No power steering - 2006 VW Jetta // 1.9L TDI

2006 VW Jetta 1.9L TDI (BRM) - 6 speed automatic DSG // ~290,000 mi

Just had the red "steering assist" light illuminate while parked at idle after 10 minutes of driving. Shut it off, went into the store, came back out, and light was still present with no power steering.

Got home, checked fuse #6 (5 amp) from the interior fuse box... nothing out of the ordinary. Pulled the codes (shown below) & cleared them... issue is still present. Help from anybody that has ran into this issue would be greatly appreciated before I start dumping a couple hundred $ into uneccesary parts.

(Also, the EGR code is a new one... prevous owner did an EGR delete ~100K miles ago)

Follow up:

Cleared the codes the other day and drove it around. Went down the road just fine, until the car tried to dart me into oncoming traffic while making a left turn. The red steering wheel light came on the dash again, followed by three beeps.

Went out to tinker with it a few days later, but the battery was completely dead. Stuck it on the trickle charger until fully charged. Also, my horn doesn’t work?

So far, I’ve:

1.) Checked & cleaned ground cables. They were tight and relatively clean before this.

2.) Double checked all fuses, including SA2 fuse in box A and cleaned the wire going to it. All appeared to be in working order… also checked continuity just to be sure.

3.) Cleaned out and applied dielectric grease to the plug running to the steering rack.

4.) Cleared all codes

All this to say, no fix…
Can anyone shed some light on this issue? …Pretty please?

You’ll need to use VCDS or a scanner to see what codes it’s throwing for the light. Could be steering angle sensor, but that’s just a guess.

Funny you say that... The first two times I scanned with the VCDS, it only showed the two codes I posted above, relating to the Control Module and Steering Motor Current.

Just went out to rescan, and it shows "00778 - Steering Angle Sensor (G85)", but the "00569 - Steering Motor Current" code is gone...

Cleared the codes and no nothing popped up. Drove it around a quarter mile, and it still says "No fault code found." With that said, I still don't have power steering. I'm at a bit of a loss here...

Read over the thread again and noticed that too. Shortly after, I did exactly what the OP explained at the end of the thread, cleared the codes, and everything appeared to have been working perfectly.

The next morning, I drove it ~20 miles to work with no issues. As soon as I fired it up to head home, I got the red steering light and three chimes again... no power steering. So I drove it home that way, no big deal... but wait, it gets better!

While sitting at a red light (almost home), the PRNDS indicator began flashing. I put the car in neutral, then drive, then sport mode, and the car wouldn't budge. Put it in park, shut the car off, waited a minute, started it up again, and every light on the panel illuminated like a christmas tree!! Also, the tachometer was not working, the PRNDS indicator had gone missing, and the car was stuck in park. So much fun.

So after sitting at the intersection for ~5 minutes, I gave it one last shot and fired it up. It went into drive and I was able to make it the last half mile home with all of the lights still on the panel. Plugged in the VCDS and pulled 60 codes shortly after:

After doing a bit of research, the codes seem to be predominantly associated with the CAN Gateway. I'm unfamiliar with this system, as I've never had any electrical issues on this car.

To eliminate a few possibilities, I got the battery and alternator tested, both of which supposedly tested fine. I’ll be doing a parasitic draw test shortly with the driver's door and hood open for a few hours before-hand. Any feedback/input in case I'm doing this wrong? Any other possibilities?

Definitely indicitive of powertrain CAN going down. Any of the modules on the bus can kill the network. Ideally, an oscilloscope is used to monitor the CAN signal while it's faulting, and you unplug the modules one at a time until it goes normal. A multimeter *may* be able to be used by monitoring voltage but it really doesn't give a full picture.

A fault steering rack could pull the network down. So could water ingress into any module or electrical connector on the network. Are there any CAN connectors/ headers shown on the diagram?

For your parasitic draw test, latch the hood latches, latch the drivers door latch, and lock the car, let it go to sleep for 20 minutes.

Basically I'll gain access to anywhere I may need to test, leave those doors open and latch them, then put the car to sleep. If you have power seats, make sure they're moved to wherever you need to give yourself the most space.

Often the module that is causing the draw (if it is indeed a module) will be causing other issues, so I would start by checking the steering rack.

Beware that if a bus is kept awake, other, non faulty modules on the bus may be drawing a current as well.

Use voltage drop across the fuses to determine draw. An infrared camera can be helpful, if you have access to one.
