $23k for a 5 year old car with 60k miles. Unless Elvis materializes in my driveway and offers to drive it for Uber, it will never be worth this much money. It was an easy decision for me and others that I know. My wife, however, is keeping hers (and pocketing the $6200).

Win/win.

I wasn't going to do the buyback, but after oil change I'm being told that I need around 1.5k in parts/labor for various issues. I'm not putting anymore money into a 2015 car that's had way more issues than it should. Done with VW. It also helps that my daily commute may change from 80 miles to 8 miles. No real need for a TDI if that happens.

Joe,

There are many here who are not doing a buy back and a few more like myself who are doing the buy back but have already or will after buy back purchase another new or newer VW or Audi TDI.

My TDI was purchased used and has 114k miles on the odometer now. It's next in line for a timing belt replacement and DSG service and many here state that the '09s suffer from failed DPFs at early miles which is an expensive repair. For those reasons and the overly generous buy back offer mine will be a buy back but I still love VWAG cars and TDIs.

I share your views about living in KA although I love to visit San Diego. My wife and I will be there again this year for Christmas.

I obtained 51mpg driving 3 hours through the inland empire the other day, without trying. I'm keeping my TDI.
I own a gen1 2013 Golf TDI, the last of the made-in-Germany TDI's.

my 2011 tdi jetta nav. sunroof.. manual 6 speed etc.. has been flawless for 40,000 miles so far.. not to mention I own a shop and can do any repairs here if something does go wrong..not to mention the 1 year 120000 mile warranty on the hpfp.. if I take the 5900 with the update.. will go with a tune etc...eventually and be happy even more with the car!...just drove to Miami and back (I'm in Athens ga. around 1200 miles round trip) got 46 mpg..happy .. and more happy..love the pep and handling.. keeping the car! at least for now...no reason to give it up at this point

WOW!! Now that's a deal!!

VW will only give my $14K for buy back which is pay off on my 2012 (bought new in 2015) and only has 41K miles. I'll take the $5800 and do a Malone Stage 2 tune with DPF delete...And pay it off eventually..

Yes Sir...Can't say I forgot...17 miles in an hour and half on the 405, is something that is NEVER forgotten...Did it for 5 1/2 years....<YUCK>
12 years for me on the 101 and 405 for 40 miles each way (daily). Houston is a piece of cake in comparison. But the saying..."the weather is here...".

Joe, you're in the East now. It's 'I-405' or just '405'. Forget the 'the 405'. Else you will give yourself away.

Yeah that is interesting. I had not thought much about it but growing up in New England we said "495" or "Rt 3" or "Rt 128" or "95" or "290" etc. I have family in Arizona, and they always say "the 202" or "the 60" or "the 101." One of those subtle differences in speech that can give you away.

You have two years to let them buy it back. I think it makes sense to wait the 2 years and then get your money. My buy back is 27,700 for a 2013. If I wait two years and get the buy back they will be giving me 27,700 for a car that is 6 years old. I can get a new car for that. So I could either keep 6 year old car or get a new one. The new one comes with a 3 year warranty.

...unless you drive over 12,500 miles/year, as many of us do, in which case the buyback amount will be less. Still will be much less than the depreciation we'd see on any other car, though.

There are plenty of good reasons to delay selling back the car, though they may not apply to everyone.

Most people are looking at the buyback as an offer they can't refuse. However, if you consider the fix and (for my TDI), the roughly $6000 compensation, that puts my purchase price at around $20,000 for the car. I don't think you can find a comparable car for $20K.
My plan is to take the fix and bank the compensation money for any future repairs. Hoping to get 500,000 miles out of the $20K car.

Mine is going back I think ( 95%) bought new my 11 TDI wagon has 130,000 miles on it, I have put in $3500 bucks worth of repairs using an indie, not counting Maintenance nor the new HPFP that VW paid for. At 125,000 miles my DPF cracked VW wanted around $2600 for this " maintenance part" Indie said around $1600 to replace DPF, I need a TB/WP at where I am now. say another $ 1300 for that, so if I did the DPF repair I would have invested over $5,000 in repairs to a 5 year old car I bought new, that is too much for me, I like the car a lot but time to get out, I am not make a killing on my car, I am taking about a $3500 mileage hit but it is what it is, Battery just died today, maybe the car is pissed I am returning it.

and here I'm driving a 2000 NB with 349,000 + miles as my daily driver...

car bought used for $10,000, replaced transmission with 5 speed manual at 252,000 miles ( about $3000 for that) , another $1000 + $800 for new fuel pump and new, larger fuel injector nozzles - plus multiple timing belt jobs - I probably have as much in maintenance and parts as I do in the car itself... and NO intentions on selling / junking the car until at least 500,000 miles...

110k on my 13 JSW. Payoff and compensation adds up to 21k for me. I only paid 25k for it new... So basically I paid 4k plus basic maintenance to drive a car 110k miles at 45 mpg average. Not to mention it is going to need a TB and other expensive bits at 120k... No brainer for me.

I'm waiting. Love my TDI and can't think of another car where I get close to 50mpg on trips and is this much fun to drive.

An entirely different long term ownership proposition. Much less complicated mechanically.

I intend to keep the 2015 Golf that long too.

We still have the first car we bought as a couple - a 1988 Acura Integra with 278,000 miles. Still runs good (burns some oil, and AC doesn't work anymore - but it makes a fine backup car when necessary) .

I dropped a 1990 Honda Civic SW at 290,000 miles when it had a coolant leak and the engine locked from overheating.

So, I have a history of keeping cars "until the wheels fall off" .

Pretty much the way I own them, but I am concerned about a one year engine and emissions system long term. I have a 2015.

Best of luck to you though, hope very much it works out well for you.

I dont understand people pocketing money and also not turning in the car? I don't follow? Unless I'm misunderstanding.

Can you keep the car, get fronted money for a fix, and not do the fix?
