Hey Team,
Have a 2005 BEW with a weird issue. Was driving down the road and it quit. Troubleshooting revealed a dead lift pump which I replaced. It's working fine. I pulled the line ahead of the injection pump and ran fuel through, reconnected it, but no start. When cranking, it sounds like it's "trying"...like maybe 1 or 2 are hitting intermittently. Suggestions / thoughts? No codes stored.

How did the old pump look when you pulled it out? Can you hear it activate when you turn the ignition key to on before you start the engine? Did you replace the filter with the pump? Have you checked the wiring harness and relay for the injectors?

There's a decent chance that the in tank pump died some time ago and more recently now the (overworked) tandem pump has worn out

@Kramer : old one was dead. Looked fine, but old. No workey. New one works fine.
@braddies : had this experience with my Dodge pickups. common in the TDis?

Without the positive pressure from the in tank pump, the tandem pump works extra hard to pull fuel up from the tank, through the sending unit and up under the hood, without the lift pump the tandem pump is working extra duty and commonly fails.
Someone who knows the PD motors better might know of a confirmation test
