Also, passenger seat on the Cruze is non reclining.
Citation needed on that one - apparently the lever is hard to find based on what I'm finding (apparently people confuse it with the seat height adjuster), but it's there.

Looking at Chevy website; three models of Cruze available with manual. None of them have diesel engines.
That is because Chevrolet has not released it yet.

With smaller production runs, I think car makers will only do one or two a year. This si why Honda has not released a Civic SE with the new body style yet, and the special performance package BRZ Subarus are going to be one small run in January.

GM is betting big on being able to pull from the VW diesel lovers.

It would be hard to imagine any car other than say a Mitsubishi mirage coming with non reclining seats. If I recall correctly, Chevy was putting reclining seats in even the 1980's Cavaliers.

40K service on transmission runs $200+ at independent shop. (You would have to do 15 servicings to break even.) Autos are faster than manuals in acceleration - just look at auto mags and their results. Mileage is reduced. Assume 2mpg. How long does it take to break even on mileage? Reliability is unknown.
Not to mention the need to program the ecu for the change and the reduced resale of the vehicle.

Also, in many states you now have a vehicle that is not certified to be in smog compliance, which could become an issue in the future. Even in states that do not E check, if E check becomes more wide spread...

Even the base Mirage has a reclining passenger seat, it appears. (No height adjustment, but then, even my Prius doesn't have that on the passenger side.)

Where I'd go looking for something that doesn't recline is a base model full-size pickup, with a regular cab... but I'd think even those recline.

Cruze dealer said no diesels in 2017.
They're wrong:

DigitalTrends said:
Rumors have been circulating for a while that the 2017 Cruze sedan would get a diesel powertrain, and Chevy has finally confirmed the buzz. Unexpectedly, the new hatchback will also receive a diesel motor, and both body styles will get six-speed manual and all-new nine-speed automatic transmission options.
