Now that I have a Scan Gauge and can read coolant temp what should "normal" operating temp be? In the summer I have seen it go as high as 198 deg F. Does this engine have a thermostat and if so that is it's "operating temp"?

Your MFI should have a temp gauge that shows Oil Temp (my 2015 does, I'm not sure if that upgrade was in the 2014). I see operating temp around 98 deg C, so roughly 198 F.

In my 2013, I had it linked up to the Torque app on my android phone and it would hover around 200 deg F - had it reading up to 208 in summer going uphill under heavy load.

Hope that helps your reference!

Using Torque, 2012 w/2306 update  is usually 201 +- 1 degrees .
2014 w/out 2306 is consistently 190 degrees.

I think 190 degrees is closer to normal operating temps. I've attributed the higher temps in the 2012 directly to the 2306 update, but I'm not 100% sure if that's the case.

mine sits at about 180 when it actually gets there. This winter it has been hard to get it up there. I Have the front stuffed with pipe insulation too. I guess that is what I get for cutting out my EGR.

I'm lurking around the Sedan forum, I have 2010 CJAA JSW TDI...
However my scan gauge is locked on 190.... in summer. In winter
I often can't make 190... I see 188.

When it Regens, I will see a few degrees 191 or a few degree more.
I don't recall ever seeing more than 193. I have never seen 198.

Higher temps could be emission related, primarily more EGR ops.
