Hi,

I want to know if someone on the forum had good results with the Chevron Delo 400 LE Synthetic 5W-40 and Mobil Delvac 1 ESP 0W-40 on pd (bew) engine for about 8-16k km (5-10k miles) oci.

I live in the north coast were temp reach -40° sometimes and far from the stealer but close to a truck garage who have these oils on shelf.

If the answer is yes, I'll do an UOA from Blackstone or if there is cheaper UOA in Canada (Quebec) it could be great to know.

Best regards,

Martin

Non 505 oil will accelerate the wear on an already weak cam, don't risk it.

Quite a few people are now using non 505.01 oils in there PD's with good results, Mobil Delvac and Shell Rotella being the most common.
For reference this is what the VW recomended oil did to my followers:-

FWIW all oils are non-505.1 as there are no 505.1 oils. 505.01 is what you need.

Among the 505.01 rated oils available, the xW-40 505.01 oils have shown to provide better protection than xW-30 505.01 oils. Make sure that whatever 505.01 spec oil used is a 5W-40 oil.

Good luck and Welcome to TDIclub. :cool:

This is an old myth. Some make it forever on 505 oils and some don't see 100K before cam wear needs addressing.

Many have been using Mobil TDT or Mobil Delvac and Rotella T6(what I use) with no harm done at all. Just be sure it's a 5w-40 synthetic for diesels

If the Delo 400 5w40 is a Synthetic Diesel rated oil, it will probably be OK, but as you said - not as much usage as the more popular Rotella T6 or Mobil 1 TDT .

Delo 400 5w40 oil is a very good oil. I personally wouldn't use any non 505.01 spec oil in a PD engine, but if you are going to use one the Chevron oil is every bit as good as Rotella T6

Bought a 5l of Shell Rotella T6 on sale at canadian tire for 40$CAD... Will try Delo 400 next time, I think I have it for 32-36CAD$.

Also, I can't find Mobil 1 in 5W-40 only found Mobil 1 Delvac esp 0W-40 for 47$CAD.

By the way, I've found some interesting numbers on 540ratblog :

https://540ratblog.wordpress.com/2013/06/20/motor-oil-wear-test-ranking/

phos = 1168 ppm
moly = 2 ppm

125. 5W40 CHEVRON DELO 400LE Diesel Oil synthetic, API CJ-4, CI-4 Plus, CI-4, SL, SM = 69,631 psi
zinc = TBD
phos = TBD
moly = TBD

134. 5W40 SHELL ROTELLA T6 Diesel Oil, synthetic, API CJ-4, CI-4 Plus, CI-4, CH-4, SM, SL = 67,804 psi
zinc = TBD
phos = TBD

We never did find out what the 01 specification was. All 5W40 oils are synthetic and most likely will work on the PD engine.

134. 5W40 Liqui Moly Leichtlauf High Tech Oil, synthetic = 69,580 psi
zinc = TBD
phos = TBD
moly = TBD
This oil is made in Germany and is available in the U. S. It comes in 1 Liter bottles which is slightly more than a quart.

( Rank number change each time he add an oil test but look at the psi numbers... It's almost the same as chevron delo 400. )

505.01 exists to provide more protection of the PD camshaft (but not enough it seems - remember there are conventional oils that meet the older 505.00 standard which has existed since at least the early 90s) and to reduce emissions / catalyst poisoning.

I have heard that the 505.01 is only used for emissions purposes.. Has nothing whatsoever to do with wear.

I used Mobil1 TDT 5w-40 with no problems or wear for over 50K miles..

Yes it will be blackstone. I already have a kit for uoa.

I was thinking to do my oci at 8k because I do a lot of city driving and it is really cold here in 50th parallel.

Use a good synthetic 5w-40 for diesels and you'll be fine at 10K

If in doubt, take your oil analysis between 7k and 8k and that should tell you what you need to know

How many miles before oil changes? 5-8-10k?
Using - Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5w40

NEVER change it less than 10,000 miles or 2 years... EVER.

Lowest wear occurs with 10-15K, 20-25K if you support the changes with oil analysis.

All my high mileage customers (Cams with more than 300K on them) are running 15-20K intervals or 2 years.

I change at 16-20k km's so 10k - 12k miles on Rotella T6 5w40 I've had a few UOA done and they're always good at that point I can probably go further.

I do run a zinc additive though.

You are correct

The valve train wear test that VW uses for 505.01 is the same as the 505.00

Whoa!
My daughter recently got a 2005 BEW. Are you saying if she puts 40,000 miles in 18 months she should still wait for 2 years, pending OA results?
Thanks

3 year old thread bump, eh?

Notice the "or" in that last sentence. As good as DBW's advice is, it's definitely not the textbook (owner's manual) version. Your daughter should care for her car in the manner that the manual prescribes.

It's a crapshoot anyhow, regardless of the oil used and change interval; some PDs eat their cams, others don't. Just the nature of the beast.

Thanks for the quick response. I did notice the "OR" in his recommendation. The confusion lied in what looked like a negative suggestion, ie don't change under either circumstance (less than 10-15K miles or 2 years).

My mistake. It's a whichever comes first suggestion, which makes sense. :eek:

2015 Golf Sportwagen 6 speed manual. B5 died at 302k miles.
I have some leftover 505.01 sitting around. No longer have my B5. If this oil provides "extra" protection at the camlobe, where pressures are apparently astronomical, does it mean it is going to be fine in a gasoline engine, and arguably provide better protection than a non 505.01 oil? Just do not want to throw away/not use the case I have.

I have been running Mobil TDT 5w-40 for 11 Years and 170K miles on my BRM (PD). At 200k I checked my cam and it looked like new, I have a lot of family members with the same engine and new cams because the 505.01.
I switch long ago because I saw the great oil analyst when compared to 505.01. I have always made sure it had the CJ-4 spec, which I also believe Rotella T6 also has.

I switched under warranty because 505.01 would last until my 60k warranty was up, but I planned on having the car a lot longer than VW would warranty it.

Flame-suit on :eek:

Note that 505.01 superseded the 505.00 when it first came out, and there are still many synthetic oils out there that meet the 505.00 spec. The 505.00 stuff was also 502.00 compliant which was intended for gassers, so you could run it in just about most modern gas cars (including the 1.8T and 2.0T that VW made).

Therefore, IMO, 505.01 oil is more than good enough for any modern gasser, as long as the 5w40 viscosity is appropriate for your climate.
