avoiding low viscosity

i had the recommended oil from the dealer for the first 60k miles with regular changes. it gave me a real bad sludge issue. lubrication was bad/noisy, even with a warm engine. independent vw specialist used a cleanser that cleared the issue. he put in some mobil 1 full synthetic. since it wasn't matching the vw tdi spec, i got nervous and removed it after about 3000 miles...but the engine was 100% quiet/happy.

then i put in a "european formula" oil from oreillys. it explicitly met vw spec and cost substantially less than the dealer. but the only viscosity was 0-40. the temperature in the winter never got lower than 45 F. the engine was noisy when cold, and after a few hundred miles, even made a little noise when warm. i took it for the dealer and requested a full lube system flush. he said ok, but then said no way when he saw it was a tdi. no service avail for that in calif.

so i drained the oil, put in mobil 1, with some auto-rx and it was quiet again, even when cold. i got the highest "cold" viscosity, which was 15-40. i had oreillys cleaner for a couple hundred miles and it quieted it down but only a little. i think auto-rx has quieted the engine when warm.

for cleanser, i'll do another oil change in 1500 miles and drop, clean the oil pan. i like mobil and if they make something that is tdi compliant, i'll look for that.

i purposely mentioned my winter ambient temp here because i realize people in colder climates need to make a compromise. also, this is MY experience and realize others may not feel it's applicable to them. this was scary and i hope others can avoid it.

Mobil 1 TDT 5w40

__. Yeah, see my post above -- saw it in Kinston NC for the first time in 2-3 years; this weekend also saw it at "SuperCenter" in Wallace NC. Apparently it's back on the "suggested buy" list from headquarters.
I saw Mobil 1 tdt in gallon or was that 5 quart jugs at the Wal Mart in Greenville , North Carolina Friday and also shell t6. The Mobil tdt it is the first time i seen it in years at a wal mart. :)

I just saw M1 TDT 5-40 at OSH (Orchard Supply Hardware in California) for $35/gallon. No idea if that's a competitive price, but I was surprised to see it there.

That's expensive for TDT, more along the lines of the D1 ESP price. TDT is normally $25/gallon.

Just picked up some with the Autozone coupon. Five quarts at $32 and you get a filter of your choice...

IN San Leandro Walmart, sometimes there are sales of Mobil 1 TDT for 22 dollars per gallon .... but only if you can find it. I bought some last year, but last week, there was none....

you do drive a diesel... the engine is noisy... Vw recommends the oil with the 5-40 rating if im not mistaken. where 15-40 is not reccomended to even be used as a fuel additive. if your worried about Mobil 1's 5-40 quality.. which i have no worry about running it in any of my diesels, 7.3 psd for 8K miles (when i was running to ohio and back, 12-15hr continuous driving) with good UOA's, my jetta for 9K. good UOA.)

heres a good link to a list of Approved oils.
